Prior laboratory-based studies have identified significant analgesic effects of acute alcohol. Despite providing excellent experimental control, these studies are limited regarding the range of alcohol exposure that can be practically and ethically achieved. This study capitalized on the heterogeneity in breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) resulting from naturalistic alcohol use at a public event to improve understanding of alcohol analgesia. We hypothesized that BrAC would be significantly and positively associated with pain threshold.

Addictive Behaviors is an international peer-reviewed journal that has published high-quality human research on addictive behaviors and disorders since 1975. The journal accepts long articles and brief communications on substance-related addictions, such as alcohol, drug, and nicotine abuse, as well as behavioral addictions related to gambling and technology. We primarily publish behavioral and psychosocial research, but our articles cover various fields, including psychology, sociology, psychiatry, epidemiology, social policy, medicine, pharmacology, and neuroscience. While the theoretical directions are diverse, the journal mainly focuses on empirical research. A sound experimental design combined with effective and reliable assessment and evaluation procedures is a prerequisite for acceptance. However, innovative and experience-oriented case studies that may encourage new lines of inquiry are also welcomed. We prioritize research that contributes to current knowledge in etiology, prevention, social policy, or treatment. Academic commentary on hot topics, systematic reviews, and brief reviews is also encouraged. We particularly welcome multimedia papers that include video or audio components to better illustrate methods or findings. Research can also be submitted to Addictive Behaviors Reports, an open-access journal that is particularly interested in 'non-traditional,' innovative, and experience-oriented research, such as negative/empty data papers, replication studies, case reports on new therapies, and cross-cultural research.
