Using population register data, we examine how intermarried parents’ choice of ethnic registration of their children is associated with the offspring's probability of having a tertiary-level education. The study context concerns two ethnic groups, Finnish speakers and Swedish speakers in Finland, which are native and have equal constitutional rights, but have unequal admittance rates to tertiary-level education. We find that a mixed background per se does not play any crucial role for educational attainment, but that own ethnic affiliation matters. Swedish-registered males and females with mixed background are more likely to be higher educated than their Finnish-registered counterparts. The difference is more pronounced if it is the father and not the mother who is Swedish registered. These findings illustrate that intermarried parents’ ethnic registration of their children may have far-reaching consequences for the children's educational opportunities. Intermarried parents may well opt for the minority group if the choice may promote the child's future educational chances.

Ethnic registration and tertiary-level education of children of mixed native couples: Register-based evidence from Finland

Drawing on insights from political sociology and political economy, this article examines the socioeconomic consequences of entrenched ethnopolitical clientelism in postsocialist Montenegro. As a country that experienced its first electoral transfer of power in 2020, Montenegro's political transition was marked by state capture by the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), a dominant party that structured the national economy to serve its political interests and support its clients. Throughout its three decades of dominance, the DPS not only developed effective clientelist mechanisms to secure popular support but also employed populist rhetoric to justify these and other undemocratic practices as necessary defenses against the “ethnonational other”, portrayed as intent on undermining Montenegro's statehood. This rhetoric deepened ethnonational antagonisms and strategically inhibited alliance-building across ethnopolitical cleavages that could have threatened DPS rule. Using multivariate analysis on a unique longitudinal dataset spanning 2007 to 2020 (N = 33,889), this study provides empirical evidence that DPS supporters were more likely to secure employment ( mass clientelism) and advance to higher income categories ( elite clientelism). The findings also indicate that Serbs faced discrimination not due to their ethnicity per se, but because they were the only ethnonational group overwhelmingly and consistently opposed to the DPS regime and its policies following Montenegro’s independence in 2006.

This article examines Sweden's COVID-19 strategy from the perspective of the global epistemic field. We propose that the policy choices of national governments are conditioned by the global epistemic field that constitutes the problem, the range of potential techniques to handle it, and relevant viewpoints used in assessing their advantages and risks. New, innovative techniques can emerge, and choices can vary, but they are debated and justified in terms of the evolving global set of discourses premised on the fundaments of the epistemic field. In this article, we examine to what extent deviant policies are part of the global set of discourses that evolved at the outset of the pandemic. To address this question, we take Sweden's COVID-19 strategy as an example and study how it was constructed and justified in the national public in 2020. The results of our empirical analysis show that the argument of epistemic field also applies to deviant policies. Even though Sweden's corona strategy deviated much from other countries, including its neighboring countries, the grounds of justification used in debating the strategy were consistent with the global epistemic field.

Navigating in the global discourse: The case of Swedish COVID-19 strategy

Amid growing public and policy concerns there is a great need for a systematic analysis of the relationship between commodity industries and social disorganization. Using data from the ONS, the UK Census, the UK Police Street-level Crime Dataset, and the POI Ordnance Survey, we analyse the association between gambling outlets as an example of a commodity industry and crime events across England and Wales and explore the possibility of a heterogeneous effect dependent upon the level of deprivation and residential stability of an area. Our findings show that gambling outlets are significantly and positively associated with different types of crime even when controlling for other businesses, the areas’ demographic and socio-economic characteristics. Small businesses provide distinctive shielding effects – in areas of high density of small business owners, there is no significant correlation between crime types and gambling density. Our results have significant policy implications.
