Since its inception in 1957, the Canadian Journal of Animal Science has published new research covering various aspects of livestock and animal products. This includes studies on breeding and genetics, cellular and molecular biology, growth and development, meat science, simulation of animal systems, physiology and endocrinology, nutrition of ruminants and non-ruminants, as well as welfare, behavior, and management. The journal also features commentaries, letters to the editor, abstracts of technical papers presented at the Canadian Society of Animal Science annual meetings, and occasionally publishes conference proceedings.

The study was conducted the effects of dietary γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA, 0 and 30 mg kg −1 ) on average daily intake, growth performance, behavior and plasma hormone levels in weaned pigs. A total of 96 28-d-old healthy weaned male pigs (Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire) with similar weight were randomly assigned into two groups. Six units were included in each treatment, with eight pigs in each unit. The trial lasted 35 d. Four pigs were exchanged between every two pens in the same treatment on day 28. No difference was observed on average daily feed intake, average daily gain and feed-to-gain ratio between the pigs fed 30 mg kg −1 GABA diets and the pigs fed basal diet, respectively. Longer feed consumption time and lower biting incidences were observed in pigs fed GABA, compared with those fed basal diet, respectively. Plasma growth hormone concentration was significantly increased and the plasma concentrations of adrenocorticotrophic hormone and cortisol were lower in weaned pigs in the GABA supplementation group on day 35. Dietary GABA significantly increased the plasma neuropeptide Y concentration on day 14 and day 35. It is indicated that dietary GABA reduced aggressive behavior and regulated endocrine hormones in weaned pigs, ultimately reducing the negative influences of stress (weaning and mixing) on the pigs.

Sci. 94: 223–241. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a long history of clinical practice, and its own theoretical framework focused on functions at the whole-body level. However, due to cultural differences, TCM has not been fully recognized in Western countries. With the recent development of the theory of whole-body systems biology and “-omics”, there is a new opportunity to study TCM and to close the gap between TCM and Western medicine, because of the similarity in the theoretical foundations between TCM and whole-body systems biology. The uniqueness of TCM theory and practice is the approach to maintain and restore the body balance as a whole with no or little unfavourable side effects. Recent studies have also shown that Chinese herbs used as feed additives can modulate nutritional metabolism, immune responses, and intestinal health of food-producing animals, demonstrating good potential as substitutes for dietary antibiotics. Nonetheless, some issues need to be addressed before Chinese herbs can reach their full application. This article has critically reviewed recent progresses in scientific research of Chinese herbs as feed additives and their potential to replace dietary antibiotics. Possible challenges in future application for swine and poultry production are also discussed.

The current interest in hemp is not limited to the medicinal use for humans, it is also gaining attention as a valuable feed ingredient for animals. For instance, the processing of whole hemp seed (HS) for the extraction of the oil can result in various feed materials for animals, including HS hulls, dehulled HS, HS oil, and HS cake/meal. However, currently, HS-derived products are not approved as feed ingredients in Canada, in part, because the safety and efficacy of these derivatives, like other jurisdictions, require certification by regulatory bodies for their use in animal feeds. In this context, this document reviews previous studies testing the application of hemp-derived products in various animal feeds, including poultry, swine, ruminants, as well as in aquaculture production to support their safety and efficacy. Furthermore, the document attempts to review available data on the transfer of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC; the psychoactive component) into animal products. Hence, the aim of this work is to support future policy directions and guidelines for the application of various hemp-derived products in animal feeds.

Safety and Efficacy of Hemp-Derived Products in Animal Feeds – A Narrative Review

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the mulberry [Morus alba var. multicaulis (Perrott.) Loud.] leaf powder (MLP) supplementation in dietary concentrates on growth performance, blood metabolites, meat quality, and antioxidant enzyme (AOE) gene expression in fattening Hu lambs. Forty approximately 3-mo-old Hu lambs (16.5 ± 0.6 kg) were randomly allocated to five groups and fed with concentrates containing 0%, 15%, 30%, 45%, or 60% MLP (control, T15, T30, T45, and T60, respectively). The results showed that 15%–30% MLP supplementation maintained growth and carcass performance, and the weight of total stomach, especially of rumen in T15 and T30, were higher than those of the control. Dietary MLP supplementation decreased serum aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, but increased the high-density lipoprotein levels. Moreover, MLP supplementation improved the longissimus lumborum muscle color (redness), tenderness, and water-holding capacity. It was further observed that 15% MLP supplementation enhanced all AOE mRNA levels apart from that of EPHX1. In summary, dietary MLP supplementation could partially improve the blood metabolites, meat quality, and AOE mRNA levels in the liver of fattening Hu lamb, and the level of 15% supplementation was the most promising.

Effects of dietary mulberry leaf powder on growth performance, blood metabolites, meat quality, and antioxidant enzyme-related gene expression of fattening Hu lambs

Image analysis of ventral, anterior, and posterior ends of 550 pork loins was used to classify extreme-coloured centre chops. Only the ventral side was strongly correlated ( r = 0.79) to the centre chop. Thresholds at 2.5th, 5th, and 7.5th percentiles of ventral surface pale pork were selected to classify centre chop pale pork (5th percentile). Increasing stringency increased accuracy in excluding pale samples. At the 7.5th percentile, prediction accuracy of pale (85.7%) and non-pale samples (89.5%) was balanced. This method can be adopted by commercial pork processors as a classification or pre-sorting approach.

