Traumatic arterio-venous fistula of the large cervical blood vessels in a horse

Information regarding the behavior of different diseases in geriatric equines is scarce, including the ones related to the locomotor system, which is essential to the animal's performance.The objective of this study was to evaluate the different types of alterations in the metacarpophalangeal joint (fetlock) in the thoracic limbs of geriatric equines and the frequency of which they occur.Furthermore, it was aimed to evaluate the scores of such lesions and their correlation to clinical manifestations.In this study, 39 mixed-breed equines were evaluated, all at a minimum age of 15 years (18,9 ± 2,86 years old).Of those, 21 were females (53,8 %) and 18 were geldings (46,2 %).A clinical examination specific to the locomotor system was performed, followed by ultrasonographic and radiographic imaging of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thoracic limb.For every image obtained, a scoring system was applied in accordance to the severity of the found lesion, such as in the radiographic image (0-4) and in the ultrasonographic image of the soft tissue (0-6) and bone (0-4).Thirteen equines (35 %) presented lameness, out of which three (10 %) were sourced in the metacarpophalangeal joint and 10 (25 %) in other painful sites.All animals (39/39) showed alterations in the metacarpophalangeal joint through ultrasound evaluation and 35 (90 %) and 38 (98 %) in radiographic evaluation.Considering the injury scoring system for soft tissue, 46 of 78 forelimbs (46/78; 59 %) were scored 0; 5/78 (6 %) were scored 1; 4/78 (5 %) were scored 2; scores 3 and 4 were not observed within the group; 21/78 (26 %) were scored 5 and 3/78 (4 %) were scored 6.For the scoring system for ultrasonographic alteration in bones, 22/78 (27,5 %) were scored 0; 19/78 (23,8 %) were scored 1; 32/78 (40 %) were scored 2; 6/78 (7,5 %) were scored 3 and 1/78 (1,3 %) were scored 4. As for the radiographic evaluation, considering both limbs 2/78 (2,5 %) were scored 0; 19/78 (23,8 %) were scored 1; 13/78 (16,2 %) were scored 2, 43/78 (53,8 %) were scored 3 and 3/78 (3,7 %) were scored 4. The main alterations observed in the study were related to degenerative chronic joint diseases.There was no relationship between the presence of lameness and the scores based on the image´s analysis.The absence of clinical manifestations in geriatric horses that were not being submitted to intense exercises does not exclude the presence of alterations in ultrasonographic and radiographic images of the metacarpophalangeal joint.

Zusammenfassung: Bei Fohlen ist bisher wenig bekannt über die Eisenparameter im Blut.Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit war es, die Veränderungen des Eisenstoffwechsels bei akuter systemischer Entzündung bei ein bis sechs Monate alten Fohlen zu untersuchen.Hierfür wurden in einer prospektiven Studie EDTA-Vollblut-und Serumproben von 66 gesunden Fohlen und 84 Fohlen mit einer akuten systemischen Entzündung in Form einer Bronchopneumonie genommen.Bestimmt wurde die Blutleukozytenzahl aus EDTA-Vollblut und aus Serum, der Serum Amyloid A (SAA) Gehalt sowie die Eisenparameter Serum-Eisen, Serum-Ferritin und ungesättigte Eisenbindungskapazität (UIBC).Des Weiteren wurden die Parameter Totale Eisenbindungskapazität (TIBC) und Eisensättigung berechnet.Die Serum-Eisenwerte der gesunden Fohlen lagen innerhalb des laborinternen Referenzbereichs für adulte Pferde.Die kranken Fohlen wiesen eine sonographisch diagnostizierte Bronchopneumonie mit erhöhter Körperinnentemperatur (>39,0 °C) sowie einen SAA-Wert von > 7,0 µg/ml auf.Sie zeigten signifikant niedrigere Serum-Eisenwerte, signifikant höhere Ferritin-und UIBC-Werte sowie eine signifikant geringere Eisensättigung.Bei gesunden Fohlen im Alter von ein bis sechs Monaten entsprechen die Bluteisenwerte denen

