Effective construction site layout planning is imperative for ensuring the productivity and safety of construction operations during the various phases of a project. Contrary to previous studies where the focus has been merely on the location decisions of operating facilities, this study examines the site layout planning problem from the perspective of incorporating planning considerations for on-land traffic assignment on site. The site layout planning problem is thus solved by accounting for location decisions, on-land material handling equipment choices, and traffic assignment on the site's ground during construction. A sustainable site layout is ensured through minimizing noise pollution measured at noise-sensitive receivers located around the construction site, minimizing the cost of the layout adopted, as well as minimizing the total travel time of on-land equipment traversing between the positioned temporary facilities. The problem is initially formulated as a bi-level model and then later reformulated into a single-level model based on a justified relaxation. To handle the multi-objective nature of the resulting problem, the augmented ϵ-constraint approach is utilized to generate the non-dominated Pareto front. Applied to a realistic case, the results of the proposed bi-level model demonstrate that errors of up to 55% in total system travel time can be avoided when traffic assignment on-site is considered.

The building industry is using a considerable amount of resources, but if the life cycle of the material on site is closely examined, it is generally known that there is a relatively large portion of the materials being wasted because of poor material control on building sites. The problem of material wastage is not an isolated issue on construction sites. It is also an environmental concern. Hong Kong is running out of both reclamation sites and landfill space for the disposal of construction & demolition (C&D) waste. Many resources can be conserved and the amount of C&D waste required to be disposed of should be greatly reduced if better management of materials is practiced on building sites. This paper reports on a recent study conducted in Hong Kong relating to material control on construction sites with high‐rise multi‐storey buildings. In the paper, the causes of building waste are identified and the wastage levels of various trades for public housing and private residential projects in Hong Kong are quantified. The role of material control in reducing building waste is then discussed in details under three headings, namely design, material procurement and handling, and site management and practices.

AbstractDespite widespread claims about the benefits of social procurement, there is little robust evidence that emerging social procurement policies are achieving their intended outcomes. Addressing this gap in research, this paper presents a case study of a theoretically informed and methodologically robust evaluative social return on investment (SROI) analysis of a construction training initiative developed in Wales to reduce the risk of youth homelessness. Utilising Sen and Nussbaum's Capability Empowerment Approach, the results contribute to social procurement research by providing much needed empirical legitimacy to an under theorised field. Abstract Technology application is deemed an effective way to further construction safety management. Various technologies have been adopted for construction safety, including information communication technology (ICT), sensor-based technology, 3S (GIS/GPS/RS) technology, radio frequency identification (RFID) and virtual reality. A review of previous studies in the area of technology applications for construction safety would be indispensable for the main stakeholders in this field to share innovative research findings and gain access to future research trends. A three-step method was used to obtain relevant publications (119 papers met the ultimate selection criteria) and compile a database of the findings. The results present a general review of technology application for construction safety from the aspects of number of papers published annually, publication type, publication name, country/region of distribution, research level, project phase and project type. Corresponding analysis was performed with the collected data and the radar chart was used for analysing the trend of technology application for construction safety and the trend of research topics. Five research gaps were identified in the review process. The trends and gaps can serve as motivation for researchers and practitioners to work on the next generation of studies and the development of future effective measures, which can ensure a safe construction environment. Restoring residential buildings following earthquake damage requires a significant level of resources. Being able to predict these resource requirements in advance and accurately improves the effectiveness of disaster preparedness and subsequent recovery activities. This research explored how the latest ML algorithms could be used for antecedent earthquake loss modelling. A cost database for repairing residential buildings damaged by the Emilia Romagna earthquake in Italy was analysed using six state-of-the-art ML models to explore their ability to predict repair cost rates(cost per floor area) for a domestic building damaged by earthquakes. A Gradient Boost Regression model outperformed five other models in predicting earthquake damage repair cost rate. The performance of this model was significantly accurate and covers about 76% of the cases. A further SHAP analysis revealed that operational level, damage level and non-housing area of the buildings as top 3 important features when predicting the resultant damage repair cost rate. Overall this research advanced antecedent earthquake loss modelling approaches to increase the accuracy of estimates by incorporating more variables than the widely used damage level based simple methodology.

Machine learning application to disaster damage repair cost modelling of residential buildings

The accuracy of productivity estimates remains a significant challenge due to limited data availability. This research addresses the need for precise productivity estimation in construction by integrating data augmentation techniques, onsite time study data, and Building Information Modeling (BIM) for automated quantity take-offs and design complexity analysis of steel connections. By examining design complexity, the method provides productivity estimates for project zones, sequences, and individual components, improving overall production management. Four data augmentation techniques—normal noise, interpolation, clustering, and Bayesian Linear Regression—were evaluated to enhance time study data. The augmented dataset was used to train an Artificial Neural Network, validated through case studies. The study identified the normal noise method as the most effective, significantly improving time estimation accuracy. Specifically, the proposed approach yielded a 58%–71% enhancement over current industry estimates and a 2.1%–31.1% improvement compared to models without data augmentation. This research enables managers to optimize resource allocation and reduce potential project delays.

Emerging international markets are frequently characterized by high levels of economic and political uncertainty. Such inherent uncertainties render established ideas of competitive positioning problematic. An alternative perspective is developed which focuses on the day-to-day enactment of strategy through the medium of narrative. Narrative interviews with senior managers from Turkish international contracting firms provide insights into the contested storylines of strategy making. The plot structures mobilized are seen to comprise strategy making "in flight". Senior managers are further held continuously to test emergent narratives against different audiences for the purposes of enhancing their persuasiveness. The aim is to instil an overall sense of coherence and direction among those with whom they interact. The temporal narratives mobilize epic plot structures from the past for the purposes of ascribing Turkish contractors with heroic identities in their quest for a desirable future. Yet the shared narratives also serve as a means of identity work through which the narrators strive to position themselves within their networks as acknowledged strategy makers. The espoused plot structures are further seen to coalesce to form a narrative infrastructure with direct implications for the future enactment of strategy. The research focus on the essential temporality of strategy narratives has important implications beyond the specific context of enquiry.
