The AAPG Bulletin is a journal that has undergone some changes since its inception in 1917, now expanded to 8 ½ X 11 inches to accommodate more content and published in both digital and print formats. Nevertheless, it continues to uphold its primary mission of advancing geological sciences, particularly in areas related to petroleum, natural gas, other subsurface fluids, and mineral resources. As part of the membership fee, the AAPG Bulletin is delivered monthly in digital or print format to each AAPG member. It is one of the most respected peer-reviewed technical journals, with recent issues focusing on topics such as the Middle East, channel detection, China, permeability, aftershock fault prediction, the United States, and Africa.

The West Siberian Super Basin: The largest and most prolific hydrocarbon basin in the world

The recognition, correlation, and quantification of oil mixtures remain challenging in petroleum system studies. Most prolific basins have multiple source rocks that generate petroleum over wide ranges of maturity. Compound-specific isotopic analyses of alkanes (CSIA-A) and diamondoids (CSIA-D) are very effective for determining hydrocarbon mixtures. Quantitative diamondoid analysis (QDA) and CSIA-D provide a unique advantage for source correlation of thermally altered liquids or condensates and for condensate mixtures with black oil. Biomarker fingerprints, QDA, and various CSIA methods were applied to 37 oil and condensate samples to investigate the existence of deep sources and to identify and deconvolute cosourced oil mixtures. The data were used to unravel the components of mixed oil having widely diverse levels of maturity in the north–central West Siberian basin. Three oil families and their locations are recognized in the basin. One of the families appears to be composed of oil mixtures derived from two end-member families that originated from the Upper Jurassic Bazhenov and Lower to Middle Jurassic Tyumen source rocks. Our results suggest that a significant part of the gas in the giant gas fields of north–central western Siberia (e.g., Urengoi and Yamburg) is of thermogenic origin. The source of this thermal gas, which was formerly assigned to various source origins, was determined to be the Tyumen Formation. Some samples in the basin also show mixtures of noncracked Bazhenov oil with cracked Tyumen condensate. The area where prevalent oil cracking has occurred was determined from QDA.

Oil families and mixed oil of the North–Central West Siberian basin, Russia

The fluorescence characteristics of individual oil inclusions and molecular composition analysis of oil inclusions in 20 Eocene sandstone samples from the Dongying depression were used to assess the relationship between the fluorescence colors of the oil inclusions and their thermal maturity. The oil inclusions from the Shahejie Formation member III middle submember, member III lower submember, and member IV upper submember samples primarily have yellow fluorescence colors (500 nm < wavelength of the maximum intensity (λmax) < 590 nm), whereas the oil inclusions in the Shahejie Formation member IV lower submember reservoir sample only have blue fluorescence (440 nm < λmax < 500 nm). The molecular maturity parameters from steranes, hopanes, and aromatic hydrocarbons showed that the oil inclusions with yellow fluorescence colors have relatively low thermal maturities within a narrow range (0.75%–0.82% vitrinite reflectance equivalent [Requ]), which is significantly lower than that of the sample containing oil inclusions with blue fluorescence colors (1.26% Requ). The yellow fluorescent oil was interpreted to be related to the main oil generation and expulsion process, whereas the blue fluorescent oil was mainly controlled by the thermal cracking process of C14+ aromatic hydrocarbons in source rocks, reservoirs, and oil inclusions. This study demonstrates that the fluorescence colors of oil inclusions may be good indicators of thermal maturity in oil systems charged from oil-prone source rocks and, for the first time, makes it possible to quantitatively predict the thermal maturity of oil inclusions based on their fluorescence characteristics. However, biodegradation, water washing, phase separation, and trapping fractionation should be considered before using this correlation because these processes can also influence fluorescence colors.

We use a fully coupled poroelastoplastic geomechanical model to study how stresses and pore pressures evolve in sediments bounding a spherical salt body. Drained analyses (pore pressures remain hydrostatic) demonstrate that sediments yield in response to loading by the salt, which leads to a redistribution of stresses and to deformations larger than predicted by poroelastic or solid Coulomb-plastic models. Undrained analyses (overpressures develop while no dissipation occurs) illustrate that salt loading induces pore pressures that extend kilometers away from the salt body. We also model the flow and consequent dissipation that occur in the sediments because of this undrained salt loading. We show that with time, the pressure field dissipates and expands. The dissipation process takes millions of years, which suggests that pore-pressure perturbations caused by salt loading should still be present in mudstones near many salt bodies. Under drained conditions, stress perturbations generate low minimum principal stresses above and below the salt, resulting in convergence of pore pressure and minimum principal stress at these locations. Such conditions are challenging to drill through. In undrained systems, sharp drops in pore pressure may occur above and below the salt, whereas both the pore pressure and the minimum principal stress rise next to the salt. In contrast to previous models that do not couple changes in stress to changes in pore pressure, the coupled approach presented here has the potential to predict in-situ stresses and pore pressures more accurately in a wide variety of geologic settings.

Geomechanical modeling of stresses adjacent to salt bodies: Part 2—Poroelastoplasticity and coupled overpressures

We compare four approaches to geomechanical modeling of stresses adjacent to salt bodies. These approaches are distinguished by their use of elastic or elastoplastic constitutive laws for sediments surrounding the salt, as well as their treatment of fluid pressures in modeling. We simulate total stress in an elastic medium and then subtract an assumed pore pressure after calculations are complete; simulate effective stress in an elastic medium and use assumed pore pressure during calculations; simulate total stress in an elastoplastic medium, either ignoring pore pressure or approximating its effects by decreasing the internal friction angle; and simulate effective stress in an elastoplastic medium and use assumed pore pressure during calculations. To evaluate these approaches, we compare stresses generated by viscoelastic stress relaxation of a salt sphere. In all cases, relaxation causes the salt sphere to shorten vertically and expand laterally, producing extensional strains above and below the sphere and shortening against the sphere flanks. Deviatoric stresses are highest when sediments are assumed to be elastic, whereas plastic yielding in elastoplastic models places an upper limit on deviatoric stresses that the rocks can support, so stress perturbations are smaller. These comparisons provide insights into stresses around salt bodies and give geoscientists a basis for evaluating and comparing stress predictions.
