Pan-sharpening is the process of combining high-resolution panchromatic and low-resolution multispectral images to generate a high-resolution multispectral image. However, some pan-sharpening methods have poor preservation of spectral and spatial information. In this context, the aim of this study is to improve the pan-sharpening method based on a convolutional autoencoder and a guided filter (CAE-GF), by developing a new Convolutional Autoencoder (CAE) network. A CAE network was designed and trained to generate original panchromatic images from their spatially degraded versions. The trained network was used to improve the spatial details of the intensity component of the multispectral image obtained through the adaptive intensity-hue-saturation (AIHS) method. The pan-sharpening process is achieved by applying the multi-scale guided filter to improve the original PAN image using the enhanced intensity component and by injecting the detail map into the multispectral image. To analyze the preservation of the spectral and spatial information in the proposed method, full-reference and no-reference quality indices were calculated, and a visual analysis was performed. These analyses were compared with traditional pan-sharpening methods of component substitution. The results showed the developed method’s efficacy in generating Pan-sharpened QuickBird images.

An Improved Pan-Sharpening Method Based on Convolutional Autoencoder and Guided Filter (CAE-GF) on Quickbird Images

Through the use of two indices estimated from measurements of the humerus and ulna, we suggested the possible ecological habit of the extinct porcupine Coendou magnus Lund, 1839 from the Late Pleistocene in the Brazilian Intertropical Region. The analyzed specimen was found in Toca da Barriguda cave (Campo Formoso/BA, Brazil), weighed 9 kg, and lived in a low-density forest at 33,171-33,765 cal yr BP. All extant species of the Coendou genus are suspensory, and these indices suggest the same ecological habit for C. magnus.

Ecological Habit Inferences of the Extinct Porcupine Coendou magnus Lund, 1839 (Rodentia, Erethizontidae) from Brazilian Intertropical Region

The properties of minerals used as gemstones could help or even reveal new aspects about the geological evolution of the region where a mineral was found. The objective of this study was the gemological characterization and acquisition of chemical data on staurolites from the city of Casa Nova (Bahia, Brazil). The gemological data are within the normal range for the staurolite mineral, except for the absence of pleochroism, above-average densities in two specimens, and a rare color (intense red) in a sample. The intrinsic part of these gems is in possible correlations involving their properties, such as: color, refractive index, birefringence, relative density, and the amounts of FeO in the samples. The geochemistry of these samples is unusual; FeO and MgO appear in considerably above-average quantities, and Al2O3 is up to 8% below average; the presence of CaO is also rare. Therefore, staurolites from Casa Nova (Bahia) have the potential to be used as gemstones, and their geochemistry combined with the gemology of these samples is a great indication for further studies.

Gemology and Geochemistry of Staurolites from the Casa Nova Region, Brazil

This article is a case study to analyze the synoptic and climatological aspects of an heat wave in Rio de Janeiro, located in the Southeast Region of Brazil, during November 2023. This work aims to investigate whether the high temperatures recorded on November 17 and 18, 2023, during a concert of an American singer, could be considered an extreme weather event. On the first day of the concert, the 17th, many people fell ill due to the extreme heat, and a 23-year-old female died, a victim of cardiorespiratory arrest caused by thermal exhaustion. On November 18, 11 meteorological stations recorded a maximum temperature (TX) equal to or over 40 °C, and the highest TX in the city was 43.5 °C. At a station located in the coldest area of the city, the highest TX (39.6ºC) in its entire historical record (1967-2023) was also recorded on the 18th. Such extremely high temperatures occurred during a prefrontal situation and at the end of a heat wave that lasted eight days. Analysis of the diurnal cycle of the air temperature on the 17th and 18th indicated that the minimum temperature (TN) was about 5 to 6 °C above its climatology; the TX was approximately 13 °C above its climatological value, and high temperatures lasted all afternoon. On the 18th, the Heat Index reached 55.1 ºC at 14:00 and 15:00 LT, characterizing a state of medical emergency during seven hours. In terms of climate, in addition to the increase in intensity and frequency of warm extremes over the city, the El Niño phenomenon (EN) was configured in the Pacific Ocean from April 2023 to May 2024, causing a drier and warmer spring in Southeast Brazil. This concert represented a milestone for the city regarding the need for local public policies to regulate massive crowd-gathering events during heat wave episodes. Finally, it is possible to state that the event was extreme, caused by the combination of a heat wave, in a prefrontal situation, during an EN event, and in a context of climate change.

Case Study of an Extreme Heat Wave in Rio de Janeiro on November 2023: Synoptic Conditions and Climatological Trends

In this study, we refined the identification of a giant sloth molariform tooth previously attributed to indeterminate Mylodontinae, which was found in the tank deposit of Fazenda Elefante, Gararu municipality (Sergipe, Brazil). The mesiodistal and vestibulolingual diameters, as well as the index between the mesiodistal and vestibulolingual diameters of tooth LPUFS 1852, were compared with the measurements obtained from caniniforms and first and second molariforms of juvenile and adult individuals of Ocnotherium giganteum, Glossotherium phoenesis, and Mylodonopis ibseni. Based on this comparison, we attributed tooth LPUFS 1852 to the right first lower molariform of a juvenile individual of Mylodonopsis ibseni. This identification represents the fifth record of this taxon, which has been recorded in Lagoa Santa/MG, Toca dos Ossos (Ourolândia/Bahia), Gruta dos Brejões (Morro do Chapéu/BA), Fazenda Elefante (Gararu/SE), and Lagoa Tanque (Afrânio/PE).

New Record of the Giant Ground Sloth Mylodonopsis ibseni Cartelle, 1991 in the Late Pleistocene of Brazilian Intertropical Region

Since the end of the 20th century, it has become extremely common for countries with a significant exploration of gemstones to catalog and disclose the properties of their gems for various purposes. This paper aimed to analyze the gemological characterization and geochemical aspects of aquamarines from the County region of the city of Quixeramobim (State of Ceara). Usual gemology equipment was used; in addition, we used a scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive system (SEM-EDS). The studied minerals have the standard characteristics of aquamarines from different parts of the world, except for above-average birefringence and the presence of fluorescence. In the case of Quixeramobim aquamarine studied, a linear correlation was noted involving the geochemistry and some gemological aspects. However, the studied gems diverge in four characteristics and chemical elements, if compared to the aquamarines of a nearby region, named Berilândia (CE). This demonstrates the importance of gemological characterization, not only at a state/regional level. The Quixeramobim aquamarines are unique within the Brazilian scenario.
