Le cronache di viaggio di Matilde Serao ( Lettere d’una viaggiatrice, Nel paese di Gesù. Ricordi di un viaggio in Palestina, Nuove lettere di una viaggiatrice) forse non molto attenzionate dalla critica, sono, invece, interessanti per una comprensione a tutto tondo dell’autrice partenopea e delle possibilità offerte dalla scrittura di viaggio. Gusto mondano, studio del rapporto fra uomini e spazio, indagine psicologica, impegno sociale, desiderio di evasione, di abbattere gli stereotipi si susseguono in una prosa originalissima, in cui il gusto figurativo coesiste con l’impasto linguistico e in cui si mescolano le caratteristiche di vari generi letterari: narrativa, saggistica, cronaca. Distinguendo, allo stesso tempo, vari tipi di viaggiatori, Matilde Serao traccia una nuova interpretazione degli scopi e dei principali aspetti del viaggio, inteso, quindi, come arricchimento, come riscoperta di una identità personale e di gruppo, fra “cittadini di una stessa patria ideale”, ma anche come strumento di indagine sociale e di conoscenza interiore. Se, da un lato, lo scientismo positivistico è ormai superato, dall’altro si raggiungono posizioni decadentistiche, anche attraverso una rielaborazione del tema del sogno, già oggetto di una ricca tradizione letteraria. Si impone, così, una nuova considerazione dell’attività della scrittrice napoletana, spesso giudicata dalla critica in modo contrastante.

Book Review: The Struggle for Life and the Modern Italian Novel, 1859–1925 by Andrea Sartori

This paper examines the representation of the Sicilian natural environment in Tomasi di Lampedusa’s Il Gattopardo. I first highlight the anti-anthropocentric stance that emerges from the novel. Next, I explore the ambivalent relationship between Sicilian nature and the class conflict between aristocracy and bourgeoisie central to the narrative, also emphasizing the influence of Leopardi’s late works, particularly La ginestra. On the one hand, through the contemplation of the natural environment, the protagonist, Fabrizio, manages to ‘zoom out’ from contemporary historical events, gaining a perspective that diminishes social conflicts by comparing human insignificance to the eternity and magnificence of nature. On the other hand, nature in the novel shares key characteristics with aristocracy, creating a striking affinity between the two. Consequently, nature becomes entangled in the same class conflict it seemed to transcend. By aligning itself with the aristocracy, nature serves as a tool for the resentment of a historically defeated class, with the bourgeoisie's modernizing mission in Sicily ultimately undermined by the inherent qualities of the Sicilian landscape.

L’aspetto vero della Sicilia: Nature and aristocracy in Tomasi di Lampedusa's Il Gattopardo

Compared to the scholarly attention dedicated to mid-20th-century Germanic or French transatlantic intellectual migration and its impact on thought and culture in the USA, the influence of Italian exiles and refugees has been relatively neglected. In the political context, only a few Italian exiles with public or institutional roles in the USA have been studied (e.g. Ascoli, Salvemini, Borgese), while the contributions of others remain overlooked. This article addresses two such neglected figures: Paolo Milano and Nicola Chiaromonte. It highlights how the politics of friendship they brought to 1940s New York, premised in utopian socialism, constituted a vehicle for transatlantic exchange. Though Milano and Chiaromonte did not have strong institutional affiliations during this period, their connections to US literary and radical circles helped circulate an account of Italy and an interpretation of Italian antifascist resistance strongly informed by their vision of friendship.
