The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA, 1990) changed the landscape for individuals with disabilities significantly. Its ramifications can be seen in the ramps and handicapped parking spots outside almost every public building in the United States. This article will give a brief outline of the components of the ADA Amendments Act (ADAAA, 2008), clarify how disability is defined under that law, and give the eye-care practitioner guidance on determining whether a patient qualifies for accommodations under the ADAAA. We will delineate the accommodations that would be appropriate for a patient’s impairment, and describe ethical advocacy for a patient who wants to request accommodations.
