Acta Palaeobotanica is an international journal edited in English by the W. Szafer Institute of Botany, Polish Academy of Sciences, Kraków, since 1960, which publishes original palaeobotanical, palynological, palaeoecological and palaeophytogeographical papers, monographs, review and discussion articles and book reviews. It is the only journal in the Central and Eastern Europe publishing papers from all fields of palaeobotany. The journal is published regularly in one volume per year, with two numbers.

We analysed pollen and macro-charcoal from a sediment core representing the last 9840 cal yr BP, collected at 2003 m a.s.l. in a patch of upper montane Atlantic Rain Forest (UMARF) embedded in a campos de altitude (high-elevation grassland) matrix in the Serra dos Órgãos National Park, southeastern Brazil. From 9840 to 4480 cal yr BP, campos de altitude (CDA) was the dominant vegetation at the site, indicating that the climate was relatively cool and dry. However, pollen data document that UMARF was near the core site throughout the recorded Holocene. Relatively frequent high-magnitude fires occurred during the Early Holocene but became rarer in the Mid-Holocene after 4480 cal yr BP, when the climate became wetter. In the Mid-Holocene, UMARF and tree fern taxa became slightly more frequent at the site, but CDA vegetation continued to dominate most of the high-mountain landscape. A climatic change to wetter and warmer conditions during the last 1350 cal yr BP is evidenced by an increase in UMARF and even lowland forest taxa in our core, as well as the near complete absence of fire after this date.

Holocene vegetation, climate and fire dynamics in the Serra dos Órgãos, Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil

Based on macroremains, we describe three fossil plant assemblages from the Miocene of the Messara Basin (southern Crete) and the adjacent Gavdos Island. The palaeoflora of Kassanoi, which is the oldest (Messara Basin, Viannos Fm, Serravallian/early Tortonian), is documented mainly by leaf imprints, including a fern, a conifer (Tetraclinis cf. salicornioides) and 23 angiosperms. The assemblage is dominated by Daphnogene polymorpha, Podocarpium podocarpum and Myrica lignitum. The plant record from Pitsidia (Messara Basin, Ambelouzos Fm, early Tortonian) comprises thousands of specimens. The plant fossils are preserved as imprints often covered by an inorganic encrustation (replica). One alga, 2 ferns, at least 5 conifers and more than 45 woody angiosperms were identified. Dominant taxa are Myrica and Pinus pitsidiensis, documented by numerous vegetative and reproductive organs (Zidianakis et al., 2015, 2016). Leaves of oaks (Q. pseudocastanea, Q. kubinyii) and Daphogene polymorpha as well as twigs of Taxodium dubium are also fairly common. From the palaeoflora of Metochia, which is the youngest (Gavdos Island, Metochia Fm, middle Tortonian), (Mantzouka et al., 2015), we report further taxa, including Quercus mediterranea, Ziziphus paradisiaca and a palm (Sabalites sp.). The vegetation is assessed both empirically (phytosociologically) and by Integrated Plant Record (IPR) Vegetation Analysis. The reconstructed vegetation models are presented in detail and discussed in the context of the geological and palaeontological settings of the area. The climate is assessed based on the Coexistence Approach (CA) and the Climate Leaf Analysis Multivariate Program (CLAMP). The palaeoclimatic datasets reveal a warm temperate to subtropical climate, probably with a weak seasonal drought.

Three (middle to) late Miocene plant macroremain assemblages (Pitsidia, Kassanoi and Metochia) from the Messara–Gavdos region, southern Crete

The paper presents preliminary results of archaeobotanical studies carried out at the Madīnat Ilbīra site in Spain. The functioning of the town, which was the capital of one of the administrative districts (kūras) of al- Andalus, falls in the period between the second half of the 9th century and the 11th century. However, the analysed soil samples were collected from archaeological contexts dated mostly to the last decades of the 10th century and to the 11th century. The samples yielded an interesting set of data about the preserved plant remains. Although the taxonomic diversity of the plants is not high, the analysis revealed remains of naked and hulled wheat (emmer wheat), millet, poppy seeds, perhaps peas, cucumber or melon, and grapevine. Although crop plants played an important role in the everyday diet of the town inhabitants, wild plants also were probably collected and used. The latter are represented in the analysed materials by, for example, wild strawberry, common mallow and common purslane. The preserved charcoal remains confirm the use of different species of wood as fuel.

