The journal "Acta Ornithologica" publishes scientific papers in all fields of ornithology, including original research articles, reviews, and short communications. All manuscripts undergo peer review. It was first published in 1933 under the title ACTA ORNITHOLOGICA MUSEI ZOOLOGICI POLONICI and has continued under its current title since 1953. Sponsored by the Museum and Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, it is published biannually by the NATURA OPTIMA DUX Foundation.

Nest sites of nine common hole-nesting bird species were studied in the West Khentey Mountains, NE Mongolia.Among three excavators, the Great Spotted Woodpecker used more aspens, larger trees, and more living or intact dead trees than the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker or the Willow Tit.Among non-excavators, the Nuthatch used mainly old holes of the Great Spotted Woodpecker, and the Red-throated Flycatcher frequently used those of the Willow Tit.Thus, the nest site characters of these two species resembled those of the original excavators, and their nests were placed higher than those of other non-excavators.The Coal Tit and the Great Tit used mostly branch holes in living trees.With respect to nest site use, the Daurian Redstart behaved as a generalist while the Common Treecreeper specialized in long slits.The nest site selection of excavators might be governed by body size, territory size and their different abilities of excavation.The non-excavators were best differentiated by their preferred hole type, and their tree use and nest site characters were mainly a consequence of the location of such holes.Interspecific competition did not appear to be important in the nest site use of hole-nesting birds in the study area.

Nest-site Characteristics of Hole-Nesting Birds in a Primeval Boreal Forest of Mongolia

The reproductive behaviour of Wood Warblers was studied in a primeval forest area in the Białowieża National Park (E Poland). Observations carried out during twelve seasons (1976–1979,1985–1988, 2002–2005) in deciduous and coniferous old-growth habitats spanned a 30-year period. The present paper examines whether the birds advanced their breeding dates during that time and whether any long-term shifts in fecundity or productivity were detectable. Though temperatures in the settlement period (the second half of April) rose, neither males nor females significantly advanced their dates of arrival. Wood Warblers bred earlier in 2002–2005 than in the two previous periods — the combined effect of earlier female arrival and shortening of post settlement breaks. Clutch size declined with season, was smaller in the coniferous habitat and in rodent outbreak years, but no long-term trend was perceptible. Apart from two exceptionally successful years (2003 and 2004) breeding losses remained high during the whole study. Predation was responsible for 80–95% of them and was concentrated on the nestling stage. Overall Wood Warbler phenology and breeding performance in BNP have changed relatively little during the last 30 years. These findings support the results of other studies demonstrating the remarkable resilience of this primeval forest biota to environmental change.

Changes in Breeding Phenology and Performance of Wood Warblers<i>Phylloscopus sibilatrix</i>in a Primeval Forest: A Thirty-Year Perspective

Changes in biometric characteristics of a migrating bird population at a given capture site could reflect that the migration strategies of the species may be changing. A robust data set (15,520 records) was used to analyse the changes in biometric characteristics of the Eurasian Blackcap Sylvia atricapilla in western Hungary between August and October during the study period (2001–2019). All age and sex classes displayed similar phenology of monthly captures and biometric change: the average wing length, fat score and body mass increased in the migrating population from August to October. This could be explained by changes in the morphometric distribution of different migrating populations, in later months more birds might arrive from a larger distance, primarily from the Baltic regions and the Czech Republic. The biometrics of juvenile birds captured in August did not change significantly from 2001 to 2019, while the wing lengths decreased and fat scores increased significantly between 2001 and 2019 in September and October in both sex classes. This could be explained by a change in the migration distance or different morphology of individuals from the north which stopped over at the study area. Due to the global warming and habitat changes in the last decade, the shorter migration route and favourable conditions at overwintering areas north of the Sahara or around the Mediterranean could favour Blackcaps which migrate a shorter distance.

