Vehicle System Dynamics

Automobiles are becoming more and more complex as multiple control systems are integrated into the vehicle platform. This paper investigates the coordination of active rear steering (RWS) and torque vectoring (TV) – which is enabled by independent electric motors at the rear axle – in controlling vehicle lateral dynamics. The proposed controller aims at enhancing vehicle handling performance and stability while cornering. The coordination of the two actuators is achieved by weighting their contribution based on their impact on vehicle dynamics according to the working condition. The impact of each control system is assessed by means of phase portraits. These plots are a very powerful tool for analysing vehicle nonlinear dynamics as they readily display vehicle stability properties and map equilibrium point locations and movement to changing parameters and control inputs. Based on phase portrait analysis, a performance index is thus proposed, which weights more the control action (TV or RWS) capable of leading the vehicle at the nearest equilibrium point with the fastest rate. The controller performance is assessed through numerical simulations carried out using a nonlinear 14 dofs vehicle model. Results are compared with ones of the two controllers alone (RWS and TV) in different manoeuvers and adherence conditions.

SUMMARY The accelerated service life testing of automotive vehicles for durability to road roughness induced dynamic loads is often accomplished in the laboratory using road roughness simulation facilities [1–5]. However, such tests can also be accomplished by a carefully designed field operation on a test course [6], where both the speed of the vehicle and the roughness of die test course become variables that control the degree of the test acceleration. Field tests are generally harder to control than laboratory tests, but offer a greater degree of realism since the vehicle is fully operational during the test exactly as it will be in service. This paper formulates the criteria for accelerated service life tests on a test course, evaluates the assumptions that must be enforced to obtain valid results, and explores the sensitivity of the results to the critical test parameters, namely, the vehicle speed and the road roughness severity of the test course relative to the service environment.

Accelerated Service Life Testing of Automotive Vehicles on a Test Course

Overhead conductor rail (OCR) is an important power supply device in tunnel railway lines. The penalty method is widely adopted to model the dynamic interaction behaviour of the pantograph-OCR system (POCRs), while it is difficult to determine a proper contact stiffness value. This paper proposes a three-dimensional contact formulation for the POCRs based on the Lagrange multiplier method. Accurate contact forces can be obtained easily by this contact formulation without the trouble of determining the contact stiffness. Contact force is defined in the global coordinate system as a three-dimensional vector. Coulomb law of friction is adopted in this paper to describe the tangential contact force, and the train speed is included in the contact formulation. The central finite difference approximation method is utilised, and an iteration procedure is elaborated to calculate the accurate contact force vector. The proposed contact formulation is verified by comparing simulation results with in-line measured data. The maximum statistical relative error of the contact force is only 2.63%. The advantages of the proposed contact formulation are also demonstrated by comparing it with the penalty method.

Three-dimensional contact formulation for assessment of dynamic interaction of pantograph and overhead conductor rail system

This paper describes the results of a voluntary benchmark initiative concerning the simulation of pantograph–catenary interaction, which was proposed and coordinated by Politecnico di Milano and participated by 10 research institutions established in 9 different countries across Europe and Asia. The aims of the benchmark are to assess the dispersion of results on the same simulation study cases, to demonstrate the accuracy of numerical methodologies and simulation models and to identify the best suited modelling approaches to study pantograph–catenary interaction. One static and three dynamic simulation cases were defined for a non-existing but realistic high-speed pantograph–catenary couple. These cases were run using 10 of the major simulation codes presently in use for the study of pantograph–catenary interaction, and the results are presented and critically discussed here. All input data required to run the study cases are also provided, allowing the use of this benchmark as a term of comparison for other simulation codes.

