CIRP Annals

Inspired by the natural intelligence of humans and bio-evolution, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has seen accelerated growth since the beginning of the 21st century. Successful AI applications have been broadly reported, with Industry 4.0 providing a thematic platform for AI-related research and development in manufacturing. This paper highlights applications of AI in manufacturing, ranging from production system design and planning to process modeling, optimization, quality assurance, maintenance, automated assembly and disassembly. In addition, the paper presents an overview of representative manufacturing problems and matching AI solutions, and a perspective of future research to leverage AI towards the realization of smart manufacturing.

Artificial Intelligence in manufacturing: State of the art, perspectives, and future directions

Optimisation of factories, a cornerstone of production engineering for the past half century, relies on formulating the challenges with limited degrees of freedom. In this paper, technological advances are reviewed to propose a "daydreaming" framework for factories that use their cognitive capacity for looking into the future or "foresighting". Assessing and learning from the possible eventualities enable breakthroughs with many degrees of freedom and make daydreaming factories antifragile. In these factories with augmented and reciprocal learning and foresighting processes, revolutionary reactions to external and internal stimuli are unnecessary and industrial co-evolution of people, processes and products will replace industrial revolutions.

Daydreaming factories

An investigation is made into the effects of liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2) cooling, minimum-quantity lubrication (MQL) and cutting speed in drilling. Experimental measurements of torque, thrust force and temperature are made over a wide range of process and operating conditions. The resulting empirical models are used to quantify the individual contributions of the controlled parameters on drilling performance, and to facilitate temperature-based process optimization. Of particular interest is the need to carefully adjust the LCO2 flow rate for any combination of MQL flow rate and cutting speed. The optimization is validated both in simulation and actual drilling tests.

The effects of liquid-CO2 cooling, MQL and cutting parameters on drilling performance

Abstract This paper presents an overview of the recent advances in high performance cutting of aerospace alloys and composite currently used in aeroengine and aerostructure applications. Progress in cutting tool development and its effect on tool wear and surface integrity characteristics of difficult to machine materials such as nickel based alloys, titanium and composites is presented. Further, advances in cutting technologies are discussed, focusing on the role of hybrid machining processes and cooling strategies (MQL, high pressure coolant, cryogenic) on machining performance. Finally, industrial perspectives are provided in the context of machining specific components where future challenges are discussed.

While additive manufacturing (AM) provides design flexibility, challenges persist in handling intricate freeform shapes, especially those laden with fine details. Conventional AM processes, such as slicing stereolithography (STL) format models, generating line segment toolpaths, and polyline-based printing, prove costly and compromise accuracy. This paper proposes a solution: the spline scanning generative design method. Utilizing spline patterns to construct smooth toolpaths directly, it enables seamless curved printing, significantly reducing computational expenses while maintaining high accuracy through spline control points. Experimental implementation, supported by dedicated algorithms, attests to its efficacy, emphasizing its potential for intricate freeform structure design and printing.

Thermoplastic fibre metal laminates (FMLs) increasingly attract attention in manufacturing parts that must present high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios. In addition, their polymer matrix's recyclability meets sustainability needs that conventional thermosetting-based FMLs cannot encounter. Mechanical drilling is one of the most used manufacturing operations they are subjected to, but it can still be a source of damage in the drilled zone, which, in turn, can impair the part service performance. In particular, the interface conditions between the metal skins and composite core significantly determine the drilling performance. In this framework, the paper investigates how the metal sheet surface modification treatments and composite polymer matrix characteristics can affect the drilling operation performance. It has been proved that rough metal surfaces and a polymer matrix with enhanced thermal resistance are the best combinations to ensure the integrity and quality of drilled holes.

On the role of metal surface modification and polymer matrix characteristics when drilling thermoplastic fibre metal laminates

An investigation is made into traverse diamond dressing of grinding wheels using radiused dressers. Previous methods have modeled dressing using an equivalent diamond-contact width. This method contains inherent problems, particularly with overlap ratio and dressing depth. In this study, the geometry is modeled as a series of scallops. Dressing sharpness is quantified using the concept of Aggressiveness, which unifies numerous disparate parameters into a single dimensionless parameter. Experiments show that this single parameter accurately quantifies dressing sharpness for radiused, rotary, traverse-disc dressing. Also, the concepts of minimum achievable specific energy and the transient nature of wheel sharpness are investigated.
