Abstract The research was conducted to study the performance of cucumber under protected conditions with different plastic mulches. This experiment was conducted in a split plot design, having irrigation levels as main plot and mulches as subplots. The study revealed that mulching helped to maintain the soil moisture higher than bare soil and black mulch showed higher soil temperature and soil moisture (23.3%) under 100% irrigation. Plant height and yield was also influenced by mulching. Plant height and yield decreased in relation to reduction of the irrigation level. The highest water use efficiency (WUE) was found under 50% irrigation and black mulch plot (32 kg·m −3 ). In conclusion, black mulch with 100% irrigation performed well among the treatments because of higher moisture and favourable soil temperature. In consideration of WUE, black mulch with 50% irrigation performed well.

Soil and Water Conservation Engineering Techniques to Modify the Rhizosphere Climate of Cucumber (Cucumis Sativus L.) for Improving Water Use Efficiency and Yield

Abstract Winter wheat is one of the widespread crops in Ukraine. The search for methods to increase the yield and consumer properties of wheat, without compromising environmental safety, is one of the important scientific problems. The principles of precision agriculture point to the proper positioning of the seeds, recommending the method of “upward germination” (positioning the wheat germ vertically). The main objective of this study was to develop a new geometric model of wheat grain with a displaced centre of mass, as well as to conduct the theoretical research and numerical experiments on the orientation of grains using their multiple impact interaction with inclined surfaces. A new model of germ consisting of two different end semispheres and amid-line truncated cone was proposed, with a displaced centre of mass. Taking into account the physical properties of the objects, the concept of arrangement of gravity orientation of seeds in a stream was applied. This concept was based on various ratios of kinetic parameters of bodies with a displaced centre of gravity following an impact. The results showed that the orientation process can be controlled by changing the inclination angles and the length of the walls of the tray orientator within the working velocity range. This must be done before impact interaction of 0.2-0.3 m s −1 when the inclination angles of the impact interaction planes are 24-32°C.

Modelling Wheat Grain Flow During Sowing Based on the Model of Grain with Shifted Center of Gravity

Abstract The article contains an analytical review and perspectives of robotic technologies in horticulture. Trends in the growth of production, implementation, and sales of robots in various regions of the world are revealed. The analysis showed a lag in the introduction of agricultural robots compared to other sectors of the economy, as well as a significant gap between the countries of the Asian region and other continents. A review of technical means of three main components of ground agricultural robots is considered: navigation systems, sensors, and platform design. Examples of constructing a tree trajectory using the A* algorithm and using the Rviz visualization tools and the Github PathFindings graphical web service are given. As a result of the conducted research, the use of Lidar sensors is recommended, which will make it possible to design the route of robotic platforms, build maps by scanning a previously unknown surrounding space and updating the resulting map at each step of the algorithm in real time. The use of existing modern sensors with an optical rangefinder with a resolution of 4.5 million pixels, a frame rate of 25 frames per second and the ability to automatically adapt to the light level in combination with stereo cameras and GPS/GLONASS navigation will improve the positioning accuracy of robotic platforms and ensure autonomous operation. To perform basic technological operations for the care of plantings with row spacing of 2.5-4 m, a tree crown height up to 3-3.5 m with intensive technologies, the following design parameters of a robotic platform are required: agro-treatment of at least 1200 mm, adjustable track width of 1840-2080 mm, weight not more than 400 kg, load capacity not less than 1000 kg, the power of the power plant is not less than 5 kW.

Robotic Technologies in Horticulture: Analysis and Implementation Prospects

Abstract Numerical models approximating a kernel shape in wheat cv. Eta were developed with the use of a 3D scanner and applied to analyze selected geometric properties of wheat kernels. Geometric models were built in ScanStudio HD PRO, FreeCAD, and MeshLab programs. Ten geometric models describing the shape of wheat kernels were generated with the use of basic geometric figures and drawing tools in FreeCAD. The geometry of numerical models and geometric models was compared in GOM Inspect. The surface area, volume, and accurate geometric dimensions of the developed models were determined. Deviations in the dimensions of geometric models were mapped. The relative error of surface area measurements was the lowest in solid of revolution obtained by rotating a polygonal chain around an axis at 0.36%. The relative error of measurement reached 4.44% in sphere and around 5% in solid of revolution obtained by rotating two curves around an axis and solid of revolution obtained by rotating three curves around an axis. The relative error of volume measurements was the lowest in rotational ellipsoid (spheroid) and ellipsoid at 3.58% and 4.48%, respectively. The developed geometric models can be used in research and design.

