Abstract Objective We quantified seasonal changes in resource overlap among Walleye Sander vitreus , Smallmouth Bass Micropterus dolomieu , and Northern Pike Esox lucius in a glacial lake (Lake Kampeska, South Dakota) to evaluate potential competition. To determine whether habitat use might contribute to potential reduced competition for Walleye, we also compared resource use of Walleye in the lake to that of Walleye in a connected wetland. Methods We sampled our target species by using electrofishing and gill netting. We identified stomach contents to examine diet similarities, and we used Layman metrics and Bayesian ellipses to compare isotopic resource niches. Result Walleye had the greatest resource overlap with Smallmouth Bass, but overlap varied as diets changed seasonally. Multiple species exploited Yellow Perch Perca flavescens and White Bass Morone chrysops as prey, but only Walleye consumed bullheads Ameiurus spp. Walleye from the wetland had a distinct isotopic signature and broader isotopic niche, indicating a wetland resource signature. Conclusion Habitat diversity and connectivity in freshwater systems can limit the potential for intra‐ and interspecific competition while also increasing resilience to environmental change.

Variation in resource use and potential competition for Walleye across seasons and habitats

Abstract Objective Muskellunge Esox masquinongy anglers and biologists have expressed concern about catch‐and‐release (C&amp;R) mortality during summer months, especially in the southern portion of the species' range. Our objective was to quantify C&amp;R mortality for Muskellunge in a southern reservoir. Methods We conducted a radiotelemetry study in Stonewall Jackson Lake, West Virginia, a reservoir in the southern portion of the Muskellunge's distribution that supports a popular trophy fishery. We estimated C&amp;R and total mortality using radio‐tagged fish and evaluated changes to size structure under simulated warmwater season closures. Result All mortalities of tagged fish occurred during the warmwater period, when surface water temperatures tended to exceed 25°C (i.e., June–August), regardless of whether fish were angled (3 of 27; 11.1%) or not (3 of 65; 4.6%). Simulated season closures yielded only small increases in the numbers of fish reaching preferred (≥1020‐mm), memorable (≥1140‐mm), and trophy (≥1270‐mm) sizes across all simulations. Low mortality was likely due to the presence of ample thermal refuge availability within a well‐defined thermocline in Stonewall Jackson Lake. Conclusion Although we observed greater survival of Muskellunge angled during the warmwater period than has been reported in previous work, their catchability was also greater, which may contribute to greater total mortality in high‐use systems. Therefore, managers should consider the trade‐offs between survival and catchability as functions of thermal refuge availability when developing Muskellunge management plans.

Abstract Objective Invasions of nonnative fish species, such as Brook Trout Salvelinus fontinalis , disrupt ecosystem function and adversely impact native populations through competition, hybridization, and predation. Timely detection of invasive species is crucial for effective management and prevention of further spread. Environmental DNA (eDNA) technology is a powerful tool for monitoring the spread of invasive species, especially in aquatic environments, where direct observation is challenging. While eDNA sampling is sensitive and cost‐effective, real‐time analysis remains a challenge. Methods To address this limitation, we developed eDNA detection tools, using CRISPR‐Cas12a technology, that facilitate the rapid identification of invasive Brook Trout and native cutthroat trout (Lahontan Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus henshawi , Westslope Cutthroat Trout O. lewisi , Rocky Mountain Cutthroat Trout O. virginalis , or Coastal Cutthroat Trout O. clarkii ), without the need for specialized laboratory equipment. We employed this technology in Marsh Creek, a semi‐isolated tributary to the Sultan River in Washington State with no previous documentation of invasive Brook Trout. Result We successfully identified Brook Trout and cutthroat trout eDNA during on‐site analysis at Marsh Creek and found that the sensitivity of detecting these species can be increased with improvements in eDNA purification technology. Our results identified that Brook Trout were present in the lower reaches of the stream, particularly in areas of slow‐moving water. Conclusion The portability and simplicity of this method offer the potential for streamside eDNA detection of invasive species, and it could become another tool in the fight against the spread of invasive Brook Trout in the western United States.