Plant use in Muslim Spain: Preliminary results from the medieval town of Madīnat Ilbīra

The economically important but relatively small family Theaceae can be traced back to the Late Cretaceous and is found today in the Western Hemisphere and Asia. Theaceous fruits are generally loculicidal capsules and have been found as fossils throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Using reflected light and μCT-scanning, we recognize Anubiscarpon andersonae MA Smith et Manchester gen. et sp. nov. from the middle Eocene Clarno Formation of north central Oregon, based on five-valved, loculicidal capsules with a central columella, persistent perianth and pedicel, preserved as impressions in lacustrine shale. Its most distinctive feature is its apically clefted valves which are not seen in any other species of the family. Anubiscarpon augments our understanding of former morphological diversity in the Theaceae

A new bisexual flower, Singpuria kapgatei, gen. et sp. nov., is described from chert of latest Cretaceous age from the Deccan Intertrappean Beds at Singpur, Madhya Pradesh, in central India. The hypogynous, actinomorphic flower is ~1.6 mm wide, with distinct sepals and petals. The androecium consists of 18 tetrasporangiate, dithecal, basifixed anthers borne in radial pairs on nine bifurcate filaments. The gynoecium is superior and syncarpous, with pentagonal symmetry. Pollen from the stamens is tricolporate and microreticulate. The combined morphological features of this flower indicate that Singpuria is a eudicot with affinities in the Pentapetalae, but we have been unable to make a more precise assignment. Nevertheless, we consider it useful to place this rare fossil flower on record as an exemplary extinct member of the Deccan biota. Singpuria may represent a clade that was isolated on the Indian subcontinent and became extinct in response to environmental changes at the K/Pg boundary, or later in the Cenozoic as the land mass moved northward through new climate zones and collided with Eurasia.

Singpuria, a new genus of Eudicot flower from the latest Cretaceous Deccan Intertrappean Beds of India

Several samples of fossilized wood (charcoal) were collected in the Papayita archaeological site, in coastal Ecuador. This carbonized material was encountered inside a layer of volcanic ash that sealed the site. The ash-sized tephra was produced by a sub-Plinian eruption from the Guagua Pichincha volcano contemporaneous with the late Valdivia phases during the Formative Period. Each of the samples was sectioned into 10 to 15 subsamples and examined under a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), producing high-resolution images with a large depth of field where the anatomical structures and their geochemical composition were vividly discernible. Each sample corresponds to organic matter of vegetable origin, that is, carbonized wood in the form of small rocks, whose appearance is that of carbonized woody tree trunks and or branches. We were able to observe vascular structures, specifically bundles of xylem. It was possible to conclude that these tracheids underwent a physicochemical transformation typical of petrification processes, leaving the molds intact. This allowed us to determine structural elements that support the identification of the group of plants to which these samples belong, through the methodology of comparison of the anatomical components of current species. The fossilized wood structures are three-dimensional and present characteristics that correspond to the group of higher plants, Gymnosperms, of the Podocarpaceae group. Among them, quadrangular tracheids, circular hole-shaped pits in the vascular system, and absent resin canals stand out. Central to the analysis is the presence of transverse parenchyma, which can be ascertained to correspond to vegetation from climates that are temperate or cold.

Characterization and chronology of charcoal found in the volcanic ashfall that impacted a late Valdivia community in coastal Ecuador

The main objective of this research was to conduct a comparative pollen morphological analysis of some representatives of the genus Cuscuta in relation to taxonomy. Investigations of 38 species and 1 variation revealed that not only the number, but the colpi length, as well as the exine ornamentation (at the SEM level), can be regarded as a diagnostic feature. For all the taxa studied, the common zonocolpate type of pollen was observed, represented by three variations: I) colpi long; II) colpi of medium length; III) colpi short. In combination with colpi length, variations in the number of colpi were also identified, such as: I) 3(4)-zonocolpate pollen grains with long colpi (in most of the species studied from subgenera Grammica and Cuscuta, as well as in C. monogyna from the subgenus Monogynella); II) 4(3)-zonocolpate pollen grains, with long colpi (C. cristata from subgenus Grammica); III) 3-zonocolpate pollen grains both with long colpi and colpi of medium length (C. abyssinica from subgenus Cuscuta and C. africana, C. angulata from subgenus Pachystigma); IV) 3-zonocolpate pollen grains with colpi of medium length were noted for species from all four subgenera (C. cassytoides, C. lupuliformis from subgenus Monogynella, C. kotschyana from subgenus Cuscuta, C. nitida from subgenus Pachystigma and C. jalapensis, C. rostrata, C. suaveolens from subgenus Grammica); V) 3–4- or 4-zonocolpate, with short colpi (C. lehmanniana and C. gigantea from subgenus Monogynella respectively); VI) 5–6-zonocolpate, with short colpi (C. reflexa from subgenus Monogynella). Using SEM, three main types of exine ornamentation were also identified: perforate, foveolate and reticulate. The last type in the vast majority of the cases was presented in combination with echinae (rarely with spines or granules). The data revealed that the presence of the significant similarity of palyno-morphological characteristics in representatives of the subgenera Cuscuta, Pachystigma and Grammica, with the exception of the species Lepidanche adpressa (syn. C. compacta), makes it difficult to create an identification key at the level of individual subgenera. Pollen features can be most clearly used only to distinguish the subgenus Monoginella, reflecting its certain isolation within the entire Cuscuta genus. The presence of a highly specialized reticulate exine ornamentation in Lepidanche adpressa (syn. C. compacta), not identified for the pollen of any of the studied taxa of the subgenus Grammica, indicates a significant proximity of this species to the subgenus Monogynella. For the species C. reflexa, the obtained palyno-morphological data are consistent with the previous opinion about the separation of this species, as well as its more advanced position within the genus Cuscuta.

