Online group-buying business has existed in American and European online marketplaces since the late 1990s. Consumers with similar purchase interests are congregated on group-buying websites to obtain group discounts. In the last decade, group-buying business models have evolved to adapt to consumer needs, and a number of studies have offered several insights into how to improve online group-buying. This paper begins with a description of the global development of group-buying websites and an overview of the group-buying business models. Next, it provides a comprehensive overview of the existing literature in the online group-buying research field. Building on this review, the paper presents a meta-theoretical framework toward the sustainability of group-buying and provides research directions to guide future studies on online group-buying.

IS researchers and practitioners frequently claim that the 'digital mindset' is essential to achieving high employee performance and satisfaction and to leveraging opportunities in the context of pervasive digital innovation. However, extant literature has yet to provide a scale to measure the digital mindset in quantitative research. This study fills this gap by addressing the question of how the digital mindset can be measured. We conduct three studies to answer the research question and develop and validate a measurement model. In Study 1, we take literature-based and Delphi study-based approaches to create two types of scales, which we pre-validate through experts and purify through pilot tests. Study 2 undertakes confirmatory factor analyses (N = 147 and 142) to test the scales and three multidimensional conceptualizations of the digital mindset. Finally, Study 3 validates the criteria by testing the predictive ability of the model of IT mindfulness (N = 147 and 142) and by comparing the scales to the results of an interview-based approach measuring the digital mindset in a panel study (N = 42). Our results provide two newly developed and validated 39-item survey scales to assess the digital mindset that reflect an overall model of digital mindset based on agile, digital, and creative cognition, each of which contains several thinking patterns.

Measuring the Digital Mindset: Development and Validation of a Multidimensional Scale

How different public agencies and their digital artifacts work together (often labeled as interoperability) is considered to be an important area for a successful evolution of e-government. Key knowledge in this area is the structuring into four different layers of interoperability: legal, organizational, semantic, and technical interoperability. This paper challenges this received view of digital interoperation. It does so through an in-depth qualitative case study on the management of digital medical certificates and an inductive and abductive data analysis. Twelve aspects of digital interoperation have emerged through this study. The aspects have been divided into two categories: intrinsic (aspects that directly relate to the digital transfer of information) and extrinsic (aspects that shape different parts of digital interoperation from the outside). Six intrinsic aspects have been identified (relational, performative, semantic, informational, architectural, and technical). These intrinsic categories also have roles as extrinsic. Besides these, there are six more extrinsic aspects (normative, regulative, economic, cognitive, interactive, and temporal). Based on empirical insights and theorizing, the paper argues for a broadening of interoperability as not only the capability to interoperate. A broader notion comprises a mix of organizational, human, and digital pre-conditions for interoperation.

Aspects of E-Government Interoperation: Case Study Research for Discovery Beyond Interoperability as Layered Capability

Roy Bhaskar's critical realism (CR) has become a popular metatheoretical foundation in information systems (IS) research. CR is often framed as a "third way" or a "middle ground" between positivism and interpretivism. In this essay, I deconstruct this third way rhetoric of the CR discourse into four argumentative steps: 1) IS research must be based on a metatheoretical foundation; 2) positivism and interpretivism are the only two choices for such foundation, but both are unsatisfactory; 3) critical realism solves this tension as a middle ground between the two alternatives; and 4) critical realism is superior to its alternatives and thus the only sensible choice. I problematize each of these steps. The contribution of this essay is to illuminate the seductiveness of the "third way" framing: it hides more than it reveals.

The Philosopher's Corner: Questioning the Third Way Rhetoric of Critical Realism

In this editorial, we define discrimination in the context of AI algorithms by focusing on understanding the biases arising throughout the lifecycle of building algorithms: input data for training, the process of algorithm development, and algorithm execution and usage. We draw insights from a few empirical studies to illustrate biases codified in algorithms that could result in harmful outcomes. We call on information systems scholars to prioritize scholarship in the area of algorithmic discrimination that can help generate new knowledge systems that would help safeguard against widespread and unaccountable harm.

AI and Discrimination: Sources of Algorithmic Biases

Information technology (IT)-business alignment continues to be a challenge for businesses. A potential reason may be the absence of relevant IT leadership capable of engaging IT and business units in a way that leads to alignment. Based on the knowledge integration view of organizations and the strategic leadership literature, we propose a model linking chief information officer (CIO) leadership style to IT-business alignment. We examine how ambidextrous CIO leadership behavior influences IT-business alignment through knowledge integration mechanisms, namely mechanisms that develop shared domain knowledge between IT and business specialists and mechanisms for collaborative integration of specialized IT and business knowledge. Analysis of cross-industry data collected from CIOs, top management team members, and IT specialists indicates that CIOs who can display both transformational and transactional leadership promote these mediating mechanisms. Moreover, the results show that these mechanisms have a substitutive effect, in that the effect of one mechanism diminishes when the other exists at a high level.
