The 48th congress of the Australian and New Zealand Association for the advancement of science was held at Melbourne University from August 29th to September 2nd, and optometry again constituted its own section and presented a programme of free papers and symposia.

Senile Macular Degeneration (SMD) can be detected and the progression of the disease monitored by the assessment and measurement of a number of visual functions. Considerable research has been conducted during the past ten years, much of it in Australia, on the pathogenesis of senile macular degeneration and its effects on different visual functions. 
	The purpose of this paper is to review the standard clinical tests used for the diagnosis of senile macular degeneration, to examine the use of these tests in low vision assessment with particular regard to SMD and, in the light of recent research, to recommend other tests which add to the evaluation of the visual characteristics of SMD. Those tests which can best indicate the rehabilitation needs of the person with SMD are stressed.

Assessment of visual functions of patients with senile macular degeneration

This paper describes the Humphrey Vision Analyser (HVA) which is a subjective refracting instrument incorporating the unique principles of 'remote refraction' and continuously variable topics. Increased versatility can be obtained by connecting the HVA to the Humphrey Lens Analyser, forming an over-refraction system. A brief evaluation is presented.

It is a well established fact that older persons require higher levels of illumination to meet their visual needs, than do younger people. However, most interior lighting standards pay little attention to the needs of older persons. These standards give few recommendations for domestic lighting and rarely does illumination in homes meet the recommended levels. This paper discusses the role of the optometrist in the assessment of the response of older patients to illuminance levels and presents information which can help the optometrist better advise older persons on their domestic lighting requirements.

The ophthalmoscopic appearance of the optic disc is reviewed in relation to the pathogenesis of optic atrophy and the angioarchitecture of the optic nerve head. Colour of the optic disc alone is an unreliable criterion for the presence of optic atrophy, the clinical diagnosis of which can be made only when disc signs are accompanied by loss of visual or ocular function. In addition to ophthalmoscopic and functional examination, clinical investigation must include the evaluation of circumstantial and neurological evidence. Temporal optic atrophy, of which dominantly inherited juvenile optic atrophy is an example, usually presents great difficulty for detection because of its subtle ophthalmoscopic appearance. The manner in which comprehensive clinical examination can compensate for minimal ophthalmoscopic signs in temporal optic atrophy is illustrated by the findings in three families with dominantly inherited juvenile optic atrophy.

Eye examinations by optometrists and ophthalmologists can be aided by both human and computer assistants for an ultimate lower cost and greater availability. A time study of practising optometrists is used to indicate how the assistants can best be used and the time savings gained. The relative roles of optometry and ophthalmology in visual care may be affected by the general use of human and computer assistants.

Some ophthalmic aids and their efficacy in establishing a more normal visual state in homonymous hemianopia are discussed. In particular special attention is given to awareness of objects in the affected field and the visual problems involved in any attempt to read. The neuropathology of the condition is also outlined and two case reports are given.
