Deep-ultraviolet nonlinear optical (DUV NLO) crystals are indispensable for solid-state lasers to produce coherent light with wavelengths shorter than 200 nm, yet their structure design still faces great challenges because two groups of conflicting properties must be satisfied simultaneously, i.e., "large second harmonic generation (SHG) response-large band gap" and "large birefringence-weak growth anisotropy". Clearly, hitherto, no crystal can perfectly satisfy these properties, including KBe2BO3F2. Herein, we design a new mixed-coordinated borophosphate Cs3[(BOP)2(B3O7)3] (CBPO) by optimizing the matching of cation and anion groups, which unprecedentedly achieves a balance for two groups of contradictions concurrently for the first time. In the structure of CBPO, it has the coplanar and π-conjugated B3O7 groups, which can make it possess a large SHG response (3 × KDP) and large birefringence (0.075@532 nm). Then, terminal O atoms of these B3O7 groups are connected by BO4 and PO4 tetrahedra, which eliminates all dangling bonds and blue shifts the UV absorption edge to the DUV region (165 nm). More importantly, owing to the judicious selection of cations, the size of cations and void of anion groups is a perfect match, which makes CBPO possess a very stable three-dimensional anion framework and thus reduces the crystal growth anisotropy. A CBPO single crystal with a size of up to 20 × 17 × 8 mm3 has been successfully grown, through which a DUV coherent light has also been achieved in Be-free DUV NLO crystals for the first time. These indicate CBPO will be the next generation of DUV NLO crystals.

Cs3[(BOP)2(B3O7)3]: A Deep-Ultraviolet Nonlinear Optical Crystal Designed by Optimizing Matching of Cation and Anion Groups

The low toxicity and a near-ideal choice of bandgap make tin perovskite an attractive alternative to lead perovskite in low cost solar cells. However, the development of Sn perovskite solar cells has been impeded by their extremely poor stability when exposed to oxygen. We report low-dimensional Sn perovskites that exhibit markedly enhanced air stability in comparison with their 3D counterparts. The reduced degradation under air exposure is attributed to the improved thermodynamic stability after dimensional reduction, the encapsulating organic ligands, and the compact perovskite film preventing oxygen ingress. We then explore these highly oriented low-dimensional Sn perovskite films in solar cells. The perpendicular growth of the perovskite domains between electrodes allows efficient charge carrier transport, leading to power conversion efficiencies of 5.94% without the requirement of further device structure engineering. We tracked the performance of unencapsulated devices over 100 h and found no appreciable decay in efficiency. These findings raise the prospects of pure Sn perovskites for solar cells application.

Highly Oriented Low-Dimensional Tin Halide Perovskites with Enhanced Stability and Photovoltaic Performance

CsSnI3 is an unusual perovskite that undergoes complex displacive and reconstructive phase transitions and exhibits near-infrared emission at room temperature. Experimental and theoretical studies of CsSnI3 have been limited by the lack of detailed crystal structure characterization and chemical instability. Here we describe the synthesis of pure polymorphic crystals, the preparation of large crack-/bubble-free ingots, the refined single-crystal structures, and temperature-dependent charge transport and optical properties of CsSnI3, coupled with ab initio first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In situ temperature-dependent single-crystal and synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction studies reveal the origin of polymorphous phase transitions of CsSnI3. The black orthorhombic form of CsSnI3 demonstrates one of the largest volumetric thermal expansion coefficients for inorganic solids. Electrical conductivity, Hall effect, and thermopower measurements on it show p-type metallic behavior with low carrier density, despite the optical band gap of 1.3 eV. Hall effect measurements of the black orthorhombic perovskite phase of CsSnI3 indicate that it is a p-type direct band gap semiconductor with carrier concentration at room temperature of ∼ 1017 cm–3 and a hole mobility of ∼585 cm2 V–1 s–1. The hole mobility is one of the highest observed among p-type semiconductors with comparable band gaps. Its powders exhibit a strong room-temperature near-IR emission spectrum at 950 nm. Remarkably, the values of the electrical conductivity and photoluminescence intensity increase with heat treatment. The DFT calculations show that the screened-exchange local density approximation-derived band gap agrees well with the experimentally measured band gap. Calculations of the formation energy of defects strongly suggest that the electrical and light emission properties possibly result from Sn defects in the crystal structure, which arise intrinsically. Thus, although stoichiometric CsSnI3 is a semiconductor, the material is prone to intrinsic defects associated with Sn vacancies. This creates highly mobile holes which cause the materials to appear metallic.

