Background: This study aims to explore the epidemiological patterns of shoulder injuries in professional baseball.Methods: The transaction lists of the 'Major League Baseball' website were screened for injuries from 2011 to 2016, inclusive. Only players that were placed on the 'Disabled List' were included in the study. Our database included the player's position, injury location, injury cause, and time spent on the Disabled List.Results: A total of 3090 injuries were recorded; 511 (17%) were shoulder injuries, making it the most vulnerable anatomic location in baseball (N = 511). Of the 511 shoulder injuries, 132 (25.8%) were due to inflammation, making it the most common cited cause of shoulder injury. Most shoulder injuries occurred in April with 125 (24%) injuries, while June and May came in second and third with 89 (17%) and 81 (16%) injuries, respectively. The pitcher was the player most prone to injury, as it constituted 78% of the injuries. The average time spent off by a shoulder injury was 69 days, which implicated substantial economic losses for the injured athlete's club.Conclusion: Shoulder injuries are prevalent in professional baseball. The overhead pitching motion puts the shoulder at risk and accounts for the high incidence of its injuries.

The Association of Depressive Symptoms with Prediabetes versus Diagnosed Diabetes: Is Ignorance Really Bliss?

To compare concussion incidence in male and female soccer players due to the specific concussion-causing activity.PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were searched for studies published between January 2000 and February 2020. Search terms included 'sex,' 'gender,' 'sex differences,' 'brain injury,' 'sports,' 'athletes,' 'incidence,' 'epidemiology,' 'symptoms,' and 'injury rate.' Studies that contained data on concussion incidence in soccer and featured comparisons by sex and soccer activity were included. Studies that were not written in English, contained data on non-sports-related concussions, or were conference abstracts were excluded.Six studies were included in this meta-analysis, each of which contributed the number of concussions in males and females for a specific soccer activity. Concussion incidence rates were calculated using athlete-exposures as the denominator and a rate ratio was measured by dividing the concussion rate among female soccer players by the rate among male soccer players. Female soccer players were shown to have a greater rate of concussions from heading [1.65 (95% CI: 1.35, 2.03, p < 0.001)] and goalkeeping [1.63 (95% CI: 1.22, 2.17, p = 0.001)]. There were 3 studies comparing sex differences for general play. While the pooled rate ratio was statistically significant [1.51 (95% CI: 1.12, 2.04), p = 0.007], this result was largely driven by 1 study.Concussion incidence rates were significantly higher in female soccer players compared to male players while heading. There is also some evidence to suggest that the incidence is higher for female goalkeepers. Soccer coaches and health care providers need to recognize this sex difference when coaching or treating players.

Impact of anterior cruciate ligament tears on player efficiency ratings and salary in national basketball association over the past 20 years: a retrospective case control study

The 2017 USA Gymnastics (USAG) scandal, which revealed that Dr. Larry Nassar, head team physician for US gymnastics, sexually abused countless gymnasts, is one of the most widely recognized cases of sexual abuse in youth sports. Not only did Nassar abuse elite US gymnasts, but he also abused many student-athletes at Michigan State University. USAG and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) acted and began implementing the SafeSport training program to educate athletes, coaches, and staff about how to recognize and prevent abuse; however, similar training has not yet been implemented within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and other major sports governing bodies in the United States.Citation5,Citation8,Citation12 The purpose of this review was to examine the current recommendations for preventing abuse put in place by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and discuss how sports organizations can continue to improve on existing frameworks for reporting non-accidental violence in sports. A combination of current IOC guidelines and existing trauma frameworks for abuse prevention could be an effective way to implement a centralized reporting framework for the NCAA in order to protect athletes. This would open up avenues for preventing perpetrator migration across sports, as well as creating an environment that has athlete safety as the highest priority.
