Abstract Egg size is a particularly important life-history trait mediating maternal influences on offspring phenotype. Females can vary their egg-size investment in relation to environmental circumstances, their own breeding condition, and the quality of their mate. Here we analyzed inter- and intraclutch variation in egg size in the Collared Flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis) on the basis of eight years of data. According to our results, mean egg size increased with female condition, but did not differ among young, middle-aged, and old females. The male’s age, body size, and forehead patch size did not influence egg size; thus, we found no evidence for differential investment in egg size in relation to male quality. We found no effect of laying date on egg size when controlling for ambient temperature during the egg formation period, yet temperature had a significant effect on egg size. That result indicates proximate constraints on egg formation. Furthermore, we report on annual differences in intraclutch egg-size variation. Egg size increased within clutches in years with a warm prelaying period; whereas in years when the weather during that period was cold, there was no significant intraclutch trend. Proximate considerations seem to explain the observed patterns of intraclutch egg-size variation; however, we cannot reject the adaptive explanation. Mean egg size and intraclutch egg-size variation were unrelated to clutch size. Therefore, we found no evidence for a trade-off between size and number of eggs within a clutch.

Effects of Environmental Conditions and Parental Quality on Inter- and Intraclutch Egg-Size Variation in the Collared Flycatcher (Ficedula Albicollis)

Clutch size commonly decreases with increasing elevation among temperate-zone and subtropical songbird species. Tropical songbirds typically lay small clutches, thus the ability to evolve even smaller clutch sizes at higher elevations is unclear and untested. We conducted a comparative phylogenetic analysis using data gathered from the literature to test whether clutch size varied with elevation among forest passerines from three tropical biogeographic regions—the Venezuelan Andes and adjacent lowlands, Malaysian Borneo, and New Guinea. We found a significant negative effect of elevation on variation in clutch size among species. We found the same pattern using field data sampled across elevational gradients in Venezuela and Malaysian Borneo. Field data were not available for New Guinea. Both sets of results demonstrate that tropical montane species across disparate biogeographic realms lay smaller clutches than closely related low-elevation species. The environmental sources of selection underlying this pattern remain uncertain and merit further investigation.

The study of habitat use and selection in birds has a long tradition (Grinnell 1917, Kendeigh 1945, Svardson 1949, Hild6n 1965; Block and Brennan 1993). Early habitat-selection theory was characterized by correlative models of habitat characteristics and species abundance (MacArthur and Pianka 1966, Verner et al. 1986, Rosenzweig 1991), which subsequently evolved into models that involved density dependence: the ideal-free and ideal-despotic models (Fretwell and Lucas 1970, Fretwell 1972). More recently, habitat-selection studies have shown that many factors, such as landscape structure, can influence exactly how ideal and free animals are while moving through a landscape and selecting habitats (Karr and Freemark 1983, Pulliam and Danielson 1991, Petit and Petit 1996). Habitat-selection studies have recently assumed a new urgency, partially as a result of the importance of incorporating both habitat and demographic information into conservation planning (Caughley 1994). Nevertheless, ornithologists tend to be inconsistent in their conceptual framework and terminology with regard to (1) what constitutes habitat use versus selection, (2) the behavioral and evolutionary context of their findings, and (3) the order or scale of their study, from microhabitat to geographic range (Johnson 1980, Orians and Wittenberger 1991). The purpose of this review is to address those concerns through a survey of recent literature and highlight areas where improvements or advances can be made in avian habitat ecology. Three Areas of Concern.-Definitions.-The semantic and empirical distinctions between the terms habitat use and habitat selection are often unclear (Hall et al. 1997). Habitat refers to a distinctive set of physical environmental factors that a species uses for its survival and reproduction (Block and Brennan 1993). Habitat use refers to the way in which an individual or species uses habitats to meet its life history needs (Block and Brennan 1993). Adaptive breeding-habitat selection: Is it for the birds?

Abstract Despite the role of many domestic animals as model organisms, our understanding of their undomesticated conspecifics is comparatively poor. This limits our ability to infer the eco-evolutionary context of phenomena studied in the laboratory and to explore domestication. The domestic pigeon’s wild form is the Rock Dove (Columba livia). By studying 5 global positioning system–tagged wild Rock Doves in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, we present the first individual-level assessment of undomesticated Rock Dove movements, revealing extensive use of anthropogenic habitats in both a roosting and foraging context. This association with humans provides tantalizing opportunities for research into the pre-domestication human–pigeon relationship. More generally, this work highlights the value of researching laboratory model species in nature.