Zusammenfassung: Ulzerative Magenerkrankungen beim Pferd -auch zusammengefasst als "Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrom" (EGUS)haben eine fortwährende Bedeutung bei Sport-und Freizeitpferden und sind ein häufiger Vorstellungsgrund in der Pferdepraxis.Man unterscheidet Läsionen der kutanen Schleimhaut ("Equine Squamous Gastric Disease" -ESGD), welche klassischerweise mit Omeprazol behandelt werden und Veränderungen der glandulären Schleimhaut ("Equine Glandular Gastric Disease" -EGGD) für die es unterschiedliche Ansätze der medikamentösen Therapie gibt.Speziell Pferde mit EGGD sprechen schlecht auf die bisher genutzten Therapien an.Ziel dieser Studie war es, zwei Medikationen anhand retrospektiver Untersuchung des Patientengutes einer privaten Tierklinik auf Ihre Wirksamkeit zu testen und zu vergleichen.Eingeschlossen wurden 31 Patienten mit EGGD alleine oder EGGD und ESGD, welche nach vier Wochen wieder zur Kontrollgastroskopie vorgestellt wurden.21 Pferde erhielten zur Behandlung 4 mg/kg Omeprazol in Pastenform (Gastrogard ® ) in Kombination mit 2 × tgl.12 mg/kg KGW Sucralfat (Sucrabest ® ).Die andere Gruppe mit 10 Pferden wurde mit einer Monotherapie von 3,5-4 mg/kg Omeprazol in Granulatform (Equizol ® ) therapiert.Dies entspricht einer doppelten Equizol ® -Dosis, da das Präparat eine Zulassung für die Behandlung von EGUS mit einer Dosis von 2 mg/kg hat.Eine Bewertung erfolgte für ESGD-und EGGD-Befunde getrennt nach einem Scoring-System mit einer Einteilung von Grad 0 bis Grad 4 übernommen aus der Arbeit von Vondran (2016).Alle Besitzer erhielten zudem Empfehlungen zur Haltungsund Fütterungsoptimierung.In der Gastrogard ® /Sucrabest ® -Gruppe (GGS) liegt die Heilungsrate nach vier Wochen für ESGD bei 44 % und für EGGD bei 19 %.Die Werte in der Equizol ® -Gruppe (EQ) lagen für ESGD bei 71 % und für EGGD bei 20 %.Insgesamt verbesserten sich die Magenbefunde unter GGS-Therapie bei ESGD bei 83 % der Patienten im Schnitt um 1,3 Grade, 57 % der EGGD-Befunde verbesserten sich durchschnittlich um 1 Grad.Unter Equizol ® -Therapie gab es eine Verbesserung des Scorings bei ESGD im Schnitt um 1,8 Grade von 86 % der Patienten.Eine EGGD verbesserte sich durchschnittlich um 1,4 Grade bei 50 % der Pferde.Eine hochdosierte Equizol ® -Therapie zeigte keinen signifikant besseren Therapieerfolg im Vergleich

Low therapeutic success rates with both high-dose therapy with omeprazole granules (Equizol©) and combination therapy with omeprazole paste (Gastrogard®) and sucralfate (Sucrabest®) in horses with Equine Glandular Gastric Disease (EGGD)

