The relationship between nursing staffing levels and healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) has been explored previously with conflicting results. This study uses daily shift records from 2 intensive care units (ICUs) to evaluate whether nuanced changes in nursing team composition impacts subsequent risk for device associated HAIs. Staffing deficiencies may be associated with periods of risk prior to central line-associated bloodstream infection in the ICU.

Changes in nursing team composition and risk of device-associated infection in intensive care units.

We systematically reviewed existing research pertinent to Ebola virus disease and social media, especially to identify the research questions and the methods used to collect and analyze social media.We searched 6 databases for research articles pertinent to Ebola virus disease and social media. We extracted the data using a standardized form. We evaluated the quality of the included articles.Twelve articles were included in the main analysis: 7 from Twitter with 1 also including Weibo, 1 from Facebook, 3 from YouTube, and 1 from Instagram and Flickr. All the studies were cross-sectional. Eleven of the 12 articles studied ≥ 1of these 3 elements of social media and their relationships: themes or topics of social media contents, meta-data of social media posts (such as frequency of original posts and reposts, and impressions) and characteristics of the social media accounts that made these posts (such as whether they are individuals or institutions). One article studied how news videos influenced Twitter traffic. Twitter content analysis methods included text mining (n = 3) and manual coding (n = 1). Two studies involved mathematical modeling. All 3 YouTube studies and the Instagram/Flickr study used manual coding of videos and images, respectively.Published Ebola virus disease-related social media research focused on Twitter and YouTube. The utility of social media research to public health practitioners is warranted.

Background Surgical antibiotic prophylaxis (SAP) is a critical area to optimize to reduce the escalation of antimicrobial resistance. This article explores the ways by which interpersonal relationships influence SAP decision making. Methods Twenty surgeons and anesthetists participated in in-depth semistructured interviews on SAP prescribing. Results were analyzed using the framework approach. Results Analysis revealed 3 ways by which interpersonal relationships influence SAP: relationship dynamics between the surgeon and the anesthetist determine appropriateness of SAP, particularly operative risk ownership; perceived hierarchies within, and between, surgical and anesthetist specialties influence antibiotic prescribing decisions; and surgical distance from the antimicrobial stewardship team, which influences use of antimicrobial stewardship principles. Conclusions Interventions to optimize SAP are more likely to be effective in enacting sustained change if they consider the interpersonal and social contexts, including issues of familiarity and cohesiveness, hierarchical patterns, and sense of place within a team. Significant relational dynamics in SAP decision making are centered around risk; that is, personal/reputational risk to different professional groups and ownership of risk for individual patient outcomes. Risk must therefore be considered for sustainable SAP optimization interventions. Since 1988, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published 2 articles in which nosocomial infection and criteria for specific types of nosocomial infection for surveillance purposes for use in acute care settings have been defined.1,2 This document replaces those articles, which are now considered obsolete, and uses the generic term “health care–associated infection” or “HAI” instead of “nosocomial.” This document reflects the elimination of criterion 1 of clinical sepsis (effective in National Healthcare Safety Network [NHSN] facilities since January 2005) and criteria for laboratory–confirmed bloodstream infection (LCBI).

Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) is a pathogen of concern. Several risk factors are known, but patients without these risk factors continue to develop the disease. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is known to disrupt the gut similar to antibiotics, which prompted this evaluation of the association between AUD and C. diff infection METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted within five hospitals in a health system in Colorado. Adults 18 years of age or older who were seen in the Emergency Department or directly admitted to the hospital in 2022 and 2023 were included. A logistic regression was used to investigate the association between AUD and C. diff.

Contaminated portable equipment may contribute to transmission of healthcare-associated pathogens. We demonstrated that a wall-mounted far ultraviolet-C (UV-C) light technology that delivers far UV-C only when people are not present was effective in reducing contamination on in-use patient transport chairs and physical therapy equipment in equipment rooms. The technology could potentially be used as an adjunctive measure for decontamination of portable equipment in clinical areas.

Using intravascular catheter dressing audit data, we evaluated factors associated with non-compliant dressing. Male sex and gauze dressing had a higher risk of non-compliant dressing; presence of one or more lumens infusing, central venous catheter, PICC line, implantable port and contact precautions were associated with a lower risk of non-compliant dressing.
