The ‘smartphone addiction’ is a popular theme in media. It has number of clear behavioural changes in addicts’ life and some of these aspects are yet to get due research attention. The present study identifies antecedents of smartphone addiction and its associated conflicts. The findings are based on data collected from adolescents, who are major targets for smartphone advertising and also vulnerable to addictions. The findings established ‘loneliness’ and ‘self-regulation’ as the main antecedents for smartphone addiction along with family, personal conflicts and poor academic performance as the significant negative consequences of its excessive use. The study findings would help to create awareness and offer insights for developing effective interventions for addressing smartphone addiction amongst adolescents. The planners, regulatory and administrative authorities will use the study findings to formulate measures that would promote positive coping mechanism to prevent smartphone addiction among adolescents.

Smartphone addiction and associated consequences: role of loneliness and self-regulation

ABSTRACTLearning approaches enhanced by digital technologies have gained considerable attention in higher education. Prior research has mainly focused on digital technology adoption in formal learning settings of higher education. Yet, empirical research into discerning what influences a student's digital informal learning has not been well investigated. This paper proposes that individuals' digital competence affects their digital informal learning (DIL) intention and actual behaviour. To understand better learners' DIL and the effects of digital competence, we integrated digital competence into the decomposed theory of planned behaviour (DTPB) model and tested the model by using survey data from university students in Belgium. Here, we have explored different aspects of their DIL behaviours of cognitive, meta-cognitive, social and motivational learning. The findings showed both attitudinal factors in DTPB and digital competence adequately explained students' DIL. Finally, the roles of digital competence and other DPTB factors are discussed in students' DIL.

Exploring students’ digital informal learning: the roles of digital competence and DTPB factors

In the burgeoning landscape of metaverse gaming, understanding player behaviour and preferences is crucial for both academic and practical applications. This study delves into the dynamic realm of metaverse gaming, exploring the influence of various factors on user satisfaction and continuance intention. The primary purpose was to examine the roles of self-expression, challenge and achievement, social interaction, violence catharsis, and game difficulty in shaping player experiences in the metaverse. Employing Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) as the analytical method, the study analysed responses from 171 metaverse game users. The findings revealed intriguing patterns: while self-expression significantly impacts continuance intention, it does not affect immediate satisfaction. Challenge and achievement enhance satisfaction but not continuance intention, emphasizing the complex relationship between these constructs. Social interaction emerged as a critical factor positively influencing both satisfaction and continuance intention. Contrary to popular belief, violence catharsis did not significantly affect either satisfaction or continuance intention. Additionally, increased game difficulty was found to negatively impact both satisfaction and continuance intention. Satisfaction was shown to drive continuance intention. These insights bear significant implications for game developers and marketers, highlighting the need for nuanced game design strategies that emphasize social interaction and balanced challenges.

The demographic shift marks the beginning of a social transformation with far reaching implications, and differences in aging processes across individuals render one-size fits-all policies ineffective. An area of increasing importance is assistive technology, including physical and Social Assistance Robots (SARs) for elderly support. In order to increase the effectiveness of such technologies, their design, functionality, and acceptance by target users must be evaluated. This paper presents a study that examines SAR technology acceptance among the future elderly (aged 20–60) in a German-speaking population (N=188). In doing this, we investigated the relationships between personality, resilience, technology experience, expectations for technology, fulfilment of expectations for technology, and technology acceptance. The study found significant correlations between age, gender, education, personality, resilience, experience, expectations, and technology acceptance and its subdimensions. Of the personality dimensions, agreeableness and neuroticism were found most relevant. Small effects were found between resilience and acceptance, and highly significant ones between technology acceptance, technology experience, expectations for SARs, and fulfilment of expectations for SARs. In keeping with previous research, the findings suggest that personality plays a significant role in the acceptance of SAR technologies. This study may be one of the first that considers and evaluates resilience as a factor in technology acceptance.

The developing research area of digital nudges has garnered increasing attention over the past decade. However, with the acceleration of technological change, there is a need to identify how digital nudges are evolving with changing digital environments. For example, digital choice architectures can be personalised with algorithms, dark nudges, and real-time data. This paper presents a systematic narrative literature review on the evolution of digital nudges. The investigation for this review uncovered several themes, including subsets of digital nudges such as AI-powered nudges and dark nudges, as well as calls for ethics, transparency, and accountability when employing digital nudges. The findings provide a basis for a revised definition of digital nudges, a taxonomy wheel that clarifies relationships between digital nudge terminology, and valuable insights for practitioners to consider when designing and implementing digital nudges.

Digital nudges: a systematic narrative review and taxonomy

In this study, we aim to gain a comprehensive understanding of factors that precede and follow very rich system usage within the specific use context of a contemporary IS. Based on in-depth review of literature and analysis of prior studies, we propose a conceptual research model that links comprehensiveness of usage, very rich system usage, use behaviour, and continuance usage moderated by habit. We empirically evaluate the research model using longitudinal data collected over two periods from users of video conferencing applications. The study findings suggest that very rich system usage is pivotal to explain IS continuance usage, but that the comprehensiveness of usage and very rich usage is context specific and tied to the technological functionalities of the information systems in use.

Very rich usage of information systems: a longitudinal study of video conferencing applications

The rise of fake news and misinformation in the digital age poses serious risks for individuals and society, particularly during crises like the Israel-Hamas war, the Russian-Ukraine war, or the COVID-19 pandemic. Misinformation serves as a tool to manipulate public opinion and create discord. Vulnerability to manipulation increases in online spaces during crises, where authoritative information is scarce. Emergency management, public health, political and public administration, as well as media professionals and citizens express concern and seek solutions to enhance information quality during such critical times. This article highlights user-centred approaches to countering fake news and misinformation, tracing their historical evolution from ancient Greece to the present, focussing on their relevance during the COVID-19 crisis and in contemporary information warfare. It describes the vulnerability of audiences to misinformation and outlines prevailing trends in user-centred countermeasures. This article also introduces recent research on the effectiveness of media literacy interventions on truth discernment, a cross-cultural comparison of the perception of negative consequences and the injunctive norm, a comparison of video and text to promote lateral reading in adolescents, content-specific indicators on Twitter from a user perspective, a learning system for detecting misinformation as well as ethical and security considerations in automated detection.
