Total nonfarm employment in the United States continued to expand in 2023, with most industry sectors showing slower growth than in the prior 2 years. Over-the-year job gains were led by government and by private education and health services, while job losses occurred in information and in transportation and warehousing.

Total employment is projected to grow by 4.0 percent and add 6.7 million jobs from 2023 to 2033, increasing from 167.8 million to 174.6 million. Around half of projected job gains are expected to be in the healthcare and social assistance and professional, scientific, and technical services sectors, driving demand for related healthcare and computer and mathematical occupations. Retail trade is the only sector projected to lose jobs over the period.

Improving estimates of hours worked for U.S. productivity measurement

The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) use estimates of depreciation rates for structures and equipment to construct estimates of capital stock from data on capital investments. The depreciation rates are based on research by Frank C. Wykoff and Charles R. Hulten from the 1980s. More recent studies by Statistics Canada, from 2007 and 2015, use Canadian data on used asset transactions from Canada’s Annual Capital and Repair Expenditures Survey of establishments. They found faster depreciation rates, especially for structures. Sheharyar Bokhari and David Geltner’s 2019 study of U.S. used asset prices also found faster depreciation rates for structures. To illustrate the potential effects of implementing these estimates from newer studies, we created a concordance to match Canadian to U.S. asset categories. We reestimated BEA capital stock measures and the BLS capital and total factor productivity (TFP) measures using depreciation rates based on the Canadian Annual Capital and Repair Expenditures Survey. Using these faster depreciation rates results in substantially lower estimates of net capital stocks and higher estimates of depreciation in BEA accounts but has minimal effects on growth rates of TFP in the BLS accounts.

Alternative capital asset depreciation rates for U.S. capital and total factor productivity measures

Using data from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, this article explores a new measure of labor market concentration as well as how labor market concentration affects wages. In 2023, the average U.S. labor market was highly concentrated among employers according to federal antitrust review guidelines, and highly concentrated labor markets accounted for more than 15 percent of private sector employment and payrolls. Higher employer concentration is found to be significantly associated with lower wages, suggesting that concentration diminishes the bargaining power of workers. This article also simulates the impact of firm mergers on market concentration and wages, finding that mergers could significantly impact market power in thousands of local-level labor markets.

This article discusses national trends for job openings, hires, and separations throughout 2023. Separations are broken down further into quits, layoffs and discharges, and other separations. Among industries, churn rates (hires rates plus separations rates) and job openings rates are examined and analyzed. Next, establishment size class data are presented at the total private level, and the article concludes with a brief look at state data, specifically state job openings compared with unemployment.
