The American Journal of Psychology (AJP) was founded in 1887 by G. Stanley Hall and was edited in its early years by Titchener, Boring, and Dallenbach. The Journal has published some of the most innovative and formative papers in psychology throughout its history. AJP explores the science of the mind and behavior, publishing reports of original research in experimental psychology, theoretical presentations, combined theoretical and experimental analyses, historical commentaries, and in-depth reviews of significant books.

Abstract Judith Kroll, together with Suparna Rajaram and Randi Martin, founded the Women in Cognitive Science organization, dedicated to advancing the status of women in the field, with its inaugural meeting in 2001. This article outlines the historical context in which the organization was formed (both internationally and in terms of the founders’ personal experience), the early years of the organization and its structure, its growth in membership and programs, its expansion to international sister organizations, and the recent transition to new leadership in 2021. Judith Kroll's leadership was pivotal at all steps. Her vision and dedicated and selfless efforts over 20 years helped ensure the success of the organization, which has touched the lives of many women in cognitive science around the world.

The Founding and Growth of Women in Cognitive Science: An Enduring Legacy of Judith Kroll

Abstract In recent years, the study of codeswitching has made great strides by leveraging a multidisciplinary approach that integrates insights from experimental psycholinguistics, corpus linguistics, cognitive psychology, neurolinguistics, and other allied fields. We provide an overview of 2 main strands of this research, focusing on the control process model of codeswitching (e.g., Green, 2018), the variable equivalence hypothesis (e.g., Torres Cacoullos, 2020), and the ways in which these accounts of codeswitching behavior intersect and complement one another. We argue that the common insight of these 2 distinct approaches is their focus on conventionalized linguistic norms at the level of the speech community. The second portion of the article sheds light on how various aspects of codeswitching experience give rise to adaptive change through bilingual phenotyping, highlighting the centrality of our mentor Judy Kroll's contributions to this research. Finally, we present a social network analysis of Judy's research publications and argue that the high degree of interconnectivity in Judy's research network, combined with the many positive community norms that she has been instrumental in establishing, have greatly benefited both the individual members of the network and the research enterprise itself.

When Jugglers Learn to Tango: Switching Between Languages and Disciplines

Abstract I consider 2 interlinked connections between Judy Kroll's research and my own work. Both concern the nature of language control in speakers of more than 1 language. My first connection is with her pioneering revised hierarchical model (Kroll &amp; Stewart, 1994). This model raised questions about the organization of the bilingual lexicon, the pathways to word production, and the nature of changes with language proficiency in a second language. For me, the model raised questions about the nature of the language control processes involved. My second connection is to Judy Kroll's advocacy of the importance of identifying and researching the consequences of variety in the language experience of bilinguals. My work aims to unpack the language control processes that support such variety. Importantly, as Judy Kroll has recently advocated, it is vital to place the lived experience of bilinguals center-stage in our research inquiries. This shift requires an increase in multidisciplinary collaboration and epitomizes her continued research leadership.

On Language Control in Bilingual Speakers

Abstract Historically, research in the field of bilingualism assumed a model in which the native or first acquired language (L1) was assumed to be impervious to change or interference from subsequently learned languages. More recently, the field has come to accept that the L1 not only interacts with other learned languages but may also change during acquisition of those linguistic newcomers. Such change would reflect a process that relies on open and adaptive language representation and control and where, as learners develop into fully fledged proficient bilinguals, they must additionally learn to navigate cross-language interaction and competition depending on the linguistic context in which they are immersed and their own communicative goals. In this article we review work that addresses these 2 aspects of language learning. We ask how speakers at different stages of new language use successfully adapt language control mechanisms to suit their current stage in the language learning developmental trajectory. Collectively, we refer to this adaptive language control mechanism as bilingual language regulation. The phrase is meant to highlight the ability to shift activation states, especially of the dominant language or L1, to suit the cognitive demands of current linguistic goals. We attempt to bridge the gap between two literatures—one on language learning and the other on proficient bilingualism—to explore how language regulation as a cognitive control skill can be acquired, how it may change over time, and how it may be used at the peak of language proficiency.

Unraveling the Multilingual Mind: Exploring Individual Differences in Bilingual Language Learning and Regulation

Abstract In this article we demonstrate how the groundbreaking feature of the revised hierarchical model, its recognition of links that grow and respond adaptively, are mirrored in how Judith F. Kroll spearheaded efforts to bring together scientists across disparate fields such as cognitive psychology, applied linguistics, and educational psychology. The article showcases a few studies that used basic cognitive psychology paradigms to address and inform applied questions pertaining to language learning and reading. The review includes a biographical backstory on how those interdisciplinary links were first established and how they have developed over time.
