As one of the most popular advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), Fenton/Fenton-like processes are of great importance in degrading recalcitrant contaminants with high efficiency, which are mainly due to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) with excellent oxidation capacity. These ROSs include hydroxyl radical, singlet oxygen, superoxide radical, hydroperoxyl radical, and high-valent iron, which are responsible for the decomposition of pollutants. This paper reviews all the methods of detecting and measuring ROSs generated in Fenton/ Fenton-like processes, including probing methods, spectroscopic methods, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), quenching methods, etc. The detection mechanisms, conditions, and advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed. Probing methods, quenching methods, and EPR are commonly used for the detection and measurement of both hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen. However, in many cases, the selectivity of the probing agents for the desired radicals cannot be guaranteed. For quenching methods, the selectivity of the quenchers is also hard to be ensured. In the case of EPR, its ability to quantify ROSs remains to be discussed. Quenching methods, spectroscopic methods, and EPR play a critical role in verifying the existence of superoxide/ hydroperoxyl radicals in Fenton/Fenton-like systems. The main techniques to detect high valent iron include methyl phenyl sulfoxide (PMSO) probing method, quenching methods, spectroscopic methods (Raman spectrometry and Mössbauer spectrometry), among which PMSO method and Mössbauer spectrometry are widely used due to their excellent selectivity and sensitivity. The review sheds light on the deep aspects of the detection and measurement methods of ROSs generated in Fenton/Fenton-like processes, which will help researchers in this area to understand and use these methods.