Modeling the Shape of Wheat Kernels with the Use of Solids of Revolution

Abstract Aqueous extracts of plants with proven biostimulant activity may have the potential to inhibit the growth and development of plant diseasecausing fungi. The potential use of extracts in such a role has many advantages including the fact that extracts are biodegradable, less costly, and readily available. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of aqueous infusions, decoctions, and macerates extracted from burdock roots, wormwood leaves, lovage roots, flax seeds, and mullein flowers as bioprotectants. This study was carried out by testing in vitro the ability of these bioprotectants to inhibit the growth of the fungi Thielaviopsis basicola (Berk. and Broome), and Fusarium avenaceum (Fr.) Sacc, Fusarium culmorum (Wm.G. Sm.) Sacc., Fusarium sambucinum (Fuckel), Fusarium solani (Mart.) Sacc., Rhizoctonia solani (J.G. Kühn), Botrytis cinerea Pers., Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib. de Bary), causing disease in soybean. The antifungal activity of macerates, infusions, and decoctions determined by the diffusion method in Petri dishes with solid PDA medium showed the potential of the tested aqueous extracts as bioprotectants able to inhibit the growth of fungi, causing soybean diseases.

Abstract The object of the study is the process of separation of seed material according to the seed density on the working surface of the pneumatic sorting table. The main defining design variables and linkage parameters of the equipment are analyzed, which realizes the process of separation of seed materials, and is coordinated with physical and mechanical variables of raw materials. The principles of modeling of seed material layer movement as a multiphase medium are provided. Under the effect of working surface vibrations and the power of an airstream the layer take on the properties of pseudoliquid. The criteria of chosen variables are presented, on which depend quality and quantity indicators of the separation process of seed materials according to the seed density. Optimal values of the separator linkage parameters are analytically determined and dependence diagrams are built. Secant lines of surfaces for a concrete crop (raw material) are performed. The “purity” of heavy fraction during the variation of indicated parameters is studied. It is proved that there are differences in types of the dependences: different decreasing of functions and increasing of airstream velocity. It is obvious that this nature is determined by difference in density of original raw materials. This way the smallest influence a change in the air-stream velocity causes to soybean raw material, as soybean has the biggest density. At the same time, the biggest affect is provoked on sunflower seeds, which have the smallest density among the used types of raw materials, as well as a triangle form. It is determined that the maximal frequency of the basic fraction, gained by the separation of wheat seed material on PST, is obtained under the airstream velocity in the range 1.3-1.5 m·s −1 . For corn the rational air-stream velocity falls in the range 1.3-1.6 m·s −1 , for sunflower – 1.2-1.4 m·s −1 , for soybean – 1.2-1.4 m·s −1 . These figures are valid under the condition of using the relevant rational decisions of frequency and amplitude of vibrations of pneumatic sorting table deck during the separation of grain mixtures, as well as longitudinal and transverse angles of inclination. The veracity of experimental studying results is proved by the corresponding theoretical models of the process.

Determination of Ways of Improving the Process of Separation of Seed Materials on the Working Surface of the Pneumatic Sorting Table

Abstract The paper presents the results of research on the problem of the influence of various types of unmalted grain and its quantitative share on important parameters of the malt extract. The aim of the work was to control what precentage of unmalted grain can be added to malt, so that their starch is saccharified only thanks to the action of endogenous malt enzymes. The grains of millet, oats, buckwheat and spelt were used as unmalted raw materials. The basis of the mixture subjected to extraction was Pilsner type barley malt. The percentages of the additives ranged from 5 to 50%. Both the unmalted grain and the malt were crushed. The extract was prepared with the use of two methods: congress and infusion. Saccharification time, pH and extract content were tested. The results were analyzed statistically. It was found that the amount and type of unmalted raw material influenced the saccharification time of starch and the content of the extract and had no effect on the pH of the extract. Millet grain starch was saccharified if its amount was about 40% of the tested mixtures. In other variants of the experiment, endogenous malt enzymes were able to break down the starch when the amount of additive was as high as 50%.