Calcium (Ca) most significantly influences the bioavailability of plant-derived phosphorus due to its formation of phytate-Ca chelates. A study was designed to examine the interactive effects of graded total Ca-to-total P ratios (Ca:P) and phytase on the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of P and bone characteristics in diets formulated with soybean meal as the sole source of P. Male broiler chickens were fed 6 semi-purified diets prepared in a 2 × 3 factorial treatment arrangement with 2 levels of phytase (0 or 1,000 FYT/kg of diet) and 3 levels of Ca:P (1.1, 2.0, or 2.8) for 72 hours from d 18 to 21 post hatching. Birds were assigned to the experimental diets in a randomized complete block design with 8 replicate cages per treatment. Increasing the Ca:P linearly decreased (P &lt; 0.05) the SID of P from 54 to 40%, whereas the supplementation of phytase improved the SID of P from 26 to 67%. The supplementation of phytase increased (P &lt; 0.05) the bone-breaking strength, whereas tibia ash was decreased (P &lt; 0.05). The results demonstrate that the adverse effect of increasing Ca:P on P utilization in a soybean meal-based diet is consistent with or without phytase supplementation.

Dietary fibre (DF) may modulate the intestinal health of pigs depending on the content of DF fraction (DFF). Two hundred mixed-sex pigs (7.56 ± 0.86 kg) were randomly assigned to 1 of 5 dietary treatments in four blocks. Diets comprised a basal diet (BD), or BD supplemented with 2% DFF to provide soluble DF and insoluble DF, from inulin and lignocellulose, respectively, in ratios of 1:1 (DFF1), 1:3 (DFF2), 1:5 (DFF3), and 1:7 (DFF4) for 28-d. Compared with BD, plasma interleukin-6 was reduced in DFF1 by 20.1%, while plasma interleukin-1β was reduced in DFF2, DFF3, and DFF4 by average 20% (P &lt; 0.05). Superoxide dismutase was lowest in DFF1 or DFF2 and highest in DFF3 (P &lt; 0.05). Decreasing SDF:IDF quadratically increased plasma urea nitrogen (P &lt; 0.05) and tended to decrease plasma myeloperoxidase (P &lt; 0.10). Hindgut ammonia-nitrogen and biogenic amine concentrations were reduced in DFF diets compared to BD (P &lt; 0.01). Overall, DFF reduced FCS compared to BD (P &lt; 0.001). Decreasing SDF:IDF quadratically reduced FCS (P &lt; 0.05). The results indicate that 2% DFF supplementation, regardless of the SDF:IDF, modulated pro-inflammatory cytokines, hindgut fermentation metabolites, and FCS in nursery pigs.

Displaced abomasum (DA) is an important digestive condition that adversely affects the economic performance and the productive lifespan of a dairy cow. Due to increasing DA incidence in recent years, the present research was performed to estimate the potential effects of DA on the performance of Iranian Holstein. Production data were analyzed using a linear mixed model. Cox proportional hazard regression was used to assess the associations of DA occurrence with the time from calving to first service, pregnancy (in 120 and 220 DIM, respectively) and culling. The least-square means showed that DA was significantly ( P &lt; 0.0001) associated with reduced milk, fat, and protein yields, especially during peak milk production. Results of survival analyzes showed that DA could be associated with reduced probability pregnancy in the first service at 120 DIM (hazard ratio = 0.57; 95% CI = 0.51–0.64), and at 220 DIM (hazard ratio = 0.81; 95% CI = 0.76–0.86) and with an increased hazard of culling in the same lactation (hazard ratio = 3.85; 95% CI = 3.13–4.74). Considering negative effects of DA in dairy cows, it can be concluded, quantitative knowledge of the consequences of DA may convince dairy farmers to apply preventive strategies to reduce the incidence of DA in the herd.

Effect of displaced abomasum on milk production, reproductive performance, and culling of Holstein dairy cattle in Iran

This study investigated the effects of melatonin implants in pregnancy on milk production and composition, and the quality of colostrum in dairy goats. Thirty days before kidding, 92 goats (group MEL) received one melatonin implant, and the remaining 177 goats (group CON) did not. Three monthly milk evaluations included milk yield (MY, kg/d), composition (%Fat, %Protein, % Lactose), daily yield (Fat, g/d Protein, g/d Lactose). A sample of colostrum was obtained from 165 goats, from which its composition, IgG concentration were measured. MEL had a significantly (P&lt;0.01) higher MY in the second month (3.16 ± 0.10 kg/d) than CON (2.78 ± 0.07 kg/d). In the three milk samplings, fat concentrations were significantly higher (P&lt;0.05) in the MEL than in the CON does. In the second milk sampling, does that had received a melatonin implant produced higher (P&lt;0.05) daily milk yield components than did non-implanted (Fat: 144 ± 6.0 vs 115 ± 3.4; Protein: 104 ± 3.4 vs 91 ± 2.5; Lactose: 148 ± 5.8 vs 131 ± 4.3 g/d). In conclusion, melatonin implants administered 30 d before kidding increased milk production, the amounts of milk daily components in the second month of lactation, and the concentration of fat milk.

Antimicrobial use and misuse in the agricultural sector are driving causes of the ongoing antimicrobial resistance public health crisis. To enact meaningful on-farm stewardship and best-practice discussions, we need more research that provides in-depth understandings of producers' beliefs, values, practices, and challenges surrounding the use of antimicrobials. Through a discussion of the experiences of twelve cow-calf operators in Ontario, we demonstrate how qualitative research methods can be mobilized to gain insights into the priorities and concerns that shape farmers’ use of antimicrobials, as well as barriers to their effective use.