Equine Recurrent Uveitis (ERU) is an episodic inflammatory disease of the eye and the most common cause of blindness in horses.The objective of this study was to evaluate a long-term success rate after an injection of 4 mg gentamicin performed between 2016 and 2020 on 82 eyes with a history of ERU.Owners of the horses were contacted and follow-up information was obtained for 69 horses (82 treated eyes).An ophthalmological reexamination including tonometry, induction of mydriasis, slit lamp biomicroscopy and direct ophthalmology was performed in 54 horses (65 treated eyes).An examination of visual acuity was conducted by the dazzle reflex and the menace response.Further information such as gender, age and breed of the horses, as well as leptospiral status were included.Pre-existing damages and further development of these from injected eyes are described using a score.In this study, 75.6 % of eyes showed no further recurrences of ERU after injection.Thirty-two eyes (39 %) were blind at the time of reexamination which represents a deterioration of 12.2 % compared status to before injection.The main reasons for blindness are mature or hypermature cataract formation and retinal detachment as a result of the previous damage.The breed and coat colour, the kind of anaesthesia (general anaesthesia or sedation) and the number of ERU episodes pre-injection showed no significant correlation with the prevalence of recurrences.The risk of suffering recurrences of ERU increased significantly with an increasing pre-injection score.Furthermore, there is a significant influence of increasing age on the chance of recurrences of ERU after injection, and five leptospiral negative eyes were shown significantly more recurrences than ten leptospiral positive eyes.The present study shows, even if a clearing of the optical axis is not to be expected, that the intravitreal injection of gentamicin against ERU seems to be a useful addition to the therapy methods existing already.

Long-term ophthalmologic examinations of eyes with Equine Recurrent Uveitis after an intravitreal injection of gentamicin

Zusammenfassung: Tendopathien der oberflächlichen Beugesehne (OBS) gehören zu den häufigsten Verletzungen der Sportpferde.Das Ziel dieser Studie war es, die Blutgefäßversorgung der oberflächlichen Beugesehne (OBS) bei gesunden Pferden zu quantifizieren und Unterschiede zwischen Vorder-und Hintergliedmaßen sowie verschiedener Abschnitte der Sehne zu untersuchen.Es wurde die OBS von 6 Pferden entnommen und histologische Schnitte von proximalen, mittleren und distalen Abschnitten angefertigt.Mittels Immunhistochemie für alpha smooth muscle actin wurden die Gefäße markiert und anschließend ausgezählt.Die Ergebnisse zeigten, dass die Gefäßdichte im mittleren Drittel der OBS signifikant geringer war als im proximalen (p = 0,015) und distalen (p = 0,015) Bereich.Es wurden jedoch keine signifikanten Unterschiede in der Gefäßdichte zwischen Vorder-und Hintergliedmaßen festgestellt (p = 0,3508).Die verwendeten Methoden der Histologie und Immunhistochemie erwiesen sich als geeignet, um die Blutgefäßversorgung zu quantifizieren.Die Korrelation zwischen der geringen Gefäßdichte im mittleren Abschnitt der OBS und der Anfälligkeit für Verletzungen in diesem Sehnenbereich zeigt die Bedeutung der Blutversorgung in der Pathogenese der Tendopathie.Weitere

This case report presents the first reported identifications of 20-hydroxyecdysone in post-event blood samples from an Endurance horse and a Harness horse racing in New South Wales, Australia.20-Hydroxyecdysone is a plant secondary metabolite structurally related to testosterone and used by plants to discourage insect predation.20-Hydroxyecdysone is found in many plants including spinach and is not infrequently identified at low concentrations in mammalian systems including in humans.Given its steroid-related structure, 20-hydroxyecdysone has been reported to enhance athletic performance in humans, although at this time 20-hydroxyecdysone is simply being monitored by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) [31] .The Harness horse identification led the Harness Racing New South Wales (HRNSW) authorities to evaluate the home pastures of the horse in question, where they recovered at least three plants containing significant concentrations of 20-hydroxyecdysone.The HRNSW stewards were satisfied that the 20-hydroxyecdysone identification was due to "environmental contamination emanated from plants" in the trainer's establishment and did not impose a penalty on the trainer.These findings show that the pasture plant steroid 20-hydroxyecdysone is found in pasture plants from which it is bioavailable to equines and can present as low part per billion concentrations in equine blood samples, as has also been noted in humans.Based on these Australian identifications of 20-hydroxyecdysone in pasture plants and also in equine blood samples and the HRNSW decision not to penalize the trainer involved and the likelihood of no pharmacological response to pasture plant exposure to this substance we now present 2 parts per billion in equine blood/plasma as an appropriate regulatory cut-off or Screening Limit of Detection (SLOD) for 20-hydroxecdysone in equine blood/plasma.
