The journal Radiocarbon aims to publish technical and interpretive articles on all aspects of 14C and other cosmogenic isotopes. Additionally, we provide regional compilations and interpretive texts, both published and unpublished. Besides the proceedings of the International Radiocarbon Conference, which occurs every three years, we occasionally publish special issues focused on specific topics.

ABSTRACT Methane contributes substantially to global warming as the second most important anthropogenic greenhouse gas. Radiocarbon ( 14 C) measurements of atmospheric methane can be used as a source apportionment tool, as they allow distinction between thermogenic and biogenic methane sources. However, these measurements remain scarce due to labor-intensive methods required. A new setup for the preparation of atmospheric methane samples for radiocarbon analysis is presented. The system combines a methane preconcentration line with a preparative gas chromatography technique to isolate pure methane samples for a compound-specific radiocarbon analysis. In order to minimize sample preparation time, we designed a simplified preconcentration line for the extraction of methane from 50 L atmospheric air, which corresponds to 50 µg C as required for a reliable 14 C analysis of methane-derived CO 2 gas measurement with accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The system guarantees a quantitative extraction of methane from atmospheric air samples for 14 C analysis, with a good repeatability and a low processing blank. The setup was originally designed for the measurement of samples with low methane concentrations, but it can also be adapted to apportion sources from environmental compartments with high methane levels such as freshwaters or wetlands.

Abstract Research by the Tlalancaleca Archaeological Project (PATP) has corroborated modifications to the Middle Formative chronology in Puebla-Tlaxcala (Lesure et al. 2006, 2014) using Bayesian modeling on 26 radiocarbon dates from Tlalancaleca. The present study is the first to evaluate the region’s Middle Formative chronology with radiocarbon dates from superposed stratigraphy. Nine Bayesian models were constructed with different combinations of radiocarbon dates and OxCal’s phase and sequence functions to determine the beginning and end of the Texoloc phase. Results place the Tlatempa-Texoloc transition at around 650 cal BC and the Texoloc-Tezoquipan transition at around 500 cal BC. The OxCal Interval function supports a timespan of approximately 150 years for the duration of the Texoloc phase. These results suggest the process of initial urbanization in Central Mexico was a rapid one.

Dating the beginning of urbanization in Central Mexico: a high-resolution chronology of the Middle Formative Period at Tlalancaleca

Abstract This paper presents an improved setup for radiocarbon analysis of water-soluble organic carbon based on wet chemical oxidation as installed at the Laboratory for the Analysis of Radiocarbon with AMS (LARA) at the University of Bern. The implementation of a non-dispersive infrared CO 2 detector allows more precise and accurate quantification of carbon amounts in samples and establishes the possibility of simple monitoring of the efficacy of flushing and sampling processes. A detailed blank assessment unveiled undesired oxidation of different materials and sample temperature as critical factors regarding the level of constant contamination. Contamination arising from oxidation of septum pieces and carbon-based glues in conventional sampling needles was minimized by developing a glass-sintered needle. This new needle was also designed to be longer, reducing the minimum amount of sample solution needed to 2 mL. The oxidation time and temperature (1 hr at 75°C) were optimized to further decrease contamination during analyses of samples with carbon amounts of up to ∼50 µg. With these improvements, we now report low constant contamination levels of 0.62 ± 0.12 µg C (with F 14 C of 0.19 ± 0.04), whereas the cross contamination factor was determined to be 0.25 ± 0.07%.

An improved setup for radiocarbon analysis of water-soluble organic carbon in environmental matrices

Abstract Most of the carbonate samples have a basic well-defined pretreatment protocol for 14 C-AMS dating, but particularities of specific organisms have to be treated with care. This is the case of stromatolite samples, in which carbonate is formed by biogenesis and also has a porous structure that could contain recent organic material as a contaminant. In this work, we analyzed the differences in the radiocarbon content by using organic matter removals before chemical treatment with HCl: sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) a 0.7M solution with pH ∼11, and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) an 8.8M solution with pH ∼5. These treatments were chosen because they are the most used in stromatolite samples for geochemical analysis. To compare the impact of the organic matter removal treatments in stromatolite samples we also processed them as regular carbonate samples for radiocarbon analysis, with no organic matter removal (control samples). X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence have been used to obtain mineral and elemental characterization, respectively. H 2 O 2 could not influence the results of Mg-calcite concentrate samples. The use of NaOCl appears to have been effective in preserving more material than H 2 O 2 independent of the mineralogical composition of the stromatolite layers. The F 14 C results after HCl etching for Mg-calcite concentrated samples were similar to those without etching suggesting that the HCl etching does not impact the results in this case. The organic matter removal is more important than the etching procedure for stromatolite samples. NaOCl is more indicated to be used as chemical pretreatment for radiocarbon analysis purposes independent of the mineral matrix of samples.