Effect of the Addition of Selected Unmalted Raw Materials to Barley Malt on Selected Parameters of Malt Extracts

Abstract An important task of food engineering, namely grain processing and the pro-duction of cereals and fodder, is the improvement of hulling equipment and the creation of complex technological lines for the processing of the original crops is gaining particular relevance. The reason for this is the need to carry out several preparatory stages, and, as a result, the use of additional equipment. To solve this problem, a string hulling device had been developed, the use of which allows reducing the number of operations due to the exclusion of preliminary sorting into fractions and wet-heat treatment. These operations are required by other hulling machines included in the technological lines of buckwheat processing. The structural scheme of the string hulling device had been developed and the principle of the shell removal operation had been substantiated. Theoretical studies had been carried out by the methods of analysis and synthesis of the mechanics of destruction and systematic analysis of the process of buckwheat hulling by impact. Experimental studies had been carried out using a laboratory string hulling device. The conducted analytical studies made it possible to determine the regularity between the physical and mechanical characteristics of buckwheat and the critical linear impact speed necessary for the destruction of the shell. This allows deter-mining the frequency of rotation of the string at which the destruction of the shell will occur while preserving the integrity of the core. Experimental studies made it possible to determine the quality of buckwheat hulling by determining the coefficient of integrity of the kernel and the coefficient of hulling. It has been determined that the ranges of the rotation frequency of the strings required to ensure a high degree of the buckwheat hulling technological process efficiency are within 15.8-16.9 s −1 .

Design and Efficiency of a String Hulling Machine for Buckwheat

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics related to the removal of moisture from green banana slices and the effect of the drying conditions on color and vitamin C preservation using a drying system based upon the use of a vacuum heat pump. The green banana slices underwent drying at 40, 50, and 60°C with vacuum pressure levels of 0, 40, and 80 kPa. The average drying time decreased by 18.9% and 32.7% as the vacuum pressure and temperature increased, respectively. Six thin-layer models underwent assessment to explain the kinetic process involved in moisture removal using the vacuum heat pump set to provide differing experimental circumstances, and fitted to experimental data. Results showed that the characteristics of moisture removal from the green banana slices could most appropriately be explained by the Page model. There is in increase in effective moisture diffusivity, which ranged from 1.1658×10−10 to 1.9717×10−10 m 2 ·s −1 , with increases in temperature and vacuum pressure. Energy of activation ranged from 15.99 to 19.73 kJ·mol −1 , which was explained by an exponential expression based on the Arrhenius models. The drying temperature of 50°C under a vacuum pressure of 80 kPa could preserve the vitamin C content by a maximum of 55.9%, which is the optimal drying condition for obtaining good product quality.

A Study on Drying Characteristics, Color, and Vitamin C Preservation of Green Banana Slices Using a Vacuum Heat Pump System

Abstract The aim of the study was to determine the effect of ozone fumigation and spraying with microorganisms, i.e. yeast, on selected physiological parameters, and the extent of disease infection of tomato plants. Tomato plants were grown in the ground under covers. Throughout the 2021 and 2022 growing season, the plants were exposed to variable factors, i.e. fumigation with gaseous ozone at a dose of 2 ppm for 1 minute and spraying with yeast. After ozonation and spraying with yeast, physiological measurements were made on tomato plants, such as: selected parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence (maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry) and gas exchange parameters (transpiration rate, stomatal conductivity and intercellular CO 2 concentration). In addition, the content of chlorophyll using the SPAD method as well as plant infection by diseases was determined. Compared to the control sample, ozonation resulted in a slight decrease in the physiological parameters of tomato plants. In addition, no visible leaf damage was observed after the ozone gas fumigation process. However, the use of microorganisms did not significantly change the examined physiological parameters. Both after the application of gaseous ozone and microorganisms, a significant impact of the tested variable factors was found on reducing the infection of tomato plants by diseases such as: tomato late blight, tomato alter-nariosis, gray mold, bacterial canker of tomato and bacterial spot of tomato.
