In this work, one-dimensional arrays of cylindrical adaptive liquid crystal lenses were manufactured and characterized; and test devices were filled with nematic liquid crystal. Comb interdigitated electrodes were designed as a mask pattern for the control electrode on the top glass substrates. A radial graded refractive index along each microsized lens was achieved by fabricating a layer of high resistance sheet deposited as a control electrode. These tunable lenses were switched by applying amplitude and frequency optimized waveforms on the control electrode. Phase profiles generated by the radial electric field distribution on each lens were measured by a convectional interferometric technique.

Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals, established in 1966, is a leading journal worldwide that publishes original research papers on experimental and theoretical properties in three specialized areas: liquid crystals, molecular crystals, and low-dimensional solids. Topics covered include, but are not limited to: liquid crystals - electro-optic and magneto-optic phenomena; thermodynamics; phase transitions; structural bodies; nuclear magnetic resonance and orientation-controlled spectroscopy; theory. Molecular crystals - spectroscopy; energy and charge transfer; solid-state reactions; light and radiation effects. Low-dimensional solids - structural, electronic, magnetic, and optical properties; transport mechanisms. The journal publishes research articles, review papers, and book reviews. In all three areas, experimental manuscripts describing preparation and characteristics will be considered. Papers that only describe crystal structure determinations are discouraged unless certain solid-state forces (such as hydrogen bonding, charge transfer, etc.) play a significant role and/or certain solid-state properties of the materials are measured.
