Spartina alterniflora Loisel (S. alterniflora) is native to the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of NorthAmerica and was introduced to China in 1979. Over the years, S. alterniflora played an important role in protecting coastal banks, accelerating sediment deposition, improving local economies, and alleviating natural disasters. As an exotic species, S. alterniflora has a very strong capability of propagation, which has caused some negative effects, such as occupying ecological niches of some seashells and blocking harbors by fast sediment deposition.As a result, ecological control of S. alterniflora in some areas has drawn wide attention from biologists and ecologists in China and abroad. For this paper, we studied the technology of topography and hydrology modification to substitute S. alterniflora with P. asutralis and reported our results in a project applying this technology. Furthermore, we studied various ways to make use of biomass of S. alterniflora and found that such ways were a good alternative to ecological control of S. alterniflora.

Ecological Engineering is defined as the design of ecosystems for the mutual benefit of humanity and nature. This journal is aimed at ecologists who are involved in the design, monitoring, or restoration of ecosystems due to their research interests or professions, serving as a bridge between ecologists and engineers. The specific topics covered by the journal include habitat reconstruction, ecological technology, synthetic ecology, bioengineering, restoration ecology, ecological conservation, ecosystem restoration, stream and river restoration, coastal ecology, and the conservation of non-renewable resources. We only accept descriptions of specific applications of ecological engineering that add novelty to current research and emphasize the context of ecosystem restoration. Purely descriptive reports on ecosystem structure (such as vegetation surveys), purely physical assessments of materials available for ecological restoration, small-scale model studies of artificial (wastewater) water or crop research conducted in laboratories or greenhouses, or case studies on conventional wastewater treatment and eutrophication that do not provide ecosystem restoration methods in the paper will not be accepted.
