Acta Veterinaria Brno is a scientific journal of the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno in the Czech Republic. Czechs commonly share their homes with pet animals. However, the likelihood of transmission of filamentous fungi (FF) between the pet and the owner is not well known. The aim of this study was to define the frequency of such transmission. At the same time, the degree of closeness of owner-animal cohabitation, the effect on the spectrum of shared FF and health risk assessment were defined. The effect of previous antibiotic therapy on fungal flora was also assessed. In total, 150 pet owners and 135 pet animals from 125 households provided 911 samples; 80 non-owners provided 320 samples. All owners completed a questionnaire focusing on the level of contact with the pet and information on previous antibiotic treatment. The relationship between the contact index (CI) and the effect of previous antibiotic treatment on the number of FF species shared was quantified. Results were compared with those of non-owners. The CI was very close (CI &gt; 4) in 131 owners (87.3%). A total of 110 FF were isolated. Common FF were found in 42 households (33.6%); 65 FF were identified in the non-owners. In the last year, 46 pets, 43 owners and 25 non-owners used antimicrobial agents. Aspergillus niger was most prevalent in owners and pets and Alternaria alternata in non-owners. The degree of contact intimacy did not seem to have any effect on the joint abundance of FF, but antibiotic treatment had a significant effect on FF abundance in non-owners. This effect was not significant in either owners or pets.

The impact of sharing a home with a pet on the physiological state of the human microbiome: a comprehensive study on the Czech population with a focus on filamentous fungi

Protection against water- and air-borne bacteria as well as their detection at very low levels is a big challenge for the health care profession. The study’s main goal was to prepare bacterial filters with a tunable trapping effectivity. We revealed that the trapping efficiency of Escherichia coli estimated from the optical density of bacteria passed through the filter was exponentially dependent on the surface density of the polyacrylonitrile nanofibre membranes. This log/linear regression profile was proven for bacterial trapping efficiency higher than 99.9% which opens a door for easy and tunable constructions of ultrasensitive filters and/or nanosensors as well as for the standardization and quality control of nanofibre membranes.

Bacteria trapping effectivity on nanofibre membrane in liquids is exponentially dependent on the surface density

The aim of this study was to investigate the foetal sex related difference and progression in maternal serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) concentrations during different points of time in pregnant Arabian mares. The study groups formed by 12 healthy male offspring- and 12 healthy female offspring-foaling mares, designated as group MFM and group FFM, respectively. Peripheral blood samples were collected on the day of natural mating and then monthly until the 6 th month (mo) of gestation. Serum AMH was measured in all serum samples; eCG was measured in samples collected from 2 to 5 months Of gestation. Serum AMH concentrations of group FFM at mo 4 and mo 5 (3.89 ± 0.49 ng/ml; 2.89 ± 0.32 ng/ml), were significantly higher than in group MFM (2.11 ± 0.46 ng/ml; 1.87 ± 0.32 ng/ml), ( P &lt; 0.05). The mo of gestation (mo 1–6) had no effect on serum AMH concentrations of either group MMF or FFM ( P &gt; 0.05). Serum eCG concentrations of group FFM at mo 2 (359.73 ± 41.51 mIU/ml), were significantly higher than in group MFM (255 ± 21.18 mIU/ml) ( P &lt; 0.05). Group-time interaction for eCG concentrations at mo 2–4 was non-significant ( P &gt; 0.05). Concentrations of serum AMH showed no relationship with corresponding eCG levels at mo 2–4 ( P &gt; 0.05). Individual variations in AMH and eCG concentrations and the inability to determine a cut-off point for determination of foetal sex make these hormones unlikely candidates for determining foetal sex in the mare.

