Over the past two decades, we have witnessed an exponential increase of data production in the world. So-called big data generally come from transactional systems, and even more so from the Internet of Things and social media. They are mainly characterized by volume, velocity, variety and veracity issues. Big data-related issues strongly challenge traditional data management and analysis systems. The concept of data lake was introduced to address them. A data lake is a large, raw data repository that stores and manages all company data bearing any format. However, the data lake concept remains ambiguous or fuzzy for many researchers and practitioners, who often confuse it with the Hadoop technology. Thus, we provide in this paper a comprehensive state of the art of the different approaches to data lake design. We particularly focus on data lake architectures and metadata management, which are key issues in successful data lakes. We also discuss the pros and cons of data lakes and their design alternatives.

The Journal of Intelligent Information Systems aims to promote and showcase research and development results focused on the integration of artificial intelligence and database technologies to create the next generation of information systems—intelligent information systems. These new information systems embody knowledge, enabling them to exhibit intelligent behavior, collaborate with users and other systems to solve problems, discover, access, retrieve, and manipulate various multimedia data and knowledge, and reason under uncertainty. Knowledge-driven reasoning processes are increasingly used for discovering knowledge from large datasets, providing collaborative support for users in complex query formulation and refinement, accessing, retrieving, storing, and managing vast amounts of multimedia data and knowledge, integrating information from multiple heterogeneous data and knowledge sources, and reasoning under uncertain conditions. Multimedia and hypermedia information systems now operate globally via the internet, necessitating new tools and techniques to manage these dynamic and evolving information spaces. The Journal of Intelligent Information Systems provides a forum for scholars, researchers, and practitioners to publish high-quality, original, and cutting-edge papers that describe the theoretical aspects, system architecture, analytical and design tools and techniques, and implementation experiences of intelligent information systems. The types of papers published in JIIS include research papers, invited papers, conference and workshop announcements and reports, survey and tutorial articles, and book reviews. Short papers describing open problems or their solutions are also welcome.
