Abstract: Desierto sonoro (2019), Valeria Luiselli's first novel written in English and published both in English and Spanish translation, has been read by critics as an anglophone novel of "sentimental activism" (David James), with focus on the literary representation of an ongoing refugee crisis of children migrating across the southern border of the United States. This essay argues that the multiple archival registers of the novel—listening and recording devices as well as books, notes, photographs—suggest a hemispheric dimension, enabling a reading of the novel situated both in the Latin American tradition of archival fictions as well as the Anglo-American modernist tradition. As a modernist novel written in a densely poetic style, Desierto sonoro is concerned with inhabiting a past always already mediated by other texts, music, and images; as a Latin American novel, its concern is with the critique and retelling of foundational myths, embodied in storytelling and the realist tradition of Latin American writing. As such, through a deployment of different registers of experience, this novel challenges readers to think of archives as depositories of both written history and oral storytelling.

Abstract: A decolonial analysis of teaching materials provides insight into the ways in which Spanish culture, history, and society are conveyed in the language curriculum in the United States. Focusing on textbooks adopted for the course "Culture and Civilization", this article evaluates the identities which are privileged in the discourse, and the ones that are discriminated. Non-white ethnic or racial groups are subcategorized through negative stereotypes. This marginalization –– or even exclusion–– invites us to consider the degree of racism distilled in such manuals. First, after reviewing decolonial perspectives in education, this article assesses the degrading bias applied to the Roma community. Second, it analyzes two historical lacunae: the planned genocide against them and the presence of enslaved Black people. These absences privilege a cultural identity narrative focused on white men since the so-called Reconquista . Third, this article reviews an uncritically reiterated historical fallacy: the loss of the Spanish colonies in 1898. In this sense, the article summons the incidence of Spanish colonialism in Africa to be included in textbooks. Finally, it evaluates approaches to promote an active decolonization, without resorting to diversity as a mere agglutinating ornament.

拉扎、民族、遗忘与历史谬误：美国西班牙语文本分析

Abstract: Which experiences, practices, and memories of a contemporary Argentinian publisher become part of their memoirs? How do publishers define their own trajectories? This article analyzes a relatively recent phenomenon in the field of publishing: the multiplication of books by publishers based on their own work, which is a key source for researchers of the publishing world. The present study focuses on the case of Un camino con los libros by Leandro de Sagastizábal (2023), memoirs with stories from 45 years of a career. This analysis defines two main dimensions: the ways in which the narrative is structured, and the aspects of the trajectory and of publishing that are highlighted. This article describes the style of the text; next, after identifying the periodization of the career, defines structuring facets of the publishing work: a) publisher-book promoter; b) publisher-professor/researcher; c) publisher-author; d) publisher-publisher; and e) publisher-adviser-public official. This analysis leads to theoretical reflections that remain to be explored on the ways memories become biographic devices of self-reflection.

Abstract: Among the autobiographies of Spanish-language publishers, Carlos Barral’s project undoubtedly stands out, consisting of three volumes plus an autofiction, which he published between 1975 and 1988, precisely when his power as a publisher had expired. The set of these four texts is not only essential for understanding the socio-literary strategies of an entire period of Spanish, European and Latin American literature. In addition, it builds a complex and exceptional image of the publisher over time, in which can be detected the decision-making process, the importance of symbolic and economic capital, and the effect of the different literary and political struggles. In short, the repertoire of successes and failures, of alliances and enmities, of criticisms and self-criticisms that distinguish the position of the editor from that of other literary activity agents.
