Endocrine manipulation by treatment with a gonadotropin releasing hormone agonist will prevent neurovisceral attacks of acute intermittent porphyria due to cyclical changes in endogenous hormones and is a safe alternative to exogenous steroids, which may induce attacks of this disease.
