Abstract ‘Sexual and romantic development, early parenthood, and emerging adulthood’ explains that as adolescents start to become reproductively mature at puberty, interest in sexual behaviour and partnerships increases. From associating primarily with same-sex friends during middle childhood, there is typically an increased interest in relationships with the opposite sex from the early to mid-teens onwards. Some experience of same-sex sexual behaviours is also not uncommon, and a minority of adolescents will describe themselves as lesbian, gay, or bisexual. Intimate partnerships start to be formed, with sexual and romantic elements. The issues of dating violence, sexting, teenage pregnancies, and early parenthood are considered along with the extended period of development in emerging adulthood.

Abstract Adolescence is a period of transition between life as a child and life as an adult. The World Health Organization defines it as from ages 10 to 19. Biologically, entrance into adolescence can be marked by the onset of puberty. Socially, it can be marked by increasing independence from parents; increasing importance of the peer group; and, often, mood swings, conflicts with parents, and risky or reckless behaviours. Adolescence has some universal features, but the nature and even timing of adolescence shows important cultural and historical variations. ‘Adolescence as a life stage’ outlines the evolution of human adolescence and provides anthropological, sociological, historical, psychological, and developmental neuroscience perspectives.

The causes of drug addiction are extremely complex and varied, and defining drug dependence is not an easy task. I will therefore refer to them in this chapter but will not attempt to solve in totality the many questions that these issues immediately bring to mind. Many of the youngsters who suffer from a compulsion to use drugs do so because of a powerful psychological dependency that pushes them towards drugs in order to avoid, regulate or run away from extremely painful and distressing inner experiences. However, the powerful psychological component of drug dependency should not make us ignore the issue of ensuing physical dependency, although I will not expand on this point as it is beyond the scope of this chapter. The question of physical dependency must be borne in mind what thinking about adolescents who are so seriously addicted to a drug that their craving becomes a major priority; in other words, these youngsters who are physiologically as well as psychologically dependent on their drugs.

Medieval adolescence is a slippery concept. On the one hand, there is plenty to suggest that medieval people did comprehend a life stage occurring between the end of childhood and the beginning of adulthood. Its entry points were variously marked by biological markers, points of legal passage from incapacity to capacity, and training for adult life. Its exit points were indicated by consummated marriage, parenthood, occupational identification, and financial responsibility. On the other hand, it is not possible to nominate a single age range for medieval adolescence, nor to identify activities, personal characteristics, and life experiences universally applicable to young people. Social status, regional location, religion, and especially gender had a profound impact on the stage's definition. Women's adolescence, in cultural conception and social practice, was often shorter, with distinct imagery and cultural meanings. Scholars have largely rejected Philippe Ariès's suggestion that before the eighteenth century '[p]eople had no idea of what we call adolescence' (Ariès 1962:29), though early medievalists have found less evidence for the transitional stage, and for the period as a whole we have learned to set aside modern definitions and focus on medieval concepts and experiences.

In this chapter I shall look at some central psychoanalytic contributions to the understanding of adolescence. I shall outline some theories that I have found useful in my psychoanalytic work with adolescents and give short vignettes as examples of the use of these theories in two specific areas. Firstly, I shall illustrate the continued relevance of Freud's developmental theory and the reworking of early Oedipal relationships from early adolescence onwards. Secondly, I shall look at the development of psychological structures in adolescence, which can lead to specific adolescent states of mind, and I shall illustrate how the adolescent's use of their mind and sense of their body can be affected in severe disturbances.

The individual who is prone to violent behaviour as a means of resolving internal conflicts is influenced by a continuing, conscious or unconscious fantasy life that is dominated by violence. 1 In this chapter I will examine the choice and function of a violent role model or ego ideal before and after puberty and the part it plays in reinforcing violence as a defence against breakdown in adolescence. I will illustrate my points with case material from a 16-year-old adolescent I will call Stan, who physically attacked another boy. After being taunted by an intimidating bully named Grummond, Stan took his father's cricket bat and hit Grummond repeatedly. He was quickly restrained by a number of his friends, although he struggled to inflict more injury on Grummond.
