This brief presents a novel design of a compact wideband tunable phase shifter with low in-band phase deviation. Different from the implementation structures of conventional tunable phase shifters, the proposed design is composed of two microstrip lines, two varactor-loaded coupled lines, and an open-circuit stub, which can perform the characteristics of low phase error, large phase shift range, wide operating bandwidth, and compact size simultaneously. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that a relatively large phase shift range and small phase error can be realized by choosing appropriate electrical parameters of the coupled lines and microstrip lines. The measurement results indicate that the fabricated tunable phase shifter operating at 1.9 GHz can provide a maximum continuously tunable phase shift up to 225.5° within the 21.1% fractional bandwidth, with a maximum in-band phase error of ± 3.22°. Meanwhile, the insertion loss is less than 3.95 dB over the operating band.