Abstract Avian haemosporidia are blood parasites that can have dramatic fitness consequences on their hosts, including largescale population declines when introduced to naïve hosts. Yet the physiological effects that accompany haemosporidian infection and underlie these fitness decrements are poorly characterized in most wild birds. Because haemosporidia destroy host red blood cells and consume host hemoglobin, they are predicted to have detrimental impacts on avian blood-oxygen transport and, as a result, reduce aerobic performance. However, the documented effects of infection on avian hematological traits vary across species and no effects have been demonstrated on avian aerobic performance to date. Here we quantified the physiological effects of haemosporidian infections on wild Junco hyemalis (Dark-eyed Junco) breeding in northwestern Wyoming, USA. We assayed hematological traits (hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit) and aerobic performance (resting and summit metabolic rates, thermogenic endurance, and aerobic scope), then screened individuals for haemosporidian infection by quantitative PCR post-hoc (n = 110 adult juncos). We found that infection status and infection intensity did not significantly correlate with any of the physiological indices that we measured, suggesting there is little cost of haemosporidian infection on either junco aerobic performance or energy budgets. The fact that our results contradict predicted outcomes highlights the need for more studies of haemosporidia infections in a broader range of species and in a wider array of environmental contexts.

Abstract Aerial insectivore (AI) populations have been in steep decline in North America since the 1970s, with swallows, swifts, and nightjars declining more rapidly than flycatchers. As AI share a common diet of flying insects, reductions in insect abundance are likely one of the major factors driving population decline. Previous studies have shown major dietary differences between swallows and flycatchers; flycatchers have exhibited more diverse, generalist diets than swallows. However, no study has directly compared the diets of sympatric swallows and flycatchers using the same method of dietary analysis. To investigate these differences, we compared the diets of six AI species living in sympatry during the breeding season. We collected fecal samples from adult Riparia riparia (Bank Swallow), Hirundo rustica (Barn Swallow), Petrochelidon pyrrhonota (Cliff Swallow), Tachycineta bicolor (Tree Swallow), Empidonax alnorum (Alder Flycatcher), and E. minimus (Least Flycatcher). We used DNA metabarcoding to identify the taxonomic composition of invertebrates in the feces and compared the richness of genera by insect order, insect family, and dipteran family between all species. Through a Bray-Curtis distance-based redundancy analysis, we identified significant differences in dietary composition between bird species at all three levels; however, the greatest amount of dissimilarity is seen in the dipterans consumed. Empidonax alnorum, E. minimus, H. rustica, and T. bicolor had broader, more generalist diets than P. pyrrhonota and R. riparia. By comparing the diets between multiple species living in sympatry, our study improves our understanding of a possible cause of disproportionate population declines observed among AI species.

Abstract The adaptive significance of group-living has promoted considerable debate about the potential role of environmental drivers in the evolution of coloniality. Nest aggregations may result as a plastic response of reproductive individuals to limited substrate availability and favorable environmental conditions for nesting (limited substrate availability hypothesis). However, few studies have demonstrated the direct role of environmental factors in promoting social aggregations. A population survey of Oreotrochilus chimborazo chimborazo (Chimborazo Hillstar), a hummingbird subspecies endemic to the Ecuadorian High Andes, resulted in the identification of 7 nesting aggregations and 13 solitary nests. Of a total of 74 active nests detected, most (82%) were found in reproductive colonies. Furthermore, nesting aggregations were consistently associated year-round with roosting groups of males and non-reproductive females, a unique case among birds. These findings challenge the widespread assumption that hummingbirds are highly competitive solitary nesters. The subsequent characterization of O. c. chimborazo nesting habitat revealed that wind speed, temperature, humidity, and landscape features associated with substrate availability, ground cover vegetation, and water represent environmental factors associated with nesting, consistent with the limited substrate availability hypothesis. However, a semi-natural “experiment” comparing occupancy of solitary nesting locations vs. nesting aggregations revealed that only 45.5% of the sites available for solitary nesting showed individual active nests, significantly lower than the 95% expected by random simulations. In contrast, nesting aggregations consistently had multiple active nests at significantly higher frequencies than expected, producing broods across multiple reproductive seasons. These results suggest that other factors beyond those associated with the limited substrate availability hypothesis may play a role in the development of nesting/roosting aggregations in the O. c. chimborazo, emphasizing the importance of the interaction of environmental and social factors in driving coloniality in birds.
