ZAAC is an international scientific journal which publishes original papers on new relevant research results from all areas of inorganic chemistry, solid state chemistry, and co-ordination chemistry.

The contributions reflect the latest findings in these research areas and serve the development of new materials, such as super-hard materials, electrical superconductors, or intermetallic compounds. Up-to-date physical methods for the characterization of new chemical compounds and materials are also described.

Abstract Half antiperovskites were investigated within the series Sn 2−x In x Co 3 S 2 by X‐ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and DFT band structure calculations. The shandite type structure was confirmed from powder and single crystal diffraction for the studied compounds. Co orders like Ni in the previously studied InNi 3/2 S. SnCo 3/2 S is metrically pseudo cubic and can easily be deduced from the antiperovskite MgCo 3 C. The Curie temperature T c = −97 °C of SnCo 3/2 S was confirmed by calorimetric data. Its electronic structure indicates a spin ${1 \over 2}$ type I A half metallic ground state. Upon In doping the crystal structure becomes hexagonally distorted towards a higher c hex /a hex relation. The Curie temperature rapidly falls below −135 °C for x (In) = 0.4. A metal to semiconductor transition is predicted for ordered InSnCo 3 S 2 from its electronic band structure. For InCo 3/2 S a non magnetic metallic ground state is found.

Half Antiperovskites. III. Crystallographic and Electronic Structure Effects in Sn2−xInxCo3S2

Abstract The crystal structures of the M 2 NaIO 6 series ( M = Ca, Sr, Ba), prepared at 650 °C by ceramic methods, were determined from conventional laboratory X‐ray powder diffraction data. Synthesis and crystal growth were made by oxidizing I – with O 2 (air) to I 7+ followed by crystal growth in the presence of NaF as mineralizator, or by the reaction of the alkali‐metal periodate with the alkaline‐earth metal hydroxide. All three compounds are insoluble and stable in water. The barium compound crystallizes in the cubic space group Fm3m (no. 225) with lattice parameters of a = 8.3384(1) Å, whereas the strontium and calcium compounds crystallize in the monoclinic space group P 2 1 / c (no. 14) with a = 5.7600(1) Å, b = 5.7759(1) Å, c = 9.9742(1) Å, β = 125.362(1)° and a = 5.5376(1) Å, b = 5.7911(1) Å, c = 9.6055(1) Å, β = 124.300(1)°, respectively. The crystal structure consists of either symmetric (for Ba) or distorted (for Sr and Ca) perovskite superstructures. Ba 2 NaIO 6 contains the first perfectly octahedral [IO 6 ] 5– unit reported. The compounds of the ortho ‐periodates are stable up to 800 °C. Spectroscopic measurements as well as DFT calculations show a reasonable agreement between calculated and observed IR‐ and Raman‐active vibrations.

The Periodate‐Based Double Perovskites M2NaIO6 (M = Ca, Sr, and Ba)

Abstract In the present study, we are able to synthesize flakes of the 3R‐polytypes of MoS 2 and WS 2 from sodium molybdate and sodium tungstate in the presence of H 2 S gas by solid‐state reaction. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X‐ray diffraction are utilized to characterize the morphology, structure, and chemical composition of the 3R‐MoS 2 and 3R‐WS 2 flakes. The electrocatalytic and photocatalytic activities of 3R‐MoS 2 and 3R‐WS 2 flakes have been measured in hydrogen evolution reactions.

Synthesis of Highly Crystalline Flakes of 3R‐MoS2 and 3R‐WS2 and Their Electrocatalytic and Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Reactivity

The addition of secondary Mes2P(O)H and of bulky tertiary phosphindole oxide onto TiCl4 leads to formation of trans‐[TiCl4(OPR3)2] 1 and 2. Contrary to this finding, Ti(NMe2)4 metalates secondary dimesitylphosphane oxide and mixtures of the mononuclear complexes [Ti(NMe2)4‐n(OPMes2)n] form. The ratio between the amido and phosphinito ligands varies with the stoichiometry, however, pure compounds are not accessible. Fast ligand exchange reactions interconvert these complexes and only mixtures have been obtained. The reaction of TiCl4 with bidentate alkane‐α,ω‐diyl‐bis(diarylphosphane oxides), Ar2P(O)‐(CH2)n‐P(O)Ar2 with Ar/n = Ph/1 (I), Ph/2 (II), Mes/2 (III)) yields insoluble [(I)2Ti2Cl4(µ‐Cl)2] [Ti2Cl9]2 (3), [(II)2TiCl2] [Ti2Cl9]2 (4), and [(III)2(TiCl3)2] [Ti2Cl9]2 (5) regardless of the applied stoichiometry. All these complexes have the dinuclear [Cl3Ti(µ‐Cl)3TiCl3]‐ anion in common.