Evaluation of serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) concentrations in pregnant mares in relation to foetal sex

The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of spontaneous tumours in guinea pigs in biopsy and necropsy samples in the monitored period (2016–2022) on a representative number of cases and to determine their occurrence in relation to age and sex of the animals. A total of 204 samples from various pathological lesions were examined, while 153 cases (75.00%) were true tumours and 51 cases (25.00%) were pseudotumorous non-neoplastic lesions. The distribution of the incidence of true neoplasms in relation to sex was uneven. In the examined group, more neoplasms were diagnosed in males (n = 88, 57.52%) compared to females (n = 65, 42.48%). The mean age of guinea pigs with diagnosed tumour in our group was 4.2 years. Thyroid adenocarcinoma was the most frequent tumour. The majority of thyroid tumours (67.86%) were diagnosed in animals aged 4–5 years, as a significant result in terms of incidence in this age range, as well as a predisposition to tumour formation in males (78.57%). Mammary gland tumours occurred in the age range of 2–7 years, with a mean age of incidence of 4.7 years. In all cases, these were malignant variants and showing a significant higher incidence in males, in the age range of 4–5 years. The processing of a representative number of samples and epidemiological data on the incidence of spontaneous tumours in guinea pigs can contribute to the overall expansion of knowledge about this topic in veterinary medicine.

Incidence of spontaneous tumours in guinea pigs: a retrospective study of 153 cases

The shelf life of fresh meat and fish is highly dependent on packaging technologies. The aim of any packaging system for fresh flesh foods is to prevent or delay undesirable changes to the appearance, flavour, odour, and texture. Moreover, microbial contamination, together with lipid and protein oxidation, are major concerns for meat and products thereof in terms of food safety. Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) is widely applied in the packaging of both meat and fish. This packaging technology extends shelf life and improves appearance; however, several variables must be considered, such as temperature control and differences in gas compositions in combination with different types of meat. This review provides an overview of the available information on packaging technologies, from the perspectives of their characteristics, application types, and effects on the shelf life of poultry, meat, and fish. Special attention is paid to the MAP and active packaging.

Meat and fish packaging and its impact on the shelf life – a review

The aim of this study was to verify the relationship between the degree of severity of neurological signs in dogs with thoracolumbar intervertebral disc disease (TL-IVDD) and the magnitude of spinal cord compression on the computed tomography (CT) transverse view of the vertebra at the site of the greatest narrowing of the spinal canal caused by extruded disc material. In a total of 78 dogs with TL-IVDD, the greatest narrowing of the spinal canal at the site of greatest spinal cord compression was observed in the T11-T12 region (48.35 ± 20.70%) and the smallest in the L2-L3 region (33.06 ± 15.40%). There was a significant difference in the percentage of spinal canal narrowing between the L2-L3 region and the T11-T12 ( P = 0.034), T12-T13 ( P = 0.033) and T13-L1 ( P = 0.022) regions, respectively. Females showed a significantly higher percentage of spinal canal narrowing compared to males ( P = 0.029); the highest percentage of spinal canal narrowing was found in neutered females compared to intact females ( P = 0.013), neutered males ( P = 0.029), and intact males ( P = 0.001), respectively. In addition, the dogs included in the study were divided into a group of chondrodystrophic (n = 55) and a group of nonchondrodystrophic (n = 23) dogs. Dogs of chondrodystrophic breeds generally showed a highly significantly ( P = 0.001) more severe degree of neurological signs compared to dogs of nonchondrodystrophic breeds. Results of this study can be useful in veterinary practice diagnostics.

Relationship between the severity of neurological signs in dogs with thoracolumbar intervertebral disc disease and the magnitude of spinal cord compression by disc extrusion as assessed by computed tomography

This study aimed to strengthen the antioxidant defenses against the toxic effect of mercury, by administering a synthetic antioxidant (vitamin E) and a natural product rich in antioxidant compounds (virgin olive oil) to rabbits. Hepatic and renal biomarker levels, cortisol and testosterone synthesis, mercury concentration, relative weight of organs, and tissue architecture were studied. The results showed a significant decrease in the plasma alkaline phosphatase (ALP), plasma aspartate aminotransferase (AST), serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), plasma testosterone levels, and relative weight of the liver, testes, and adrenal in the mercury treated group (group M), while the other indices were significantly increased in the m-group compared to the control (group C). However, the group treated with olive oil combined with mercury (group O) showed a significant decrease in the ALP, AST, ALT, testosterone levels, and adrenal relative weight, while plasma creatinine, uric acid levels, mercury concentration in organs, and the kidney relative weight were significantly increased. Vitamin E supplementation (group E) led to a significant decrease in the ALP, testosterone levels, and adrenal relative weight, a significant increase was observed in plasma levels of triglycerides, creatinine, and uric acid. Histological sections of the liver, kidney, testis, and adrenal of group M showed severe tissue damage, while the other groups showed less important tissue alterations demonstrating that supplementation with natural or synthetic antioxidants can protect against the toxicity of heavy metals such as mercury, improving the health of rabbits.

