Acarologia is a free open-access journal. Please follow the guidelines below when submitting your manuscript to assist us in processing. Descriptions of single species should be based on their scientific interest.

Acarologia

Brazil is the largest world coffee (Coffea spp.) producer. Espírito Santo stands out as the largest Brazilian producing state of Coffea canephora, which is commonly intercropped with papaya (Carica papaya L.) in the first two years of the establishment of the cultivation. The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Tetranychidae), is considered a pest in papaya, but not in coffee crops. We here report an unusual occurrence of this mite on coffee plants, causing significant damage in fields where they are intercropped with papaya in that state. Mites at different developmental stages were found on the underside of young coffee leaves, producing profuse webbing, causing leaf malformation, necrosis and premature fall. The intercrop of papaya with other crops may lead to the need to adopt measures to control the two-spotted spider mite on the associated crop, even when the latter is known as an unfavorable host to this mite species.

Two new parasitid species, Anchigamasus apuseniensis n. sp. and Anchigamasus gardaensis n. sp. collected in Romania and Italy, respectively, are described. Additionally, in Anchigamasus halaskovellus (Athias-Henriot, 1967), a description of an unknown male is provided.

In a survey of natural enemies of Aculops lycopersici (Tryon, 1917), we collected specimens of Homepronematus anconai (Baker, 1943) in different European countries and redescribed the species based on specimens collected in Belgium. The newly collected specimens were measured and morphologically compared with USA specimens available from museum collections. We also measured collections' specimens previously identified as H. staercki from Hungary, and others, previously identified (but undescribed) as Homeopronematus cf. staercki sp. nov. from Serbia. Quasihomeopronematus n. gen., with its type species Quasihomeopronematus nordestinus n. gen. n. sp., are described based on specimens from Brazil. As the name suggests, this genus is similar to the genus Homepronematus. Single female expansion lines were set-up with H. anconai specimens from Belgium, France, Germany and Hungary, and Q. nordestinus specimens from Brazil. With specimens of these lines, molecular analysis was performed to construct a phylogenetic tree including the results of previous studies with Pronematus ubiquitus (McGregor, 1932) and P. duffelensis De Vis and Ueckermann, 2024. The tree showed differences between origins of H. anconai, with one French line standing out. In a PCA analysis on morphological characters, the same French line separated from all other geographical origins albeit with some overlap. The molecular and morphological differences were assigned to intraspecific variation, and we consider all specimens studied as H. anconai. Homepronematus anconai is morphologically different from Q. nordestinus but the latter separated similarly as that one French line from all other H. anconai lines. We conclude that the CO1-gene is not sufficient to separate genera in the family of the pronematinae. The specimens previously identified as H. staercki or Homeopronematus cf. staercki sp. nov. overlap in the PCA analysis with the specimens of H. anconai. Therefore, we synonymise H. staercki with H. anconai. The results are discussed and additionally both species' distribution, habitat, and feeding habits are presented.

Trichomes are a first line of defense of plants against herbivorous arthropods, but they can also act as a barrier against natural enemies hampering biological control programmes. Despite the abundance of trichome types on tomato plants, many herbivorous arthropods can still evade these defenses. Over the past decades, numerous studies have evaluated the impact of tomato trichomes on phytophagous arthropods, yet few have examined their effects on biological control agents. Moreover, studies on the complex tri-trophic interactions among tomato plants, arthropod pests, and natural enemies remain limited, highlighting the need for further research to deepen our understanding of these relationships. Understanding the effects of tomato trichomes on both pests and biological control agents could enhance pest management strategies, informing tomato breeding and biological control programs. To support ongoing research and practical applications, this paper reviews the effects of tomato trichomes on the development of pests, including that of phytophagous mites and their natural enemies, with a particular focus on predatory mites. Current challenges and future directions are discussed.

Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) drori Grinberg and Amitai is redescribed based on female and male specimens collected from Tamarix sp. in Republic of Dagestan, Russia. In addition, T. (A.) tamaricis (Kolodochka), T. (A.) beskaravainyi (Kuznetsov) are proposed as junior synonyms of T. (A.) drori, while T. (A.) eremitidis (Chaudhri, Akbar and Rasool) is considered a potential junior synonym.
