Preliminary results on multielement analysis of human lung tissues with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) are reported. Three different sample preparation procedures have been studied; dry ashing at 450 degrees C or low temperature ashing followed by pressure digestion with aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid or direct acid digestion with nitric-, sulfuric- and perchloric acid.

Polarographic Determination of Thallium in Urine

Abstract The hepatotoxic effects of carbon tetrachloride (0.01 ml/kg i.p.), thioacetamide (50 mg/kg intraperitoneally), paracetamol (0.5 g/kg intraperitoneally), and allyl alcohol (0.05 ml/kg intraperitoneally) as estimated by determination of serum enzyme activities (GOT, GPT, SDH) were enhanced in mice treated with one oral dose of 4.8 g/kg ethanol 16 hrs. previously. Pretreatment of mice with ethanol did not increase the hepatotoxic actions of bromobenzene (0.25 ml/kg intraperitoneally), phalloidin (1.5 mg/kg intraperitoneally), α-amanitin (0.75 mg/kg intraperitoneally), and praseodymium (12 mg/kg intravenously) though there was a trend to higher enzyme activities in the case of bromobenzene. In guinea-pigs ethanol also aggravated CCl4-induced liver damage, but only strengthened the hepatotoxic activity of D-galactosamine (150 mg/kg intraperitoneally). Treatment with 4.8 g/kg ethanol did not influence liver glutathione levels in mice but increased aniline hydroxylation in the 9000 × g liver homogenate supernatant of mice and guinea-pigs. A dose of 2.4 g/kg ethanol, on the other hand, neither increased aniline hydroxylase activity nor enhanced carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity in mice. It is assumed that the enhanced sensitivity to hepatotoxic agents after treatment with ethanol may be due to an enhanced microsomal activation of these substances.

The Influence of Ethanol Pretreatment on the Effects of Nine Hepatotoxic Agents

The effect in mice of 8 subcutaneous injections of 20 microgram of L-thyroxine at 12 hr-intervals on the carnitine concentration in the heart and skeletal muscle tissue was studied. In skeletal muscle tissue, the thyroxine treatment resulted in a depressed carnitine concentration. The mean values were 1.59 +/- 0.034 (S.E.M.) and 2.03 +/- 0.045 mumol/g noncollagen protein and 1.11 +/- 0.035 and 1.45 +/- 0.037 mumol/g dry weight for the thyroxine treated and the control animals, respectively. Thyroxine produced myocardial hypertrophy. The thyroxine treated animals had lower cardiac values when dry weight was used as reference base 4.17 +/- 0.10 mumol/g dry weight than the control group, 4.69 +/- 0.18 mumol/g dry weight. No statistically significant difference was found between the two groups when the cardiac carnitine concentration was expressed per g noncollagen protein or as carnitine in the entire hearts. Thus, thyroxine has been showed to influence the metabolism of carnitine in mice.
