The IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques focuses on the engineering and theoretical aspects related to microwave and millimeter-wave components, devices, circuits, and systems. Conductivity Measurement Technique for Interface and Surface Using Dielectric Rod Resonator Based on Calibration

Magnetic properties were imparted to a naturally nonmagnetic material by metallic inclusions. A patch antenna tested the performance of the magnetic metamaterial as a substrate and validated that a single substrate can achieve a range of miniaturization values. The effective medium metamaterial substrate employed electromagnetically small embedded circuits (ECs) to achieve permeability and permittivity greater than that of the host dielectric. Geometric control of the ECs allowed mu and epsi to be tailored to the application. The magnetic metamaterial exhibited enhanced mu and epsi with acceptable loss-factor levels. Models for predicting mu and epsi are presented, the benefits of employing metamaterial substrates are discussed, and the results in this antenna experiment are presented. The metamaterial exhibits performance characteristics not achievable from natural materials. Of particular significance is that with the permeability varying strongly and predictably with frequency, the miniaturization factor may be selected by tuning the operating frequency. Simulations indicate that such performance can be extended to several gigahertz with current technology. Relative permeability values in the mu <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">r</sub> =1-5 range are achievable for moderately low-loss applications. Representative antenna miniaturization factors on the order of 4-7 over a moderate (approximately 10%) transmission bandwidth and efficiencies in a moderate range (20%-35%) are demonstrated with the possibility of higher efficiencies indicated

A substrate for small patch antennas providing tunable miniaturization factors

This paper presents a new set of results concerning the use of higher/lower order modes as a means to implement bypass or cross coupling for applications in elliptic filter design. It is shown that the signs of the coupling coefficients to produce a transmission zero (TZ) either below or above the passband are, in certain situations, reversed from the predictions of simpler existing models. In particular, the bypass coupling to higher/lower order modes must be significantly stronger than the coupling to the main resonance in order to generate TZs in the immediate vicinity of the passband. Planar (H-plane) singlets are used to illustrate the derived results. This study should provide very important guidelines in selecting the proper main and bypass couplings for sophisticated filtering structures. Example filters are designed, built, and measured to demonstrate the validity of the introduced theory.

Characteristics of cross (bypass) coupling through higher/lower order modes and their applications in elliptic filter design

A rigorous yet computationally efficient 3-D numerical method has been proposed based on modified alternatingdirection-implicit finite-difference time-domain (ADI FDTD) methods. It has the capability of modeling the anisotropic and dispersive properties of magnetic material. The proposed algorithm solves Maxwell's equations and Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation jointly and simultaneously, requiring only tridiagonal matrix inversion as in ADI FDTD. The accuracy of the modeling has been validated by: 1) the nonreciprocity of an X-band ferrite resonance isolator; 2) the attenuation constant of a magnetically tunable waveguide filter; and 3) the dispersive permeability of a 2-μm-thick magnetic thin film. Time steps that are up to 5000 times larger than the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy limit have been used in these simulations without encountering stability issues. The simulation results agree with the predictions made from the theory, the commercial software or the experiments. Moreover, the algorithm has been applied to predict the effect of high permeability thin films in platform effect reduction. An electric current sheet close to a perfect electrically conducting plane coated with a 2-μm-thick magnetic thin film is simulated, which exhibits an enhanced surface resistance by three orders of magnitude higher than that without the magnetic thin film.

A Multiscale Unconditionally Stable Time-Domain (MUST) Solver Unifying Electrodynamics and Micromagnetics

Personal devices such as smartphones and tablets are rapidly becoming personal communication, information, and control centers. Apart from multitouch screens, human gestures are considered as a new interactive human-smart device interface. In this work, we propose a noncontact solution to implement hand gesture recognitions for smart devices. It is based on a continuous wave, time-division-multiplexing (TDM), single-input multiple-output (SIMO) Doppler radar sensor that can be realized by slightly modifying existing RF front ends of smart devices, and a machine-learning algorithm to recognize predefined gestures by classifying deterministic Doppler signals. An experimental setup emulating a smartphone-based radar sensor was implemented, and the experimental results verified the robustness and the accuracy of the proposed approach.

This Mini-Special Issue of the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques (TMTT) contains four expanded papers from the 2023 International Workshop on Integrated Nonlinear Microwave and Millimetre- Wave Circuits (INMMiC), which was held in Aveiro, Portugal, from November 8 to 10, 2023. The INMMiC is a forum for promoting, discussing, and spreading ideas in the field of nonlinear microwave and millimeter-wave circuits and systems. The INMMiC Workshop was originally launched in Duisburg, Germany, in 1990, and achieved its present form in Rome, Italy, in 2004, after a dormant period of several years. Subsequently, the INMMiC was held at different venues around Europe, namely: in 2006 in Aveiro, Portugal; 2008 in Málaga, Spain; 2010 in Gothenburg, Sweden; 2011 in Vienna, Austria; 2012 in Dublin, Ireland; 2014 in Leuven, Belgium; 2015 in Taormina, Italy; 2017 in Graz, Austria; 2018 in Brive-La-Gaillarde, France; and in 2022 in Cardiff, the U.K.

With the rapid development of wireless technologies, the simultaneous and flexible control of amplitude and phase characteristics of the signals is highly demanded. However, none of the existing power dividers (PDs) can simultaneously achieve this tunability in a single circuit. In this article, a PD with simultaneously tunable power division ratio (PDR) and phase difference is presented for the first time. The proposed PD consists of two highly flexible arms, a matching network, and an isolation network. The arm is constructed by loading three varactor diodes on a quarter-wavelength 3-dB coupled line. A theoretical analysis is conducted to show that the input impedance and phase delay of this arm can be flexibly controlled by the capacitance of the varactor diodes. Subsequently, the PDR and phase difference between the two output ports can be tuned independently, maintaining good return loss and isolation. For demonstration purposes, a highly flexible PD operating at 2.4 GHz is designed, fabricated, and measured. A wide PDR range from <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$-$</tex-math> </inline-formula> 20 to 20 dB and a wide phase difference range from <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$-$</tex-math> </inline-formula> 180 <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$^{\circ}$</tex-math> </inline-formula> to 180 <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$^{\circ}$</tex-math> </inline-formula> are observed, with better than 10 dB return loss and 15 dB isolation.