The results of the pantograph–catenary interaction benchmark

This paper examines the dynamic performance of the pantograph passing through an overlap section of the catenary system, using a China's high speed railway with the 4-span overlap as an example. The pantograph and catenary system are simulated as a lumped mass model and finite element model, respectively. The model is verified according to EN50318:2018. The model is also assessed against an experimental study of the contact force and uplift of contact wire at 300 km/h. Then the contact force and uplift of contact wire at the speed of 150–350 km/h are calculated. The research shows that when the pantograph passes through the overlap, the maximum contact force increases beyond 14%, the standard deviation of the contact force increases by more than 26%, and the increase of the vertical displacement exceeds 38%, which becomes more apparent with the increase of speed. Under the influence of aerodynamic force, when the running speed increases from 150 to 350 km/h, the mean contact force in the knuckle-downstream and knuckle-upstream orientation increase by 59.49% and 97.85%, respectively. As a result, the contact force and vertical displacement increase greatly when passing through the overlap section, which could affect the current collection quality.

Analysis of contact force and uplift of pantograph–catenary system in overlap section based on numerical simulations and experimental tests

Due to the rapid response and high torque output of the electric motor, drivers and passengers in battery electric vehicles are more prone to dizziness. This is particularly challenging for mitigating motion sickness, as acceleration performance conflicts with ride comfort. In this article, we develop ideal comfort ellipses based on various driving cycles, which show a comfort zone for driving. A comfort dynamics model is formulated using acceleration, which is then applied to design a model predictive controller. In addition, the motion sickness dose value is used as an indicator to evaluate the effectiveness of the control strategy. The proposed approach is validated on a battery electric vehicle under the Economic Commission for Europe driving cycle, Worldwide harmonised Light-duty vehicles Test Cycle and linear driving condition. The results indicate that, compared to scenarios without the control strategy, this approach reduces the motion sickness dose value by 20.34%, 34.67%, and 24.11%, respectively, enhancing ride comfort and mitigating motion sickness.

For ride comfort and handling performance design of vehicles, anisotropic rubber bushings are used as the connection between lower arms and body frames. The nonlinear vibration performance with the deformation amplitude is advantageous to minimise vibration transmission at low magnitude responses and to reduce deformation at large excitations. During transient deformation, the area under the force-deformation curve serves as an indicator for evaluating vibration reduction and isolation performance. The elastomer geometric variables such as the relative radius between the inner and outer contact surfaces are effective design parameters for controlling bushing dynamic behaviour. This study presents a dynamic model to understand the nonlinear stiffness by the contact theory after addressing the actions between elastomer surfaces. The proposed model was confirmed by the measured dynamics stiffness and damping performance. Their influence on the vehicle ride comfort was investigated.

This paper introduces a novel approach to improve the lateral stability of car–trailer systems by implementing an in-wheel motor-driven trailer. The proposed torque vectoring controller aims to improve lateral stability by minimising hitch rate and angle. The controller utilises an extended Kalman filter for estimating the vehicle's lateral velocity. The in-wheel motor torque vectoring controller is designed based on the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) technique, with a linear state-space model derived from the nonlinear equations through linearisation at the desired state for each time step. Simulation results, conducted through MATLAB and Simulink, validate the effectiveness of the controller in reducing instability during a single lane change. Real road driving tests are conducted to further validate the proposed system. The in-wheel motor-driven trailer demonstrates a substantial reduction in hitch rate and angle, contributing to enhanced stability. Despite constraints on the in-wheel motor's torque output, the proposed torque vectoring controller proves to be effective in real road driving conditions.

This paper focuses on insufficient perception in blind scenes and the failures of the actuator and sensor of vehicle suspension. The safe speed is designed and the fault-tolerant strategy based on the observer is designed when the actuator and sensor fail simultaneously. A speed planning strategy to ensure that vehicles operate at a safe speed is proposed. The Markov suspension fault jump model considering the suspension sensor and actuator faults is established. Based on the fault estimation obtained by the fault observer, a fault tolerance control strategy of sensor signal reconstruction and actuator fault compensation is adopted. The measurement index for evaluating fault tolerance effectiveness has been established, and an exploration of fault tolerance control is conducted across various fault levels, to identify the preferred fault tolerance strategies corresponding to different levels of fault tolerance. The simulation results show that the designed speed control strategy can improve vehicle safety by decelerating in advance, the fault observer is capable of accurately estimating the true values of actuator and sensor faults. The simulation and vehicle test results demonstrate that similar suspension performance has been obtained by fault-tolerant control strategy and preferred fault tolerance under different fault tolerance levels compared with normal fault tolerance.
