Microplastics cause pollution problems because they are difficult to degrade and tend to be easily transported and accumulate in the environment. Biodegradation is a promising solution by exploiting the ability of fungi or bacteria to accelerate the degradation process of microplastics, but this is a topic with several knowledge gaps. To evaluate the ability of microorganisms to degrade high-density polyethylene microplastics, four bacterial strains isolated from a sanitary landfill were selected, in a minimal salt medium with microplastics as the sole carbon source. The selected strains were identified as Tsukamurella sp. strain JP3, Tsukamurella sp. strain JP5+, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (JP5–) and Streptomyces sp. strain JP8. The bioassays were performed with single strains and mixed cultures. Biodegradation was determined by calculating the percentage weight loss of the microplastics and observing changes in their surface structure using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Biodegradation rates between 6.81 and 18.14% were obtained, with JP5+JP8 being the treatment with the highest percentage, but with no significant differences between treatments. However, SEM showed microbial damage and growth on the surface of microplastics. Therefore, the bacterial strains used would have potential for biodegradation of high-density polyethylene, but it is advisable to continue investigations to determine the conditions and appropriate times to improve biodegradation with these strains.

High density polyethylene microplastics biodegradation by bacteria isolated from a landfill in Cali, Colombia

高密度聚乙烯微塑料通过从哥伦比亚卡利市垃圾填埋场分离的细菌进行生物降解

A nivel mundial los residuos del sector de la construcción y demolición representan del 45 al 65 % de lo depositado en sitios de disposición final, en México 25 % corresponden a concreto. Buscar alternativas para reutilizar estos materiales es importante para reducir el impacto ambiental que causan, particularmente cuando no se dispone de ellos de forma adecuada. Una de las opciones es la elaboración de tecnosuelos, que requieren de una fracción mineral y una fuente de materia orgánica. Debido a su origen sintético, los tecnosuelos suelen contar con una microbiota poco diversa. En el presente trabajo se diseñaron tecnosuelos a partir de concreto reciclado (de dos texturas) y residuos orgánicos de dos orígenes (lodo residual de tratamiento de agua y composta). Se caracterizaron los materiales y se evaluó el crecimiento de Zea mays y Albizia occidentalis. Además, se cuantificó el efecto de la inoculación con bacterias promotoras del crecimiento vegetal (BPCV). Diferentes estructuras cristalinas fueron encontradas en el concreto, características de este material, incluyendo portlandita. Los resultados indican que la fuente de materia orgánica es importante para el desempeño de las plantas, en particular para Zea mays, pues el mejor desempeño se obtuvo en mezclas con lodo residual como fuente de materia orgánica con concreto de textura gruesa. Las propiedades fisicas y químicas de los tecnosuelos y los lixiviados variaron en función de la composición de las mezclas y de la especie vegetal creciendo en ellas. El uso de BPCV fue benéfico para el desarrollo de las plantas.

Tecnosuelos a base de concreto reciclado: efectos de la fuente de materia orgánica, biocarbón e inoculación con bacterias promotoras de crecimiento vegetal

基于再生混凝土的生态土壤：有机质来源、生物炭及植物促生菌接种的影响

Residual aquaculture effluents are discarded into the environment, causing adverse effects on water bodies through eutrophication. Therefore, looking for a treatment that extracts the contaminants and adds benefits by cultivating microalgae in the effluents is necessary. In this research, Chlorella vulgaris and Nannochloropsis oculata were cultivated in aquaculture waste effluent using two lighting conditions (40.5 and 72.9 μmol m–2 s–1). The results show that the time the exponential and stationary phases are reached was not influenced by light, but cell growth, production, and biomass productivity were. The best results were for the condition of 72.9 μmol m–2 s–1 in stationary phase (4.62×107 ± 2.12×105 and 4.45×107 ± 2.33×106 cell mL–1; 0.684±0.124 and 0.718±0.122 g L–1; 0.043 ± 0.008 and 0.048 ±0.008 g L–1 d–1) with C. vulgaris and N. oculata, respectively. Cultures at 72.9 μmol m–2 s–1 and the stationary phase were better for removing nitrates, phosphates, and COD (80-97%, 25-50%, and 43-89%) in microalgae and growth phases. While for ammonium and nitrites, the highest removal efficiency was obtained with 40.5 μmol m–2 s–1 in the stationary phase. Therefore, light intensity is an essential factor to consider when there are high concentrations of contaminants On the other hand, the light intensity of 72.9 μmol m–2 s–1 was also the most suitable for the highest biomass production and productivity in the stationary phase.

