Disparities in psychosocial adjustment have been identified for lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) youth, yet research that explores multiple sources of social support among subgroups of LGB youth is sparse. Social support theory is used as a framework to analyze the ways that different sources of support might promote better psychosocial adjustment for LGB youth. Data from a diverse sample among LGB youth ( N = 835) were used to understand how social support from a close friend, teachers, classmates, and parents might be differently associated with depression and self-esteem. We found that parent support and its importance to the participant were consistently related to higher self-esteem and lower depression for all youth, except for lesbians for whom no forms of social support were associated with self-esteem. Teacher and classmate support influenced some subgroups more than others. These results provide parents, clinicians, and schools a roadmap to assist youth navigate supports.

Sources of Social Support and Mental Health Among LGB Youth

This study explores the complex dynamics between cyber-ostracism, depression, and cyberbullying among 870 Chinese adolescents (50.9% boys, M age = 13.03, SD = 0.76). Using a cross-lagged panel analysis, the results found: (1) bidirectional associations between cyber-ostracism and depression, with cyber-ostracism at Time 1(T1) significantly and positively predicted depression at Time 2(T2), and depression at T1 significantly and positively predicted cyber-ostracism at T2; (2) depression at T1 significantly and positively predicted cyberbullying perpetration at T2; (3) cyberbullying perpetration at T1 significantly and positively predicted cyber-ostracism at T2; (4) depression mediated the relationship between cyber-ostracism and cyberbullying perpetration, and (5) gender differences were observed only in the path from depression at T1 to cyber-ostracism at T2, with a significant association for girls but not for boys. This study highlights the complex interplay between cyber-ostracism, depression, and adolescents’ cyberbullying perpetration, shedding light on the importance of addressing these issues in a gender-sensitive manner.

Cyber-Ostracism, Depression, and Adolescents’ Cyberbullying Perpetration: A Cross-Lagged Panel Analysis

There has been a great deal of scholarly interest in trying to uncover the factors that account for variation in educational attainment. Equally important, but not yet fully answered, is why some people aspire for high levels of education and others do not and, moreover, why some people believe that they will reach their educational aspirations and others do not have much optimism. The current study sought to address this gap in the literature by examining whether socialization factors and individual differences account for why some people reach their desired level of education and why some people believe that they will reach their desired level of education while others do not hold such beliefs. To do so, data drawn from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health were analyzed. We examined four outcome measures related to whether the participant earned their desired level of education and whether the participant believed that they would achieve their desired level of education if they had not already. Each of these models was estimated for the full sample and separately for males and females. The results revealed that neighborhood disadvantage was associated with achieving the desired level of education in some of the models for the full sample as well as separately for males and females. In addition, intelligence, low self-control, and delinquency were consistently related to reaching the desired level of education in the full sample and for females, but not males.

Factors Associated with Achieving the Desired Level of Education in a Longitudinal and Nationally Representative Sample

Determining the mechanisms underlying the relationships between emotional autonomy and subjective well-being is necessary for understanding the psychological functioning of adolescents. The current study examined inner prosociality and hope as serial mediators in the relationships from emotional autonomy to subjective well-being. Using convenience sampling, a total of 355 adolescents ( M age = 14.23 ± 0.54, 50.4% boys), who were continuing their education in a public secondary school, completed the Emotional Autonomy Scale, Adolescent Prosociality Scale, Children’s Hope Scale, and Measurement of Subjective Well-Being. The results indicated direct effects from higher emotional autonomy to greater subjective well-being. Also, there was a significant indirect effect from higher emotional autonomy to greater subjective well-being through higher inner prosociality and hope. These findings may inform the development of interventions, indicating that the cultivation of psychosocial resources like inner prosociality and hope may help improve the subjective well-being of adolescents.

Inner Prosociality, Hope, Emotional Autonomy, and Subjective Well-Being in Adolescents: A Serial Mediation Model

青少年内在亲社会性、希望、情绪自主与主观幸福感：一个序列中介模型

To effectively prevent and address self-harm behavior (SHB), it is crucial to understand the relational and social contexts of young people (YP) who engage in SHB, as well as the meanings they ascribe to their behavior. The aim of study is to gain a deeper understanding of the processes SHB among YP in disadvantaged neighborhoods in Turkey. The research examines the factors that contribute to SHB and how YP interpret this behavior. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 YP, aged 14 to 24, who demonstrated moderate SHB that did not lead to mutilation. Through the application of Embodied Grounded Theory, findings were organized into 11 sub-categories and 4 main categories and presents a model proposal for understanding the SHB journeys of these YP. The findings highlight the significance of the meanings attached to SHB in its onset and persistence, besides the influence of social and relational contexts on these meanings.

Self-Harm in Young People From Disadvantaged Neighborhoods in Turkey: A Grounded Theory Analysis of Contextual Risks and Functions

Youths’ perspectives, unique from adults, are shaped by their developmental experiences. This study contextualizes the meaning of mental health and being mentally healthy from adolescent perspectives. Four focus groups of students in grades 9 to 12 ( N = 27) were recruited from a school in an urban city. Participants were mainly female ( n = 22) and majority students of color (e.g., Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx; n = 21). Researchers interpreted the data through a pragmatic lens. Three main themes emerged: Describing Mental Health, Defining Mentally Healthy, and Integrating the Role of Social Environments. Two subthemes were also identified. The study highlights the significance of including youth contributions in defining terms such as mental health and being mentally healthy and underscores the importance of the environmental context to youth’s conceptualization of mental health, with a focus on resiliency-building factors. Findings have applicability for incorporating youth voice in interventions designed to improve youth mental health and foster positive youth development.
