Linguistica (Slovenia)

Nel presente contributo si illustrano gli esiti di una ricerca avente per oggetto il linguaggio giuridico sloveno e il linguaggio giuridico italiano. In primis, si è proceduto allo studio di numerose fonti, da cui sono emerse le origini, l’evoluzione avvenuta nel corso dei secoli e l’influenza di altre lingue sui due linguaggi giuridici in esame. In riferimento a quest’ultimo punto, si pensi all’influsso del francese in seguito all’entrata in vigore del Code Napoleon nel 1804, del tedesco per effetto della dottrina pandettistica verso la fine dell’Ottocento e dell’inglese dall’inizio del Novecento in poi.&#x0D; Successivamente si è passati allo studio delle principali specialità lessicali e terminologiche dei linguaggi giuridici in generale e del linguaggio giuridico sloveno e italiano in particolare, rilevando talune analogie e differenze particolarmente significative. Per esemplificare, in ambito lessicale si pensi alla marcata presenza della polisemia (per esempio il termine italiano azione può corrispondere in sloveno a tožba, storitev o delnica).&#x0D; Segue una breve indagine a livello terminologico volta a individuare origine, evoluzione e influenza di altre lingue e di altri sistemi giuridici sulla scelta di determinati termini giuridici, che potremmo definire equivalenti funzionali, presenti rispettivamente nella Costituzione italiana e in quella slovena. Ne emergono elementi alquanto significativi che richiedono naturalmente ulteriori estensioni e approfondimenti.

Rafael Orozco, profesor de lingüística española en la Universidad Estatal de Louisiana, EE.UU., es autor de este interesante volumen dedicado al estudio de las variables sociolingüísticas del español hablado en Colombia y en las comunidades colombianas en el extranjero. El estudio se centra en la variante costeña hablada en la ciudad de Barranquilla y la variante colombiana hablada en la ciudad de Nueva York. Este análisis comparativo hace parte de una investigación sociolingüística más amplia sobre el español de Colombia en los EE.UU. y se publica con motivo de los 100 años de la fundación del primer enclave colombiano en la ciudad de Nueva York.

Na stanje razumevanja in razumljivosti na Slovenskem in obenem tudi ustreznosti zahtev izključevanja ali omejevanja katerekoli ravni norme ali oblike, varietete med drugim kažejo tudi rezultati pismenosti, ali posplošeno, sporazumevalne zmožnosti osnovnošolskih otrok. Rezultati Nacionalnega preverjanja znanja kažejo, da se iz leta v leto stopnjujejo težave pri samostojnem tvorjenju jezikovno pravilnih zaokroženih besedil katerekoli vrste, prav tako pri povzemanju teme, sklepanju o posledicah; posebej izstopajoče je, da precej učencev po 9-letnem šolanju ne dosega niti minimalnih standardov pri rabi lastnega jezika. Kot navajajo poročila (Statistični podatki NPZ), imajo učenci, kadar morajo v izhodiščnih besedilih poiskati ustrezne podatke in jih uporabiti v besedilu, ki ga sami tvorijo, precej težav, čeprav gre tudi pri teh nalogah za naloge, ki po učnem načrtu preverjajo minimalne standarde. Še več težav imajo učenci pri uporabi, ki zahteva tudi analizo in sintezo. To se še posebej izrazito kaže pri samostojnem tvorjenju zaokroženih besedil (in sicer ob besedilu katerekoli zvrsti oz. vrste), in to kljub temu da gre za vodeno pisanje z razmeroma natančnimi navodili glede vsebine, in kljub dejstvu, da imajo učenci s podobnimi besedili (kot je npr. interpretacija grafa) opraviti tudi pri drugih predmetih. Posebno pozornost velja nameniti tudi jezikovni pravilnosti oz. ustreznosti tvorjenih besedil. Čeprav gre za minimalne standarde, učenci z najnižjimi dosežki pri tej točkovani enoti dosegajo komaj kako točko.

Nella produzione dei testi di corrispondenza italiana i comunicatori sloveni provenienti dal mondo del lavoro spesso affrontano con insicurezza la verbalizzazione dei complessi rapporti aspettuali, temporali e modali previsti dal sistema verbale italiano. Tali insicurezze sono evidenti sia nei testi redatti dai parlanti con un’elevata competenza linguistico-comunicativa sia in quelli composti da comunicatori che possiedono un repertorio linguistico più limitato. Questi ultimi sono anche più propensi a comporre messaggi molto sintetici, con una gamma piuttosto ristretta di paradigmi verbali anche nelle situazioni in cui le esigenze e gli scopi comunicativi richiederebbero la redazione di un testo più esteso.&#x0D; Visti i disagi dei non madrelingua, ci si è chiesti quanto spazio dedicano vari libri di testo per l’italiano per gli affari alle attività il cui obiettivo è lo sviluppo della competenza relativa alla conoscenza e all’uso dei paradigmi verbali nell’ambito della corrispondenza commerciale. La ricerca dimostra che – in dipendenza da vari parametri quali il livello QCER dei singoli libri di testo, il loro orientamento più o meno comunicativo, l’importanza ascritta alla corrispondenza commerciale ecc. – possiamo constatare notevoli differenze tra i materiali analizzati in quanto alla presenza delle attività e ai paradigmi verbali trattati in esse. Un numero maggiore di attività e una loro distribuzione proporzionata nella prassi glottodidattica potrebbe sensibilizzare gli utenti/apprendenti a un’attenzione più focalizzata e accurata nel riconoscere l’insieme degli elementi che stimolano l’uso di singoli paradigmi verbali nei testi di corrispondenza commerciale. L’obiettivo di tale approccio ovvero sensibilizzazione è quello di giungere prima a una comprensione adeguata dei testi e dopo a una stesura dei messaggi pragmaticamente efficaci.

