In Brief Because of the complexity of a midlife woman's life and the variation of the manifested symptoms of menopause, much remains inconclusive regarding the experience of distress during the menopause transition. The purpose of this narrative analysis study was to examine experiences of distress during the menopause transition using a postmodern feminist framework. Findings include experiences of shame related to symptom experience and prevailing social discourses on menopause and aging. Clinicians must be cautioned of the potential for silencing and withdrawal in women who may not be receiving adequate support, and must advocate for more choices for midlife women. A detailed analysis of Symptom Management Theory (SMT) along with its extent of use and implications for adults with cancer as demonstrated in 20 oncology research studies is reported. SMT provides useful guidance for adult oncology research and nursing practice. Theory dimension most researched in cancer was symptom experience. Although theory assertions were demonstrated in 80% of the studies, it was used to an adequate extent only in 35% of them. Comparisons between cancer-related clinical outcomes with and without use of SMT, certain theory modifications, and future SMT-based studies involving longitudinal designs in this population are warranted.

There has been a lack of consensus in the literature related to the conceptualization, definition, and measurement of hospital nurse fatigue. Using latent profile analysis, the Hospital Nurse Force Theory provided a conceptual format to identify 3 profiles of nurse fatigue from subjective reports of hospital patient care nurses in a survey cohort. All fatigue and adaptation variables demonstrated significant inverse relationships. Describing nurse fatigue in profiles that include measures of acute, chronic, physical, and mental fatigue dimensions provided a new and expanded view of nurse fatigue to monitor trends comprehensively and evaluate fatigue risk management strategies.

In this study, we explored the experiences of adult siblings of brothers who have been on probation or parole and the impacts on the participants’ health and health-related quality of life. We conducted semi-structured interviews and focused field observations of 8 adult siblings. The major themes were siblings being primary support providers , feelings of existing in a perpetual state of unknown , and perceived needs and resources . These themes reflected the types of support that participants provided; the associated strains and instability perpetuated by the criminal legal system; and the perceived resources needed to mitigate the negative impacts of participants’ experiences.

The Health and Health-Related Quality of Life Impacts of Having a Sibling on Probation or Parole in the United States

The famous novel entitled "invisible man" by Ralph Ellisoni1 caught my attention in recent months. The novel was brought up in a board meeting of a nursing professional organization when the members were discussing the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) issues. Although the novel was published in 1952, the context illustrated in the novel continues in 2020s in many oppressive situations with power games. This novel made me contemplate on many things, including the invisibility of nursing. When I was in PhD program in nursing in 1990s, people suspiciously looked at me and asked if nursing really had a PhD program. In early 2000s, when I shared with my neighbors that I had a PhD and post-doc experience, people looked at me with a strange glance and asked me why nursing would need a PhD degree. Even in 2020s, when I said to my ophthalmologist that I was a faculty member in a school of nursing, he asked me if a faculty position in nursing schools would require a master's degree. Although nursing science has advanced drastically in recent years, the status of nursing science in the community of health science may have not advanced as expected as well. Nurse scholars have published an increasing number of articles on their scientific findings and scholarly discourses. Yet, in reality, it is not clear how nursing scientific outputs are actually being recognized and cited by researchers from other health disciplines, and how nursing scientific outputs are used in health care, especially in nursing care. With an increasing emphasis on impact factors of peer reviewed journals, the number of submissions to nursing journals has drastically decreased.2 Despite the recent upward trend of impact factors, nursing journals tend to get much lower impact factors compared with other health disciplines because of multiple reasons.3 One of the reasons may be related to our own publishing practice and mentoring for our PhD students and junior faculty members. Indeed, when we are mentoring our PhD students and junior faculty members, we are emphasizing them to publish their works in high impact journals, which may imply non-nursing journals in a way. When we cite articles in our publications, we tend to cite more medical or other health science articles rather than nursing articles. When we submit a proposal to a funding agency, we tend to use a well-known theoretical framework from other disciplines rather than using a nursing theoretical framework. Then, how about researchers from other disciplines? Are they citing our scientific works? The case gets worse at an individual level when our scientific works are published mainly in nursing journals. In the academic, each faculty members' H-index is recently viewed as an indicator of the impact of their scholarly work, and it is often used in the promotion process.4 At some institutions, H-index is required to be listed in the faculty members' promotion packages. An interesting phenomenon that is being noted and discussed among nursing faculty members is: those who have mainly published their works in nursing journals tend to have a much lower H-index compared with those who have mainly published in non-nursing journals. Subsequently, junior faculty members want to submit their works to non-nursing journals rather than nursing journals. Is our nursing discipline on the right direction? When nursing began to have our own journals, nursing community widely celebrated it.5 When the National Institute of Nursing Research was firstly established in the National Institute of Health, nursing community was thrilled to celebrate our discipline's growth.5 All these milestones in nursing were not possible without extensive efforts of early generations of nursing scholars, researchers, and clinicians. This may be a significant point of nursing discipline to make nursing more visible in the scientific community while adapting to the new environments with all the metrics that did not exist in the past. Digital health technology is utilized in contemporary nursing practice and education. This review explored the scope of digital health applications and major trends in nursing research involving digital health in Korea using topic modeling. Our analysis of data using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation model identified four distinct research topics: nursing education using digital technologies (35.17%), hospital-based nursing practice using digital technologies (19.88%), digital technologies for health education (25.75%), and development of digital technologies to support self-management of chronic conditions (19.20%). Our findings reveal trends, current issues, and gaps in digital health nursing research.

Exploring Research Trends on Digital Health in Nursing Science in Korea

Heroism is an immutable and quintessential part of what gives rise to the phenomenon that is nurse. This altruistic discourse comes with profound consequences for the nursing profession, particularly in relation to nursing’s professional identity. This critical review explores nursing’s professional identity against the backdrop of gendered and heroic discourses. Two concept analyses of nursing’s professional identity are critically reviewed and juxtaposed with literature on the topic amidst COVID-19. Using poststructural feminism and critical discourse analysis, the review provides valuable insights into the evolutionary significance of the concept and raises key questions around knowledge-power structures and discursive constructions of nurse.