Reaction of Mono‐ and Bidentate Phosphane Oxides with TiCl4 and Ti(NMe2)4

Martin Jansen, Professor Emeritus at the Max-Planck-Institute for Solid State Research, was born on Pellworm – a small North Sea island off the north German coast – on November 5th, 1944. Soon he was obliged to leave the island and his family for the Secondary High School at Husum on mainland. In 1966, he started to study chemistry at the University of Gießen, where he obtained his diploma in chemistry, followed by PhD studies on "Oxomanganates and Oxocobaltates of the Alkaline Metals" under the supervision of Rudolf Hoppe. Having completed his doctoral thesis in 1973, he started his independent scientific career with a habilitation "A New Contribution to the Knowledge of Binary and Ternary Oxides" and received the venia legendi in inorganic chemistry in 1978. Soon after his habilitation, he was offered almost simultaneously a professorship at the Technical University of Karlsruhe and the University of Hannover – he chose the latter and became Full Professor in 1981. Only six years later (1987), TH Darmstadt as well as the University of Bonn offered a professorship, where he again chose the latter and moved to Bonn. While ETH Zurich, offering a position in 1988, could not convince him, the Max-Planck-Society was more successful, and Martin Jansen became Director at the Max-Planck-Institute for Solid State Research, Stuttgart, in 1998. After his regular retirement in 2012, Martin Jansen was still active as guest scientist until 2020 at the Max-Planck-Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids, Dresden. Martin Jansen and his scientific work were honored by many awards, among them the Gottfried-Wilhelm-Leibniz Award (1989), the Alfred-Stock Memorial Award (1996), the Karl-Ziegler Award (2007) or the Otto-Hahn Award (2019) as most outstanding examples. His work is highly recognized internationally, which is reflected, for instance, by an honorary membership of the Material Research Society of India, the distinguished lectureship at Texas A&M University, the Centenary Prize of the Royal Society of Chemistry or the Georg-Wittig-Victor-Grignard Award of the Societé Chimique de France. Moreover, he received an honorary doctorate by the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. In scientific terms, Martin Jansen is characterized by the diversity of synthesis strategies, the large number of compounds, the broad range from pure basic research to industrial application, as well as the breadth of methodology and the depth of experimental and theoretical penetration of his research. Martin Jansen has been particularly interested in "simple" binary or pseudo-binary compounds such as ozonides, silver oxides, halogen oxides or orthoanions throughout his entire scientific career. Synthetically, the O2 high-pressure syntheses of low-valence metal oxides, the synthesis of Fullerenes in the high-frequency furnace or the formation of, for instance, Na3N via atomic-beam deposition are perhaps particularly characteristic. Blue color pigments, cadmium-free red-to-yellow color pigments or amorphous Si–B–C–N high-temperature ceramics are examples of successful transfers to industry. The exploration of the nature of chemical bonding such as d10–d10 interactions or the prediction of the existence and structure of inorganic solids without presuppositions demonstrate his theoretically-oriented interest. Around 1400 publications are proof of his productivity and represent an enormous scientific legacy that will continue to inspire chemistry and materials science far beyond Martin Jansen's active career and encourage further research worldwide. One of his guiding principles was and is: "You have to reach for the stars if you want to reach the clouds". Scientifically, Martin Jansen not only reached many clouds but also stars. Besides his scientific achievements, Martin Jansen has been an inspiring academic teacher, mentor and advisor to many of his co-workers. Former PhD students Wolfgang Schnick (Munich), Nikolaus Korber (Regensburg), Barbara R. Albert (Duisburg-Essen), Anja-Verena Mudring (Aarhus), Pascal D. C. Dietzel (Bergen) and myself (Karlsruhe) have continued successful careers as professors themselves. Many former doctoral students are also working in different areas of industry and world-leading companies, surely also inspired by application-oriented projects and intensive cooperation between Martin Jansen and chemical industry. Although there is a clear trend to the south over Martin Jansen's carrier – starting on Pellworm via Gießen to Bonn and Stuttgart with only a short interplay in Hannover – he now prefers to stay with his family in the middle – the Rhine area of Bonn. Of course, he is still active and very interested in all facets of chemistry and good science, and he still is a critical observer with clear arguments who does not allow himself to be deceived by false promises. Together with his students, colleagues and friends, I wish him all the best, good health and continued pleasure with science on his 80th birthday, and I would like to conclude by quoting his words: "The better is always the enemy of the good", an advice that extends beyond optimizing material properties. The nature of Au···Au interactions in poly‐gold complexes has been a fervent field of research since the term ‘aurophilicity’ was coined by H. Schmidbaur in the late 80s. Here we look to address the importance of such interactions in defining the solid‐state geometries of discreet gold‐pnictonium clusters [Pn(Au·PMe3)4]+ (Pn = N‐As), using in‐depth computational methods such as Energy‐Decomposition Analysis and Electron Localization Functions. We find that predicted geometries of simplified congeners of known tetrahedral N and square‐planar As derivatives align with those reported structures, whilst the as‐yet unknown square‐pyramidal geometry is predicted for P. The tetrahedral to square‐pyramidal switch arises from shorter Au···Au contacts in the latter geometry, which allows for increased metal‐metal dispersion interactions, i.e. aurophilic interactions, which overcome the high electrostatic interactions predicted for the same species in the tetrahedral conformation.