Abstract A limitation in fine-tuned tree-ring radiocarbon ( 14 C) data is normally associated with overall data uncertainty. Tree-ring 14 C data variance as a result of sample heterogeneity can be reduced by adopting best practices at the time of sample collection and subsequent preparation and analysis. Variance-reduction of 14 C data was achieved by meticulous sample handling during increment core or cross-sectional cuttings, in-laboratory wood reductions, and cellulose fiber homogenization of whole rings. To demonstrate the performance of those procedures to final 14 C results, we took advantage of the replicated data from assigned calendar years of two Pantropical post-1950 AD tree-ring 14 C reconstructions. Two Cedrela fissilis Vell. trees spaced 22.5 km apart, and two trees of this species together with one Peltogyne paniculata Benth tree spaced 0.2 to 5 km apart were sampled in a tropical dry and moist forest, respectively. Replicate 14 C data were then obtained from grouped tree-ring samples from each site. A total of 88% of the replicated 14 C results fell into a remarkably consistent precision/accuracy range of 0.3% or less, even though multiple tree species were used as pairs/sets. This finding illustrates how adopting a few simple strategies, in tandem with already established chemical extraction procedures and high-precision 14 C analysis, can improve 14 C data results of tropical trees.

Evaluating possible sources of error in tree-ring <sup>14</sup>C data using multiple trees across South America

Abstract AMS radiocarbon ages of organic matter from ice wedges and enclosing peat were determined for the polygonal peatland at the Lorino site on the eastern coast of the Chukchi Peninsula. The study’s goal was to fill a knowledge gap about the dynamics of polygonal peatlands with ice wedges and winter climate conditions during the Holocene in this easternmost region of the Russian Arctic. It has been found that peatland accumulated during the Younger Dryas and early Holocene, mostly between 14 and 9.9 cal ka BP, while ice wedges were dated from 7.7 to 6.6 cal ka BP. Since ice wedges have features of syngenetic growth, the discrepancy in the age of ice wedges and enclosing peatland may result from the significant presence of early and pre-Holocene peat. It is assumed that the older polygonal peatland deeply thawed during the Holocene optimum, and subsequently, when the permafrost aggraded, a new generation of ice wedges was formed. The AMS 14 C age (18.1 cal ka BP) of the ice wedge exposed below the peat indicates the presence of a Late Pleistocene generation of ice wedges at the study site. Paleotemperature reconstructions based on the stable isotope composition of ice wedges show that the mean January air temperature during the Northgrippian stage of the Holocene varied from –27 to –23°C, and at the end of the Late Pleistocene, from –32 to –26°C.

Chronologies of active growth of ice wedges and Middle Holocene palaeoclimate at Lorino site, Chukchi Peninsula, easternmost Siberia

Abstract Ecuador is a key area in South America when it comes to understanding the economic, social and archaeological aspects of pre-Hispanic cultures in the northwestern region of the Andes. Among the most complex societies to have inhabited this territory is the so-called Manteño culture (AD ∼800–1530), which spanned across most of Ecuador’s central Pacific coast. Ongoing research at the site of Ligüiqui (Manta, Manabí) has enabled us to obtain a more complete overview of the chronological sequence of the Manteño period as well as contributing further data on the advanced stage of social development reached during the period; characterized by the hierarchical arrangement of sites, the use of extensive settlement models, and semi-circular stone fish traps ( corrales ). In order to understand the role played by this coastal site in the complex Manteño culture, a detailed radiocarbon study was performed in the sequence of the Ligüiqui site. In addition, using a detailed review of available Manteño settlement radiocarbon data (13 sites and 64 dates), we established a chronostratigraphic framework for the culture. Our data indicate that Ligüiqui probably acted as a supply centre for marine-origin products from the twelfth century onwards with activity peaking during the Late Manteño period. A multisite comparison using Bayesian modeling indicates an early onset of the Manteño culture in Ligüiqui around AD 700, and a general demise in most of the sites AD ∼1500 or slightly before. This culture finally collapsed before AD ∼1600 during the early Spanish colonial period. Only one site, La Libertad, shows potential evidence of having remained a Manteño settlement after that date.