Temporal Changes in Wing Length, Fat Reserves and Body Mass of Migrating Eurasian Blackcaps Sylvia atricapilla at a West Hungarian Stopover Site

Agricultural expansion at the expense of natural habitats and the intensification processes in agricultural production are globally among the main causes of biodiversity and ecosystem services loss at large scale. This process can completely alter food provision for birds and have negative consequences for their diet and breeding performance. Under the hypothesis that changes in land use limit food resources for raptors, our aim was to analyze variation in nestling diet between natural areas and areas with different degrees of agricultural intensification (natural forest, traditional farmland, intensive farmland) in a population of American Kestrel Falco sparverius breeding in nest boxes and cavities. Through the analysis of pellets and prey remains collected during the reproductive season of 2012–2013 we found no differences in diet diversity among areas and the diet in the three areas was monopolized by arthropods. However, the diet did change in composition between areas. Numerically, Orthoptera dominated the diet in the three areas, although with a higher percentage in the forest area. The frequency of vertebrate consumption was affected positively by the area occupied by natural forest and stubble, while the soybean cover affected the consumption in a negative way. In both agricultural areas, the diet was complemented with different groups of arthropods suggesting that changes in land use generate a functional response in the American Kestrel that is able to take advantage of available resources in each sampling area. Long-term analysis of diet variation within the framework of agricultural intensification and its relation with demographic parameters and individual performance will allow to evaluate the impact of this variation in the diet on kestrels.

Diet Variation of a Generalist Predator, the American Kestrel Falco sparverius, in a Gradient of Agricultural Intensification in Central Argentina

Some waterbird species are believed to have an impact on other waterbird species as they are able to usurp a limited habitat and destroy vegetation. In this study, we have analysed the nesting dynamics of five waterbird species: Grey Heron Ardea cinerea, Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo, Little Egret Egretta garzetta, Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax and Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis, that had settled in a colony in the Royal Castle Park of Racconigi (Cuneo, NW Italy) over a 17-year period (2000 to 2017). The Great Cormorant and the Cattle Egret settled in the colony in 2008 and 2012, respectively. We analysed the relationships between the number of breeding pairs of the five species. In addition, we used the time series forecasting method to study the nesting dynamics and the impact of the new settlements on the pre-existing colony. The number of nests of the Great Cormorant and the Cattle Egret increased annually, and these species significantly affected the nesting trends of the other pre-existing species: Grey Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron and Little Egret. The Grey Heron mainly suffered from the occupation of its old nests by the Great Cormorant from 2008 to 2013. However, since 2014, the Grey Heron has been able to react, by displacing its breeding site to the tops of trees adjacent to the old heronry, and this has resulted in an even greater number of nests than before 2008. The Black-crowned Night Heron and the Little Egret suffered more from the settlement of the new species than the Grey Heron did, and started to suddenly or gradually abandon the breeding site. The colony has been modified profoundly by the settlement of the Great Cormorant and the Cattle Egret, and it is still subject to dynamics that could transform it in the coming years.

Birds are under selective pressure to orient their nests in a direction that reduces the impact of climatic extremes and the risk of the nest being detected by predators. Woodpeckers (Picidae), despite raising young in tree cavities that are safer from predators, should orient the entrances of their nest cavities in a direction that results in a favorable cavity microclimate. Because Picid nest cavity orientation is not well-studied in the Pacific Northwest of North America, we measured nest cavity orientation of White-headed Dryobates albolarvatus, Hairy D. villosus, and Black-backed Picoides arcticus Woodpeckers, Northern Flicker Colaptes auratus, and Williamson's Sapsucker Sphyrapicus thyroideus within burned and unburned, dry conifer forests of the eastern Cascade Range in Washington, USA (N = 684). Each woodpecker species had a mean angle of nest cavity orientation in a northerly or easterly direction and ranged from 12.3° for the Northern Flicker to 117.6° for the Black-backed Woodpecker. Hairy Woodpeckers, Northern Flickers, and White-headed Woodpeckers showed strong evidence for nonrandom nest cavity orientation, and Northern Flickers showed particularly high dispersion with a multimodal distribution of cavity orientations. Although the mean and variance of cavity orientations did not differ substantially between woodpeckers, cavity orientation differed based on nest tree species. Woodpeckers may orient their nest cavities in an easterly direction so that cavities warm quicker in the morning, to avoid hot afternoon temperatures and prevailing west and north westerly winds, and because the majority of cavities were located in burned forest where shading from canopy cover is reduced.