CsSnI3: Semiconductor or Metal? High Electrical Conductivity and Strong Near-Infrared Photoluminescence from a Single Material. High Hole Mobility and Phase-Transitions

To fabricate efficient formamidinium tin iodide (FASnI3) perovskite solar cells (PSCs), it is essential to deposit uniform and dense perovskite layers and reduce Sn4+ content. Here we used solvent-engineering and nonsolvent dripping process with SnF2 as an inhibitor of Sn4+. However, excess SnF2 induces phase separation on the surface of the perovskite film. In this work, we report the homogeneous dispersion of SnF2 via the formation of the SnF2–pyrazine complex. Consequently, we fabricated FASnI3 PSCs with high reproducibility, achieving a high power conversion efficiency of 4.8%. Furthermore, the encapsulated device showed a stable performance for over 100 days, maintaining 98% of its initial efficiency.

Fabrication of Efficient Formamidinium Tin Iodide Perovskite Solar Cells through SnF2–Pyrazine Complex

Perovskite-based solar cells have recently been catapulted to the cutting edge of thin-film photovoltaic research and development because of their promise for high-power conversion efficiencies and ease of fabrication. Two types of generic perovskites compounds have been used in cell fabrication: either Pb- or Sn-based. Here, we describe the performance of perovskite solar cells based on alloyed perovskite solid solutions of methylammonium tin iodide and its lead analogue (CH3NH3Sn(1-x)Pb(x)I3). We exploit the fact that, the energy band gaps of the mixed Pb/Sn compounds do not follow a linear trend (the Vegard's law) in between these two extremes of 1.55 and 1.35 eV, respectively, but have narrower bandgap (<1.3 eV), thus extending the light absorption into the near-infrared (~1,050 nm). A series of solution-processed solid-state photovoltaic devices using a mixture of organic spiro-OMeTAD/lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide/pyridinium additives as hole transport layer were fabricated and studied as a function of Sn to Pb ratio. Our results show that CH3NH3Sn(0.5)Pb(0.5)I3 has the broadest light absorption and highest short-circuit photocurrent density ~20 mA cm(-2) (obtained under simulated full sunlight of 100 mW cm(-2)).

The Blue Light Using FAD (BLUF) photoreceptor utilizes a noncovalently bound FAD to absorb light and trigger the initial ultrafast events in receptor activation. FAD undergoes 1 and 2 electron reduction as an enzyme redox cofactor, and studies on the BLUF photoreceptor PixD revealed the formation of flavin radicals (FAD•– and FADH•) during the photocycle, supporting a general mechanism for BLUF operation that involves PCET from a conserved Tyr to the oxidized FAD. However, no radical intermediates are observed in the closely related BLUF proteins AppABLUF and BlsA, and replacing the conserved Tyr with fluoro-Tyr analogs that increase the acidity of the phenol OH has a minor effect on AppABLUF photoactivation in contrast to PixD where the photocycle is halted at FAD•–. The hydrogen bonding network in BLUF proteins contains several strictly conserved residues but differs in the identity of amino acids that interact with the flavin C2═O. In PixD there are two hydrogen bonds to the C2═O, whereas there is only one in AppABLUF. Using TRIR we show that the introduction of a second hydrogen bond to the C2═O in AppABLUF results in the formation of flavin radicals (FAD•– and FADH•) during the photocycle. Subsequent replacement of the conserved Tyr (Y21) in the double mutant with 2,3,5-trifluoroTyr prevents radical formation and generation of the light state, indicating that the AppABLUF photocycle is now similar to that of PixD. The ability to trigger PCET provides fundamental insight into the role of electron transfer in the mechanism of BLUF photoactivation.

Single-Vesicle Electrochemistry in Fresh Brain Slices Enables In Situ Quantification of Vesicular Monoamine

Mini-emulsion and nanoprecipitation techniques relied on large amounts of surfactants, and unresolved miscibility issues of heterojunction materials limited their efficiency and applicability in the past. Through our molecular design and developed surfactant-free precipitation method, we successfully fabricated the best miscible bulk-heterojunction-particles (BHJP) ever achieved, using donor (PS) and acceptor (PSOS) polymers. The structural similarity ensures optimal miscibility, as supported by the interaction parameter of the PS/PSOS blend is positioned very close to the binodal curve. Experimental studies and molecular dynamics simulations further revealed that surfactants hinder electron output sites and reduce the concentration of sacrificial agents at the interface, slowing polaron formation. Multiscale experiments verified that these BHJP, approximately 12 nm in diameter, further form cross-linked fractal networks of several hundred nanometers. Transient absorption spectroscopy showed that BHJP facilitates polaron formation and electron transfer. Our BHJP demonstrated a superior hydrogen evolution rate (HER) compared to traditional methods. The most active BHJP achieved an HER of 251.2 mmol h–1 g–1 and an apparent quantum yield of 26.2% at 500 nm. This work not only introduces a practical method for preparing BHJP but also offers a new direction for the development of heterojunction materials.
