Nineteenth-Century French Studies provides scholars and students with the opportunity to examine new trends, review promising research findings, and become better acquainted with professional developments in the field. Scholarly articles on all aspects of nineteenth-century French literature and criticism are invited. Published articles are peer reviewed to ensure scholarly integrity. This journal has an extensive book review section covering a variety of disciplines. Nineteenth-Century French Studies is published twice a year in two double issues, fall/winter and spring/summer.

Abstract: This essay discusses how the figure of “the end of the world” is used in one of Mallarmé’s early prose poems, “Le Phénomène futur.” While this poem has often been read as an exposition of Mallarmé’s aesthetic ideal, I argue that it is informed by a complex conflict between two modes of writing the end of the world, one aestheticizing and apocalyptic and the other sharply prosaic. In the wake of Baudelaire’s reading of the poem, I analyse how Mallarmé’s poetics of the ellipse resist the dramatization of the end of the world as a sublime event, and I discuss what conceptions of poetic form emerge from that conflict. Abstract: Still relatively overlooked, Johnelle by Alfred Mercier is an intriguing meditation on societal collapse and resilience. Shaped by Mercier’s personal experiences and political leanings, the novel delves into motherhood, fatherhood, heredity, and mental illness, and links infanticide to the demise of Francophone Creole culture. It positions female characters as pivotal to Louisiana’s future, contrasting them with male figures whose relevance fades in the aftermath of the American Civil War. This essay examines how Mercier challenged nineteenth-century literary conventions by using gender both as a narrative device and an ontological framework. To a white, crumbling patriarchy, he opposed a multi-racial matriarchal system, and introduced a gender-non-conforming character, inviting readers to envision new possibilities for the future. Ultimately, Johnelle presents a radical vision that questions racial and gender hierarchies and advocates for alternative social structures in postbellum Louisiana.

Abstract: This article considers the role of unpleasant sound, dissonance, and noise in Lautréamont’s Les Chants de Maldoror . The author presents his writing as dissonance, allegorizing his text as a strange-sounding lyre as he recounts the nefarious adventures of the misanthropic Maldoror. Despite the sonic nature of this text, evident even in its title, few have engaged with the sounds of Lautréamont’s work. I argue that Lautréamont uses dissonance as a metaphor for writing and that unpleasant sound in the form of frightening moans and a primal scream catalyzes the protagonist’s exploration of his fraught identity and facilitates his coming to writing within the narrative. Considered alongside emerging sound technologies from the time, Les Chants de Maldoror compels us to rethink modernist aurality in nineteenth-century France.

“Un son si étrange”: Writing Dissonance in Les Chants de Maldoror

“如此奇异之声”：《马尔多罗之歌》中的不和谐写作

Abstract: This essay examines the advertising campaign for Amaryllis du Japon, the signature fragrance of the perfumery Delettrez at the fin de siècle, as a case study of the homoerotic dynamics of visual culture for middle-class women of the period. I argue that the campaign’s central motif, the kimono-clad coquette, seduced female viewers and prospective consumers by evoking the intersecting discourses on Japanese femininity, floral scents, and olfactory arousal. The japonesque coquette promised exotic pleasures associated with the sapphic sensuality attributed to fashionable Parisiennes , both real and imagined. Using an analytical framework that ventures outside a heteronormative construction of female spectatorship demonstrates the advertisement campaign’s homoerotic appeal as well as a period concern for it.