Woodpecker Nest Cavity Orientation in Dry Conifer Forests of the Pacific Northwest, USA

Nesting is a prerequisite for breeding in a wide range of birds, and nest-sites become a key resource ultimately influencing individual fitness. In that context, reuse of nest-sites by breeding pairs has been observed in a variety of bird species. White-collared Swifts Streptoprocne zonaris constitute one example in which reuse of nest-sites from previous reproductive seasons has been reported. In this study we explored this behaviour in the main location of the species in Cuba, the natural area of Topes de Collantes (south-central Cuba), where breeding pairs occupy several natural rocky caves. We also studied nest-sites locations to identify determinants for reuse and followed nest content to quantify nesting success. During a three-year period of study, 82 nests were constructed in 67 nest-sites at three nesting colonies located at the area. Nest-sites were occupied in the four placement-location combinations at the caves: ceiling-hole, ceiling-ledge, wall-hole and wall-ledge, and were located at a height range of 0.90 to 9 m. A total of 31 nest-sites were reused at least once, which implies an incidence of nest-site reuse for the area of 46.3%. Nest-site reuse was related to characteristics of the nest-site location: reused nest-sites were less often observed at the ceiling-ledge combination as well as at the highest locations in the caves. Nesting success was measured as success in producing at least one fledgling, and was higher in reused (87.1%) than in not-reused (59.5%) nest-sites. These results confirm the existence of some benefits of nest-site reuse in the Cuban populations of the White-collared Swift, suggesting that the high quality breeding pairs might detect and select particular nest-sites to guarantee a successful breeding. This study also highlights that conservation of the caves and their natural characteristics at the natural area of Topes de Collantes is key for the Cuban populations of the species.

Nest-Site Reuse by the White-Collared Swift Streptoprocne zonaris in Rocky Caves in South-Central Cuba

A large part of European forests is managed using modern forestry techniques, and it is interesting to explore the relationships between forest bird abundance and variables describing the forests from the perspective of forest managers. The aim of our study was to identify these relationships through nation-wide bird monitoring and forestry data in Czechia. After controlling for the effect of altitude, the forest characteristics that exhibited a significant effect on the abundance in the highest number of species are the proportion of conifers, growth phase and tree damage. In the next step, we performed a principal component analysis to reveal general patterns in those species-specific responses. The main gradient obtained was determined by altitude and discriminated species associated with lowland forests (e.g. Common Starling Sturnus vulgaris, Spotted Flycatcher Muscicapa striata) from those associated with highland forests (e.g. Red Crossbill Loxia curvirostra, Tree Pipit Anthus trivialis). This suggests an important role of altitudinal climate zones in shaping forest bird abundance. The second gradient showed a cluster of species with higher abundance in broad-leaved forests with higher stem density, more vegetation layers, and more damaged (e.g. Common Redstart Phoenicurus phoenicurus, European Pied Flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca). At the opposite end were clustered species with higher abundance in more coniferous forests, lower stem density, fewer vegetation layers and less damaged (e.g. Eurasian Siskin Spinus spinus, Crested Tit Lophophanes cristatus). The second gradient can be explained by forestry practices applied in Czechia. Specifically, broad-leaved forests generally have a longer logging cycle compared to coniferous forests, resulting in generally older stands exhibiting more signs of damage and multiple vegetation layers, while coniferous forests predominantly maintain a single-vegetation layer structure. Bird association with growth phase was independent from altitude and other forest characteristics.
