Abstract: The paper explores the readership formation of an emerging modern Indian vernacular literature in the late nineteenth- and first four decades of the twentieth- century, and investigates the political significance of print as a new way of publishing. It simultaneously explores the tactics deployed by the vernacular intelligentsia to overcome the absence of an economically sound entrepreneurship in the print industry in Assam. While the Assamese print arena had to negotiate with the challenges posed by presence of an adjacent powerful print culture, that was, the Bengali print world, it also suffered from its backwardness in education which consequently resulted in the lack of readership. The paper explores the Assamese publicists’ attempt to impose a boundary on its target readers.