Palynological studies of some species of the genus Cuscuta with emphasis on taxonomy

Distinctive, reticulately sculptured ellipsoidal endocarp impressions have been discovered in Middle Miocene lake deposits of Idaho and eastern Oregon in the northwestern USA. We describe a new species based on these endocarp impressions and compare them morphologically with previously described extinct and extant species of Sabia (Sabiaceae) using light microscopy and micro-CT scanning. Sabia megacarpa sp. nov. endocarps are distinguished by their large size but resemble other species of Sabia in their asymmetric elliptical shape, reticulate surface ribs, unilocular morphology and gland-dotted endocarp surface. Although Sabia is now native to Southeast Asia and Malesia, the fossil record indicates this genus was formerly present in Europe and North America. The new species indicates that Sabia survived until at least 16 million years ago in western North America.

Two neighbouring Eemian (MIS 5e) palaeolakes, discovered during works on reambulation of the Garwolin sheet of the Detailed Geological Map of Poland (scale 1: 50 000), revealed differences in the palynological record of the succession of the Eemian interglacial. In the profile of Parysów WH-125, a very pronounced hiatus in the transition from the mesocratic to the telocreatic period, i.e. from the hornbeam to the spruce-fir zone, is visible. In the pollen diagram of Niesadna, the maximum percentages reached by Quercus, Corylus and Carpinus are very low, although this is undoubtedly an Eemian succession. The reasons for this should be sought in the presence of several sedimentary gaps probably caused by the different geological and geomorphological conditions of the Niesadna palaeolake located on a slope as opposed to the Parysów palaeolake, which was formed by the melting of a block of dead ice in the process of deglaciation of the area during the late Saalian (MIS 6). An additional rationale for the hypothesis of extremely unfavourable conditions for undisturbed sedimentation in Niesadna palaeolake is its geological-geomorphological situation that caused admixtures of mineral material in the organic sediment, including sand intercalations, indicating that erosion was taking place. The two developed pollen successions were presented against other published data on the Eemian interglacial in the Garwolin Plain, with particular emphasis on the continuity of the Eemian succession. The palynological results showed that the Parysów WH-125 profile joins several other profiles lacking representation of the upper part of the hornbeam zone and sometimes also the lower part of the spruce-fir zone (e.g. Żabieniec, Jagodne). On the other hand, the presence of distinct sedimentary gaps in the oak, hazel, and hornbeam zone, as is the case in the Niesadna profile, has not been recorded in any of the profiles in the Garwolin Plain examined to date. The Eemian pollen succession in the studied Niesadna and Parysów palaeolakes is presented against the broader background of the course of this interglacial in the European Lowlands.

A differentiated palynological record of the Eemian interglacial in two palaeolakes Niesadna and Parysów from the Garwolin Plain (Central Poland)

In this contribution, we analyze the presence of fossil coniferophytes from the Bajo de Veliz Formation (Paganzo Basin) that were initially referred to Walchia or Paranocladus and have not been described until now. These specimens consist mainly of leafy branches exhibiting foliar heteromorphism characteristic of upper Paleozoic coniferophytes from Gondwana. This group includes Genoites sp. with lax arranged ovules on the last order branches, Krauselcladus sp. represented by a small vegetative branch with biand trifurcated leaves, and Buriadia cf. Buriadia heterophylla Seward et Sahni emend. Serbet, Escapa, Taylor, Taylor et Cúneo, 2010, showed axes with multifid leaves and ovules on terminal branches. Vegetative fragments with small lanceolate leaves are assigned to Ferugliocladus cf. F. riojanum Archangelsky et Cúneo, 1987. In addition, an isolated, probably male reproductive structure similar to those known for th latter species was identified. The presence of Buriadia is recognized for the first time in the Carboniferous-Permian of Argentina, as well as the identification of vegetative buds or shoots, a previously undocumented characteristic for this Paleozoic coniferophyte from Gondwana.
