Acta Amazonica is a multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed, open-access scientific journal focused on research related to the Amazon region. Since its inception in 1971, it has been published quarterly by the National Institute of Amazonian Research (INPA) in Brazil. The journal covers a wide range of disciplines, including agriculture and forestry, animal science and fisheries, biodiversity and conservation, biotechnology, chemistry and pharmacology, environmental science, food science, earth sciences, health sciences, humanities and social sciences, and materials technology, featuring articles and brief communications in English.

ABSTRACT A new species of sarcophagid fly, Sarcofahrtiopsis papei sp. nov., is described based on a male specimen from the state of Amazonas in the Brazilian Amazon. It differs from congeners mainly in having the dorsal surface of the basiphallus with a clubbed projection bearing many tiny sclerotized spines. We also report the first record of Sarcofahrtiopsis matthewsi for the Brazilian Amazon.

A new species and a new record of Sarcofahrtiopsis (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) from the Brazilian Amazon

ABSTRACT Growing global concern surrounds microplastics, found in various environments. However, data on microplastics contamination in salted shrimp and associated health risks remain scarce. We analyzed whether salted shrimps sold in markets in a main city in Amazonas state (Brazil), are contaminated with microplastics. We examined 150 specimens of Macrobrachium amazonicum and found 396 potential microplastics in 129 individuals (86%). The number of particles per gram of body mass was highest in the gastrointestinal tract, with 60% of them ranging in size from 1,000 to 5,000 µm, predominantly dark blue fibers (80%). The contamination likely originates from the environment and the salt used during processing in the region where the shrimps are captured. Our findings point to a potential health risk to the many consumers of salted shrimp in the Amazon region.

Is the shrimp Macrobrachium amazonicum sold in an urban center in the central Brazilian Amazon contaminated with microplastics?

ABSTRACT Sponges may be among the worst dispersers in the animal kingdom, however, some freshwater sponges produce resting bodies called gemmules, which have been used as the main explanation for the widespread distribution of some of those organisms. This is the case of Tubella pennsylvanica Potts 1882, which was originally described from Pennsylvania, USA, and is reported with a worldwide distribution but with scarce and confusing information to validate its taxonomy and dispersal mechanism. It has been registered in the Amazon and is the first species of Tubella reported outside the Amazon. In order to confirm the taxonomic status of the occurrences in Brazil, we collected specimens from three sites in the Amazon basin and compared their measurements and characteristics with the type material of T. pennsylvanica. Based on this specimen analysis, we consider all records in Brazil of Tubella pennsylvanica to be a different species, which is here described as Tubella manauara n. sp. In addition, we provide the first images of the spicules of the holotype of Tubella pennsylvanica. The new species differs from the type material of Tubella pennsylvanica by presenting larger spines in the megasclere acanthoxeas, and larger size of the spicules. The specimens of Tubella manauara n. sp show morphological variations according to the type of substrate on which the sponge has developed. This study reinforces the need to review South American freshwater sponge species with distributions that stretch to other continents.

ABSTRACT Finding pathways to more sustainable agriculture and resource use remains the most pressing challenge for Amazonian countries. Characterizing recent changes in the structure and types of agrarian production systems, this review identifies responses to deal with the challenges and opportunities to promote more sustainable production and extraction economies in the Amazon. While regional agriculture and resource economies rest on a rich diversity of producers, knowledge, and production systems, the expansion of agribusiness enterprises has come to dominate the distribution of subsidies, institutional support, and logistical infrastructure. These trends are associated with forest loss and degradation, pollution of waterways, pressures on and/or displacement of indigenous and rural communities, and increased greenhouse gas emissions, all of which undermine ecosystem services. We analyzed the diverse and complex impacts of socio-economic and hydro-climatic changes on livelihoods, environments and biodiversity in Amazonian countries, with a more in-depth focus on changes in key agrarian production systems in the Brazilian Amazon using agrarian census data from 1995, 2006, and 2017. The quantitative analysis is complemented by a qualitative and empirically grounded discussion that provides insights into the changes and impacts of different activities, how they are interlinked, and how they differ across Amazonian countries. Finally, we provide recommendations towards promoting adaptive, profitable, and more sustainable smallholder production and management systems that reduce deforestation and support local communities and economies in the context of increasing urbanization and climate change.

Complex, diverse and changing agribusiness and livelihood systems in the Amazon

ABSTRACT This review discusses observed hydroclimatic trends and future climate projections for the Amazon. Warming over this region is a fact, but the magnitude of the warming trend varies depending on the datasets and length of the analyzed period. The warming trend has been more evident since 1980 and has further enhanced since 2000. Long-term trends in climate and hydrology are assessed. Various studies have reported an intensification of the hydrological cycle and a lengthening of the dry season in the southern Amazon. Changes in floods and droughts, mainly due to natural climate variability and land use change, are also assessed. For instance, in the first half of the 20th century, extreme flood events occurred every 20 years. Since 2000, there has been one severe flood every four years. During the last four decades, the northern Amazon has experienced enhanced convective activity and rainfall, in contrast to decreases in convection and rainfall in the southern Amazon. Climate change in the Amazon will have impacts at regional and global scales. Significant reductions in rainfall are projected for the eastern Amazon.

Long-term variability, extremes and changes in temperature and hydrometeorology in the Amazon region: A review

ABSTRACT Amazonia (defined herein as the Amazon basin) is home to the greatest concentration of biodiversity on Earth, providing unique genetic resources and ecological functions that contribute to ecosystem services globally. The lengthy and complex evolutionary history of this region has produced heterogeneous landscapes and riverscapes at multiple scales, altered the geographic and genetic connections among populations, and impacted rates of adaptation, speciation, and extinction. In turn, ecologically diverse Amazonian biotas promoted further diversification, species coexistence, and coevolution, with biodiversity accumulating over tens of millions of years. Important events in Amazonian history included: (i) late Cretaceous and early Paleogene origin of major rainforest plant and animal groups; (ii) Eocene-Oligocene global cooling with rainforests contracting to tropical latitudes separating Atlantic coastal and Amazonian rainforests; (iii) Miocene uplift of central and northern Andes that separated Pacific coastal and Amazonian rainforests, spurred formation of mega-wetlands in the western Amazon, and contributed to the origin of the modern transcontinental Amazon River; (iv) late Neogene formation of the Panamanian Isthmus that facilitated the Great American Biotic Interchange; (v) Pleistocene climate oscillations followed by late Pleistocene-Holocene human colonization and megafaunal extinctions; and (vi) modern era of widespread anthropogenic deforestation, defaunation, and ecological transformations of regional landscapes and global climates. Amazonian conservation requires decade-scale investments into biodiversity documentation and monitoring to leverage existing scientific capacity, and strategic habitat planning to allow continuity of evolutionary and ecological processes now and into the future.