On the role of aurophilic interactions in determining geometries in [Pn(AuL)4]+ complexes (Pn = N, P, As)

Rb[SbO(OH)4] was prepared under hydrothermal conditions at pH »10. The crystal structure was determined at ‐173 °C on basis of X‐ray data from a twinned crystal (P21, Z = 2, a = 5.6579(4), b = 7.2961(5), c = 5.6472(5) Å, β = 92.032(6)°; R1 = 0.0309, wR2 = 0.0903 for all data). In comparison with the crystal structures of other alkali hydroxidoantimonates(V), a novel polymeric anion 1µ[SbO2/2(OH)4/1]‐ is present, which is made up of [SbO2(OH)4] octahedra vertex‐sharing the trans‐aligned O atoms. All OH groups act as donor and acceptor groups of inter‐ and intra‐chain hydrogen bonds of moderate strengths. The Rb+ cations are situated between the chains and are bound to twelve O atoms from two O2− and ten OH groups. The dehydration process of Rb[SbO(OH)4] starts at »280 °C and yields RbSbO3 as the final product at 900 °C. Vibrational spectra (IR and Raman) show characteristic bands for the O−H and Sb−O(H) vibrations.

Rb[SbO(OH)4] – a novel structural set‐up for the anion in alkali metal hydroxidoantimonates(V)

Rb[SbO(OH)4] – 一种碱金属氢氧锑酸盐(V)中阴离子的新型结构设置

Four metal complexes 1 : Zn2Cl2L2, 2 : Zn2(CH3OO)2L2·MeCN, 3 : Zn(NO3)2HL, 4 : CdCl2HL were obtained by coordinating the flexible Schiff‐base ligand 4‐amino‐N'‐(di(pyridin‐2‐yl)methylene)benzohydrazide (abbreviated as HL) with the Zn(II) and Cd(II). X‐ray single crystal diffraction confirms that the four complexes 1‐4 employ two different coordination modes. Moreover, the structures of complexes 1 and 2 are accompanied by deproton behavior, and these structural differences not only increase the fluorescence quantum yield but also produce a red shift in fluorescence emission. TD‐DFT calculations confirm that these performance changes are related to the coordination mode and coordination environment. This work not only construct the four fluorescent complexes, but also further deepen the understanding of the structure‐activity relationship between the structure of the complexes and the fluorescence properties.