The protective role of virgin olive oil and vitamin E on mercury-induced hepatic, renal, testicular and adrenal toxicity in the rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)

Bovine ephemeral fever is an arthropod-borne viral disease that primarily affects cattle and causes economic losses mainly due to the sudden decrease in milk yield. We aimed to reveal the biochemical reflection of the acute phase response by detecting the changes in serum acute phase proteins in cattle naturally infected with the bovine ephemeral fever virus. The material of this study consisted of 21 Simmental dairy cows (4–6 years old) naturally infected with bovine ephemeral fever virus (infected group) and 10 clinically and serologically healthy Simmental dairy cows (control group). The prevalence of the disease in suspected cattle was 52 per 100. It was determined that in infected cows levels of serum haptoglobin, serum amyloid A ( P &lt; 0.001), and ceruloplasmin increased significantly ( P &lt; 0.05), whereas levels of albumin decreased significantly ( P &lt; 0.05). It is thought that the acute phase proteins variation pattern for bovine ephemeral fever would be beneficial both in better understanding the pathogenesis of the disease and in determining the diagnosis and prognosis correctly.

Evaluation of acute phase response in cattle with naturally infected bovine ephemeral fever virus

Three client-owned dogs presented with dysuria and stranguria. Prostatic and bladder trigone neoplasms were diagnosed, and these patients also exhibited flat ribbon-like stools. One patient had previously undergone cutaneous ureterostomy after radical cystectomy but experienced recurrent ostia stenosis and severe uremic dermatopathy. Ureterostomy was performed as a salvage procedure, diverting urine to either the uterine stump or the prepuce. The patients recovered well, resulting in an improved quality of life. Unfortunately, one patient died during the immediate postoperative period due to pulmonary metastasis. The uterine stump is considered a better option for ureterostomy as it provides a greater barrier against ascending infections compared to ureteral anastomosis in the vagina, theoretically. These modified ureteral anastomoses offer a viable urinary diversion for patients undergoing complete cystectomy, maintaining an anatomic route for urination. The procedure of modified preputial ureterostomy, without the performance of penectomy, reduces postoperative morbidity and provides increased protection for the ostia. This study aims to describe a modified technique for ureterostomy following total cystectomy in dogs, diverting ureters either to the prepuce or the uterine stump, while preserving the original voiding ostium.

Preputial ureterostomy and uteroureterostomy for total cystectomy in 3 dogs

The aim of the study was to evaluate treatment protocols for improvement of clinical and bacteriological cure rate of non-severe clinical mastitis (CM) and selective dry cow therapy (SDCT). Mastitis management based on on-farm commercial culture system MicroMast TM and data analysis were implemented into two dairy herds. Quarters with evidence of Gram-positive agents were treated using benzyl penicillin or amoxicillin and/or by amoxicillin with clavulanic acid. In herd A, 31 quarters of non-severe CM were recorded. Of them, Streptococcus uberis was isolated in 16 (51.6%), non-aureus staphylococci (NAS) in 8 (25.8%), E. coli in 5 (16.1%) and no growth in 2 (6.5%) cases. Bacteriological cure was observed in 24/29 (82.8%) quarters. Antimicrobial consumption was reduced from 3.56 to 2.33 doses per case. Under the SDCT protocol, 28 quarters (13.2%) of 53 cows dried-off were included, achieving a reduction by 86.8% on the quarter level. In herd B, 23 quarters of non-severe CM were recorded. Of them, S. uberis and Escherichia coli were identified equally in 8 (34.8%) samples and NAS in 2 (8.7%) samples and with no growth in 5 (21.7%) cases. Bacteriological cure was achieved in 17/18 quarters (94.4%). Antimicrobial consumption was reduced from 4.45 to 1.83 doses per case. Only 5 (1.7%) quarters of 72 cows were included for SDCT with reduction in consumption of antimicrobials by 98.3% on the quarter level. In summary, innovated treatment protocols based on results of on-farm culture enabled a significant reduction of antimicrobial consumption and improvement of bacteriological cure rate in conditions of practise.
