ABS>The possible modes of action of radioprotective substances at the molecular level are discussed with particular reference to Russian literature. Some recent Russian reports on new radioprotective methods are reported. Removal of radionuclides from the body by chelating agents is also discussed. (BBB)

VALUE OF RADIOPROTECTIVE SUBSTANCES IN THE LIGHT OF RECENT RADIOBIOLOGICAL RESEARCH

In rats, an anabolic steroid, 19-norandrostenolone phenylpropionate (depot Durabolin), was found to appreciably influence the course of total-body irradiation given in a single 800-rad dose (LD/sub 50/30/); among rats surviving 30 days the histological appearance of the testes was markedly different from that in the controls. The animals were injected with 5 mg of the steroid 24 hr prior to irradiation. Within 30 days 36% of the injected and 56% of the control animals died, thus showing a 20% difference in survival rate in favor of the steroid-treated animals. Histological examination of the testes was performed on the 7th, 31st, 52nd, and 60th days postirradiation. In the sections stained with hematoxylin-eosin the testes of the 7-day irradiated controls showed a loose structure of the germinal epithelium and irregular nuclear staining. On the 31st day the epithelium in the testes of controls was completely disrupted. The nuclei were barely recognizable on the 52nd day, and signs of fatty degeneration appeared. On the 60th day the steroid-treated animals still showed occasional nuclear staining and spermia in the ducts. Thus, in the testes of steroid- treated animals the degenerative changes caused by ionizing radiation took place later and were less severe than inmore » the controls. The arrangement of the gastric muscles of men, dogs and cats was studied from the aspect of functional anatomy. The stomach is divided into 8 segments on the basis of its vascularisation, musculature, structure and function. The muscular structures of the walls of the different segments are different. It was found that the sphincter of the pylorus is formed by the outer longitudinal muscle. The internal oblique muscle separates the sac and the tube system, while the circular musculature contributes mainly to the transport of nutrition.

By means of electrometric surface measurements a peculiar pH-map of the mucosa of normal and vagotomized dog stomachs was obtained illustrating the different acid producing capacities of the various regions of the stomach, on the one hand, and showing that all types of vagotomy will reduce local acid secretion.
