Experiments were performed to test the effect of muscular fatigue on the relationship between smoothed rectified electrical activity (SREMG) and force in human muscles of different fiber compositions. Fatigue was shown to be produced by failure of a mechanism distal to the neuromuscular junction in three muscles tested: biceps brachii, triceps brachii, and adductor pollicis. Fatigue produced changes in SREMG in first dorsal interosseous, suggesting an effect at or proximal to the neuromuscular junction. Fatigue produced changes in the SREMG-force relationship only at high force levels in the pale triceps and biceps brachii, but produced a change throughout the force range in the red adductor pollicis. It is suggested that muscle units composed of pale fibers fatigue selectively in mixed muscles containing many such units, while fatigue effects are more difficult to produce and are distributed more uniformly in predominantly red muscles.

Interrupted-light photography was used to record the simultaneous displacement patterns of multiple body segments of 44 patients with parkinsonism during free-speed and fast walking to quantitatively characterize their gait peculiarities. The patients were categorized into three disability groups according to their independence in activities of daily living. Their measurements of walking performance were compared to those of normal men. The gait components of the patients, which related systematically to the degree of disability, were: step lengths, vertical excursions of the head, extension of the hip and knee of the backward-directed limb at the onset of contralateral weight bearing, toe-floor distance at the onset of weight bearing, and rotation of the thorax.

The head and neck movements of 16 cats undergoing sudden, unexpected falls have been assessed as a study preliminary to the investigation of reflex responses to the same stimulus. Six of the cats were studied while normal, and similarly tested at a later date to examine for any changes induced by making these animals pitch and roll insensitive, or by labyrinthectomy. The head and neck always described a sterotyped pattern of movement, consisting of progressive dorsiflexion of the neck without rotation of the head in space. This was unaltered by partial or complete loss of eighth nerve function. These findings are consistent with the head and neck movements of a falling cat being predominantly passive in origin, at least for the first 200 msec or so of an unexpected fall.