关于意大利语作为第二语言中动词范式的使用的一些观察：商务意大利语

16th-century Scots was a developing standard variety that was being elaborated to assume new communicative functions hitherto fulfilled by Latin and French – both languages with well-established discourse traditions. The elaboration of Scots happened by adopting these discursive practices into the vernacular, thus innovating new structures and patterns. This study, which focuses on the epistolary discourse tradition, aims to explore to what extent requestive patterns in 16th-century Scots letters were influenced by French pragmalinguistic models. A comparative analysis of French letters in the foreign correspondence of Mary of Lorraine with letters from her Scots correspondence shows that the French requestive models had a clear impact on the Scots requestive repertoire. It further indicates that the discursive practices did not remain static but evolved in the Scots context.

An Irish translation of the New Testament was published in Dublin in 1602. This publication, and the translation work which underlay it, did not appear in a vacuum: two earlier printed books in Irish had paved the way, viz. John Carswell’s translation of Knox’s Forme of Prayer and Ministrations of the Sacraments, published in Edinburgh in 1567, and Seaán Ó Cearnaigh’s primer of the Irish language and catechism translation, published in Dublin in 1571. This paper seeks to shed light on the process by which an appropriate register was arrived at for Protestant printing in Irish, and in particular for the New Testament, through an examination of some of the linguistic and stylistic features of these texts, with regard both to decisions made by the individual translators and to sociolinguistic factors which may have limited their room to manoeuvre. These factors include contemporary conceptions of and attitudes to different language varieties, the lack of alternative models, and the nature and level of education received by individual translators. This paper builds upon the pioneering research of Ailbhe Ó Corráin (2013) to show that linguistically that portion of the Irish New Testament completed after 1597 has a more colloquial and dialectal quality than that which preceded it. This is tentatively connected with specific changes in the team responsible.

Finding the ‘Right’ Irish for the New Testament

The aim of the present paper is to shed light on the cultural contact between the Italian and German vernacular debates in the 17th century, and to show how this cultural contact introduced new legitimising arguments in favour of the vernacular in the German-speaking context while also providing a renovating impulse to German literary style. The paper investigates one exemplary case of such cultural contact: Prince Ludwig von Anhalt-Köthen’s Anmutige Gespräch (1619), the translation of Giovan Battista Gelli’s dialogue Capricci del Bottaio (1546). Gelli was an influential member of the Accademia Fiorentina, a 16th century Florentine language academy. In his Capricci, Gelli debates the legitimacy of the Florentine vernacular as a scientific and literary language. Through an analysis of Prince Ludwig’s commentaries to his translation of the Capricci, the paper shows how Prince Ludwig applied Gelli’s arguments in favour of the vernacular to the German context, and how these arguments resonated even years later in the writings of the Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft, a German language academy led by Prince Ludwig from 1617 to 1650. As translation was seen as a form of ‘language work’ both by the Accademia Fiorentina and by the Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft, the most salient linguistic features of Ludwig’s translation is analysed in the paper in order to show how the theoretical discussion on translation was implemented in the translation process. This investigation shows how translating from Italian promoted a more conversational literary style that distanced itself from the pompous, formulaic chancery language that was still seen as exemplary of good language use in 17th century Germany.

Translation, the Vernacular Debate, and the Evolution of Literary Writing Style Between Italy and Germany

The eighteenth century is often connected with economic improvement. Considering the significant functional expansion of the English language during this period, driven by various socio-cultural changes, and the contemporary interest in the economy, we hypothesize that this linguistic expansion facilitated the spread of economic vocabulary to new contexts. Combining linguistic and historical expertise, we study vocabulary drawn from the ‘trade and finance’ section of the Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary in economic texts included in Eighteenth Century Collections Online. We identify incoming economic lexis based on its rate of change and apply multi-dimensional analysis to extract four lexical dimensions of economic discourse, which we interpret as (1) public income and expenditure, (2) public debt, (3) financial system, and (4) private enterprise. The lexical items associated with the dimensions are mostly Latin or French in origin, and many of them are neologisms that are first attested in the later eighteenth century, suggesting their widespread introduction into the language around that time. We show that at the beginning of the century, the use of the items that were extant then tends to be more concrete and local, with more abstract and wide-reaching contexts added towards the end of the century. This suggests a specialization of economic discourse that is related to the emergence of political economy as a field for intellectual theorizing.

Dimensions of Incoming Economic Vocabulary in Eighteenth-Century Britain

18世纪英国外来经济词汇的维度

In the article, selected Slovenian manuscripts written between 1550 and 1623 are studied in light of their adherence to the established (Protestant) language standard of the period or their deviation from it, with the aim of assessing the diffusion of the Protestant standard to non-religious texts produced in the central Slovenian area in the given period. The adherence to the standard is assessed on the basis of some orthographical, phonological and morphological features of the texts which are compared to the same features in the works of the dominant Protestant writers, especially Dalmatin’s Bible, and to the standard set in the Catholic EVANGELIA INU LYSTVVI 1612. The analysis shows that the sociolinguistic situation in the second half of the 16th century and the first quarter of the 17th century can be described as diglossic, with the language of the majority of analyzed manuscripts being not distinctly dialectal nor entirely adhering to the Protestant language standard, though greater adherence to the established standards is observable in the manuscripts written by priests; in general, manuscripts can be characterized as hybrid, their language combining dialectal reflections with features characteristic of the Protestant standard.