Effect of light intensity on removal of contaminants in tilapia residual effluents with mocroalgae

光强对微藻去除罗非鱼残余废水中污染物的影响

Los residuos de la minería se disponen en presas de jales que contaminan suelos. Se ha reportado un suelo agrícola del municipio de Zimapán, Hidalgo, México, impactado por jales, con una concentración de plomo de 647.5 mg Pb/kg de suelo seco, por arriba del límite máximo permisible (400 mg Pb/kg) establecido en la NOM-147-SEMARNAT/SS41-2004. Por ello, se han evaluado en laboratorio dos tecnologías para su remediación: lavado de suelo con ácido etildiaminotetraacético (EDTA) y fitoextracción asistida. En este trabajo se comparó la evaluación del impacto del ciclo de vida de las dos tecnologías, una de ellas con dos escenarios de disposición de residuos, para lo cual la unidad funcional fue remediar 1 kg de suelo contami-nado por jales mineros con 647.5 mg Pb/kg, para cumplir el límite máximo permisible. Se realizó para ambas tecnologías el inventario de ciclo de vida con datos experimentales y con la base de datos Ecoinvent 3.8; y se analizaron 18 categorías de impactos con el método ReCiPe 2016 mediante el software SimaPro v9.5. La contribución del lavado de suelos con EDTA es mayor que la de la fitoextracción asistida en 17 categorías; la mayor contribución de la fitoextracción asistida fue el consumo de agua; y, para ambas tecnologías, la mayor contribución fue la toxicidad humana carcinógena, debido a la emisión de sustancias tóxicas que ocurren durante el proceso de fabricación del EDTA. La fitoextracción asistida resultó ser más viable que el lavado con EDTA por generar menores impactos ambientales.

Análisis de ciclo de vida de la remediación de suelo contaminado con plomo por lavado y fitoextracción

In this study, the chicken eggshell (ES) particle size was evaluated in relation to the neutralization rate (γ) of acid mine drainage (AMD) under stirring conditions. Four treatments were carried out using three different particle sizes (&lt;63, 250−500, and 1,410−2,000 μm). In the treatments T1−T3, the pH increase (ΔpH) was monitored every 5 min and ES was added until a pH ~6.0 was reached and the γ was calculated every 5 min. In T4, ΔpH and γ were measured every 8 hours for 48 hours, and ES particle size &lt;63 μm was used. At the end of each treatment, the redox potential (Eh), SO42– removal efficiency (ηSO42–), and heavy metal (HM) removal efficiency (ηHM) were determined. The γ values to achieve a pH ~6.0 were 1.6×10−1, 1.1×10−1 y 6.0×10−2 min–1 for particle size of &lt;63, 250−500, and 1410-2000 μm, respectively. However, regardless of particle size, the highest γ effect was observed within the first 5−10 min. Overall, the Eh was reduced to ca. 210 mV in all treatments. The maximum ηSO42– was ca. 70% in T1 and T4. However, the larger the particle size, the longer and higher ES concentration was needed to achieve a pH ~6.0 and the ηSO42– was lower. The maximum ηHM recorded in all treatments were 100% for Al, Fe, and Mo. The use of ES with particle size &lt;63 μm reduced the concentration needed to reach the target pH, increased the γ, favored the ηSO42–, and removed the Fe3+ decreasing the Eh.

Acid mine drainage neutralization rate using biogenic calcite

生物成因方解石对酸性矿井排水的中和速率

El presente artículo propone establecer criterios mínimos para el desarrollo de un ambiente construido saludable a partir de categorías directas indispensables en la salud humana, considerando la definición de salud de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, que implica el bienestar físico, mental y social de los habitantes. La metodología utiliza la revisión sistemática de diversos autores e instituciones relacionadas con el edificio saludable y el metaanálisis para investigar la búsqueda de las categorías en fuentes de información y evaluar su dispersión, junto con el análisis de frecuencia de los factores directos que implican un riesgo a la salud dentro del ambiente construido. El resultado establece de manera integral siete categorías directas: calidad del aire interior, rango higrotérmico, rango acústico, humedad, rango lumínico, campos electromagnéticos, seguridad y accesibilidad. El objetivo es que dichas categorías puedan ser evaluadas y difundidas de manera accesible en países de economías de bajo y medio nivel de consumo, como los países de Latinoamérica y el Caribe, con el fin de fortalecer su marco normativo que regule los procesos de la construcción para mejorar la salud, promoviendo el desarrollo de habilidades del bienestar en los habitantes.
