Flexible protective materials with suitable properties are necessary for personal low-velocity impact (LVI) protection. Flock-reinforced shear thickening gel (FRSTG) can absorb energy through its state transition, thereby showing great potential in applications for LVI protection. However, the unstable state of FRSTG with a slight flow behavior challenges its LVI-resistant evaluation and in-depth development in use. Herein, three-dimensional (3D) warp-knitted spacer fabric (WKSF) composites were obtained by infusing FRSTG in high proportions (≥75%). FRSTG was observed to be stably and randomly distributed in the spacer layer of the WKSF, and the desirable flexibility of the composites was confirmed. The LVI protection effect of FRSTG was better than that of shear thickening gel at the same composite ratio, and the composite with an 83% FRSTG proportion absorbed more than 80% of the impact energy. Besides, FRSTG dominated the composites, showing enhanced responsiveness to the impact with increased velocity. Accordingly, this study constructed stable and LVI-resistant 3D flexible composites with FRSTG as the main functional component, which provided new ideas for the development of wearable protective equipment.

Warp-knitted spacer fabric flexible composites with high stability and low-velocity impact resistance infused by flock-reinforced shear thickening gel

Fabrics with proper mechanical properties and high structural designability are frequently selected as the reinforcement of flexible composites. Shear thickening materials (STMs), including shear thickening fluid and shear thickening gel, are dense colloidal suspensions exhibiting an abrupt increase in viscosity with increasing shear rate. Shear thickening fabric composites (STFCs) which combined STM with fabrics, have been increasingly in demand for impact protective applications due to their tremendous potential. Herein, the characteristics of STM and the effects of fabric reinforcement on STFC impact behaviors are discussed for optimizing their properties and structures. Subsequently, the impact behaviors of STFCs obtained by multiple testing approaches with different impact threats are reviewed systematically. Furthermore, a comprehensive summary of the existing literature on stab, drop-weight, split Hopkinson pressure bar, and ballistic impact protective mechanisms of STFCs is presented. It is found that based on the proper selection of STM types, thorough mechanistic explanations of STFC impact behaviors are instructive and could facilitate the development of wearable protective equipment. The purpose of this critical review is to provide a framework for comparison of the effective impact resistances of STFCs across many applications and to discuss issues for future research.

Shear thickening fabric composites for impact protection: a review

Improving ring spinning efficiency and yarn quality is still challenging due to the sliding friction heat generated by the ring/traveler system, which limits the traveler speed and the yarn production rate. In this study, a finite element model based on the external heat source method was first used to explore the heat transfer process of the ring/traveler system. The reliability of the model was verified empirically. Subsequently, the validated model was used to analyze the effect of the model parameters on the temperature of the ring/traveler system. The results confirm that the high-temperature region of the ring and the traveler was concentrated on their contact area. More specifically the maximum temperature of the traveler was 159.2°C, which was almost three times the maximum temperature of the ring (62.6°C). In addition, smaller frictional coefficient and yarn tension, larger contact area and heat absorption rate, and better thermal conductivity can reduce the high local temperature of the ring/traveler system. Among them, yarn tension, friction coefficient, and heat absorption rate have a significant influence on the system temperature, especially for the small traveler. The developed model is also available for different fiber types and yarn counts which can be used for a comprehensive investigation of the heat transfer in ring spinning processes. The model and results of this study offer a theoretical basis for further optimizing the ring/traveler system and improving the productivity of ring spinning.

Numerical analysis of heat transfer in ring spinning

This paper provides a comprehensive and disaggregated set of elasticity estimates, to date, in the face of MFA abolishment. The estimates made here are at a detailed level of disaggregation and should provide researchers with opportunities for future analysis. We used the gravity model to estimate the trade elasticity of China’s apparel cottons in the US market for the period between 1989 and 2009. From the gravity model, two phenomena are observed. First, there exists a unique long-run equilibrium relationship among the import quantity demand, the import price and the US GDP per capita. Second, import price and income elasticity are significant with the expected signs, conditions of which are significant for performing trade—policy analyses.

Export Conditions of the Chinese Textile Industry: An Analysis in Comparison with Selected ASEAN Countries

Wetness sensation is a crucial factor affecting wear comfort. In this study, a measurement method that is capable of characterizing the subjective wetness sensation of various textile products, such as sportswear, leisurewear, uniforms and health-care products, was developed. A subjective rating scale was adopted for response measurement and 20 different fabrics varying in fiber composition, yarn type and fabric structure were evaluated by 22 subjects. The testing procedure was standardized, ensuring within-subject reliability and between-subject consistency. This method also displays high sensitivity and the result is rational with barely to slightly wet sensation for the absorbing fabrics and very wet feeling for the hydrophobic ones. In addition, an objective measurement method for evaluating the horizontal wicking area of fabrics utilizing the image analysis technique was developed. Using conventional testing instruments, such as the Gravimetric Absorbency Testing System, Moisture Management Tester, international standard testing methods and the proposed horizontal wicking tester, various objective water absorption and transport properties were measured and their correlation with the subjective wetness rating was studied. Horizontal wicking area and water absorption capacity of fabrics were found to have strong correlation with subjective wetness sensation.