Rapid identification of invasive Brook Trout through <scp>CRISPR</scp>‐based environmental <scp>DNA</scp> detection

Abstract Objective Although many Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha populations overlap in nearshore areas prior to spawning migrations, it is unclear how life history diversity influences physical condition and habitat use. Here, we explored multiple dimensions of Chinook Salmon marine ecology. First, does condition differ between immature and mature fish, among stocks, and between wild and hatchery individuals? Second, is abundance correlated with abiotic variables? Third, does habitat use consistently covary with life history stage, stock, and wild versus hatchery rearing history? Methods We collected data on Chinook Salmon stock identity, condition, and abundance using a fisheries‐independent troll survey along the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. We then fitted generalized additive models and geostatistical generalized linear models to quantify variability in condition, abundance, and spatial distribution. Result Fork length and lipid content varied seasonally, with maturation stage, and among stocks but did not differ with rearing history. Although immature fish were initially less lipid rich than mature fish, the lipid content of immature individuals ultimately exceeded that of mature individuals. Chinook Salmon abundance covaried with bottom depth, slope, and sampling date, while diel and tidal effects were weak. Abundance varied among ecological groups by up to an order of magnitude. Chinook Salmon habitat use differed among size‐classes and stocks but did not differ with rearing history. The spatial distributions of each size‐class changed over summer, consistent with ontogenetic dispersal and variation in the migration timing of spawners. Conclusion Seasonal changes in Chinook Salmon condition suggested that immature individuals transition from growth to lipid storage, emphasizing that prey availability may impact overwinter survival. Stock‐specific patterns in size, lipid content, and abundance highlighted ecological diversity during marine residence. Although distributions varied seasonally, abundance was greatest in high‐relief areas. Finally, our estimated spatial distributions suggest that responses to environmental conditions vary with ontogeny and among populations but not with rearing history.

Seasonal variability in condition and spatial distribution of Chinook Salmon: Implications for ecosystem‐based management

Abstract Objective Conservation and recovery efforts for depressed populations of wild Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha are improved by detailed classifications of basic natural history traits for juveniles across habitats. The Skagit River system in northern Puget Sound provides a unique opportunity to study the estuarine ecology of Chinook Salmon since it is home to the healthiest remaining natural‐origin Puget Sound Chinook Salmon spawning populations, and despite major anthropogenic habitat changes, the system still has extensive areas of estuarine habitat. Methods We evaluated density and length of juvenile natural‐ and hatchery‐origin Chinook Salmon across tidal delta, shallow intertidal, intertidal–subtidal, and neritic habitats in the Skagit River estuary from February to November 2002. Result Juvenile Chinook Salmon were captured in all habitats and months sampled, and clear seasonal transitions through habitats were observed, as were habitat and seasonal differences in fish density, length, and relative abundance of hatchery‐origin versus natural‐origin fish. Natural‐origin fish showed a protracted seasonal distribution across all habitats, and the relative abundance of hatchery‐origin fish was lowest in the tidal delta and highest in the neritic zone. Mean fork length increased as fish moved downstream and offshore, and hatchery‐origin fish were consistently larger than natural‐origin fish in all habitats and months. Hatchery‐origin fish from multiple source populations were recovered in Skagit Bay, but only individuals from the Skagit River were captured in tidal delta and shallow intertidal habitats, and the likelihood of capture in Skagit Bay was inversely related to the distance from the basin of origin. Conclusion These results confirm that an extensive and diverse range of estuarine habitats is used by juvenile Chinook Salmon through much of the year. Contrasts between hatchery‐ and natural‐origin fish suggest that estuaries—especially shallow fringing habitats in the tidal delta and along marine shorelines—are differentially important for natural‐origin fish and that the potential for interactions between hatchery‐ and natural‐origin fish differs depending on the habitat and time of year.
