Based on a review of City literature,this research points out the misunderstanding of Shanghai's global status measured by the Globalization and World Cities(GaWC).In order to clarify development strategies and metropolitan roles of Shanghai as a global city,comparisons between Shanghai and a series of some other top global cities like London,New York and Hong Kong are made.Both the positive and the negative aspects of Shanghai's global competitiveness are discussed.Those discussions are expected to contribute the understanding of Shanghai's future role as both a national city and global city.The research can also provide guidance for developing the Yangtze River Delta global city region.