Assessing and predicting the subjective wetness sensation of textiles: subjective and objective evaluation

Numerical modeling of textile structures at the yarn level is challenging, yet provides information not obtainable through experimental studies alone. This study is focused on the development and finite-element analysis (FEA) of a three-dimensional (3D) woven structure with an in-plane negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR) effect, with the aim of exploring its potential applications in polymer composite reinforcement. While experimental and geometrical studies of 3D auxetic woven structures provide primary information, they have limitations in explaining the auxetic behavior of the structure at the yarn level. Additionally, prediction of the auxetic behavior of the 3D woven structure by varying material properties is only possible through FEA. Therefore, to overcome these limitations, a 3D FEA model of the structure was developed using commercially available software (Abaqus CAE-2020) to simulate the auxetic behavior. The structure was then studied for different binding yarn properties once a good agreement had been found between simulated and experimental results. The FEA provides new insights and provokes fresh discussion on the auxetic behavior of the 3D woven structure. One significant finding from the FEA is the strong influence of the axial ([Formula: see text]) and radial ([Formula: see text]) moduli of the binding yarn on the Poisson’s ratio of the 3D woven structure; [Formula: see text] has an inverse relationship, while [Formula: see text] demonstrates a direct relationship with the auxetic behavior of the structure. The developed FEA model is expected to provide a better foundation for the future development of 3D auxetic structures, particularly concerning their application in polymer composite reinforcement.

Three-dimensional auxetic woven fabric structure with in-plane negative Poisson’s ratio for composite reinforcement: A finite-element analysis

Because of the non-uniformity of the CIELAB color space, scientists and researchers have tried to find the best formula for the CIELAB color space which provides consistent color difference results. The computing performances of the four color difference formulas (CIELAB1976, CMC, CIE94, and CIEDE2000) were tested in the four principal hue regions of the CIELAB color space at a constant lightness value of 50 ( L* = 50) which corresponds to the largest chromaticity plane around the gray point ( L* = 50; a* = 0; b* = 0). The dependence and consistency of the four formulas were investigated according to regular and constant color coordinate changes by using a specially prepared computer software. The experimental results showed that the three formulas other than CIELAB1976 computed in different manners peculiar to themselves and the CMC formula gave the most distinct results on different hue regions of the a*– b* color plane. CIELAB1976, CIE94, and CIEDE2000 formulas were found to compute the most consistent color difference results in the different hue regions. The color difference ( ΔE*) computing behaviors of the three formulas, other than CIELAB1976, changed depending on hue and chroma differences due to polar color difference considerations of their formulas, as expected.

Computing characteristics of color difference formulas for regular coordinate changes in CIELAB color space

Compression textiles are prevalent in sports, healthcare and medical products. However, challenges have appeared in designing graduated compression stockings, including the need for systematic studies on leg geometry and the complex pressure-measuring process. This study investigated the pressure performance of suggested and undersized stockings, particularly when the wearer's leg size exceeds the supplier's recommendations. The relationship between pressure and the wearer’s body fat, muscle mass, bone percentage and body mass index (BMI) was also analyzed. A 3D-printed leg mannequin was developed to predict the pressure exerted on human legs. Fifteen healthy female adults were recruited to evaluate two commercially available travel-oriented graduated compression stockings in a seated position with 90° knee flexion. This study found that both stockings failed to provide the theoretical pressure gradient in which the highest pressure was found at below calf (b 1 ). The stocking wearer should ensure that both their legs and the selected stocking sizes align with the supplier’s recommendations to avoid unexpectedly high pressure applied to their legs. Among body fat, muscle mass, bone percentage and BMI, only pressure measured at below calf (b 1 ) can be predicted by bone percentage. Furthermore, the developed 3D-printed leg mannequin can be cost-effective for pressure evaluation in the initial compression stocking development stages. It helps reduce the need for repeated human trials while enabling customization to replicate different leg shapes and sizes, thereby conserving time and resources in the research process. Future studies should be conducted with an improved design of the leg mannequin and more extensive participant groups.

Graduated compression stocking performance: Insights from wearers and development of a cost-effective 3D-printed leg mannequin

As the ethical movement against animal products continues to gain momentum, ultra-fine fiber suede has become a popular alternative to leather. The key to successfully replacing the emotional appeal of natural leather lies in creating a unique appearance and hand with the ultra-fine fibers used in suede. In this paper, the preferred hand of suede among consumers was analyzed by examining the combination of suede’s base fabric and raising cycles. The results showed that both the raising cycles and base fabric had an effect on its mechanical properties, subjective hands, and overall preference of suede. However, the influence of the base fabric was greater than that of the raising cycles, and there was no significant difference after four cycles. The knitting type and fineness of the base fabric directly affected the mechanical properties of suede. Ultimately, our subjective evaluation of 50 female experts showed a preference for soft and warm suede fabric. Additionally, the results found that the base fabric has a more significant impact on increasing smoothness, hand preference, and preference for jackets than raising cycles. Therefore, when selecting a base fabric, it is important to consider the intended use of the suede. For example, gray weft-knits should be used for density and elasticity, while gray warp-knits are better for dimensional stability.

Effect of base fabric and raising cycles on mechanical properties, subjective hands and preference of ultra-fine fiber suede

The spinning rotor is a key element for rotor spinning, but fibers will wear when they move in the spinning rotor. In this paper, a model of fiber and spinning rotor was established to investigate the wearing properties of fibers and rotor wall influenced by stripping velocities, Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio. The simulation results indicate that the wear degree of fibers gradually increases with increasing stripping velocity, Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio. During the fibers’ movement in a rotor, there exists a stress concentration zone on processed fibers. The damage degree of the spinning rotor wall increases with stripping velocity and also varies depending on the differences in fiber properties. Taking the fibers from the stripping point as experimental samples, the surface wear of damaged fibers is observed by scanning electron microscopy, and the decrease in fiber strength with stripping velocity is measured. The experimental results show a good agreement with simulations. The research in this paper provides a preliminary guide for the selection of fiber raw materials and optimization of process parameters in rotor spinning, which in turn improves the physical properties of rotor yarn.
