Basic and Applied Social Psychology (BASP) emphasizes the publication of outstanding research articles, but also considers literature reviews, criticism, and methodological or theoretical statements spanning the entire range of social psychological issues. Basic and Applied Social Psychology

Combining a life course perspective with recent theorizing on motivationally related agendas for social behavior, this study investigated the purposes, expectations, and outcomes of adult hospice volunteers of varying ages. Specifically, support was found for the hypothesis that younger volunteers tend to be motivated by and to achieve outcomes related to interpersonal relationships, whereas older volunteers tend to be motivated to a greater extent by service or community obligation concerns. Furthermore, in hierarchical regression analyses predicting overall satisfaction, benefits relative to costs, commitment, and changes in self-esteem over 6 months of volunteer service, relationship-related variables demonstrated greater and significant predictive power for younger relative to older volunteers. Service-oriented variables, hypothesized to be more influential in predicting the outcomes of older volunteers, tended to be inconsistently related to these same outcomes. Discussion focuses on the theoretical significance of the findings for contemporary approaches to motivation and research on volunteerism and aging, as well as the practical implications of the results for volunteer recruitment, satisfaction, and retention.

Volunteerism and the Life Course: Investigating Age-Related Agendas for Action

Higher perceived dominance leads to greater perceived risk-taking willingness. This, both for people differing in facial dominance (Study 1) and people whose dominance was digitally manipulated (Study 2). Yet, the effect of facial dominance varied to some degree across domains. Gender differences also emerged and these fitted stereotypes. Women were judged as less likely to take financial or recreational risks but more likely (Study 1) or as likely as men (Study 2) to take social risks. The assumption that perceived optimism and/or perceived competence mediate the effect of facial dominance on perceived risk-preferences was not supported. Overall, this research exemplifies the importance of considering the way cues such as dominance may have a differential effect in specific contexts. Our findings also challange the idea that assessment of risk-taking tendencies based on facial dominance serves the goal of determining male quality.

The Influence of Facial Dominance on Perceptions of Risk-Taking Preferences

Abstract A concept of symbolic self-completion states that people define themselves as musicians, athletes, etc. by use of indicators of attainment in those activity realms, such as possessing a prestige job, having extensive education, or whatever is recognized by others as indicating progress toward completing the self-definition. The self-completion idea postulates that when important symbols—indicators of self-definition—are lacking, the person will strive after further, alternative symbols of the self-definition. In the present research two modes of symbolizing completeness were studied: (1) attempting to influence others directly within the self-definitional area; or (2) simple self-descriptions of one's own performance, such that others would be exposed to those self-descriptions. Two correlational studies showed that the less education (Study 1) or on-the-job experience (Study 2) subjects had, the more they desired to influence others. Experimental subjects (Study 3) who were interrupted while writing a positive, self-descriptive statement manifested stronger influence attempts than did subjects who were allowed to finish. Finally, Study 4 examined self-descriptions as a self-symbolizing effort. Incompleteness was varied by means of a salience-of-past-teacher manipulation. When pressure was placed on subjects to characterize themselves negatively within their respective areas, those for whom a positive teacher was salient were the most willing to be negative. The interpretation of these findings assumes that influencing others, as well as positive self-descriptions, can further the individual's sense of having a complete self-definition.

Symbolic Self-Completion, Attempted Influence, and Self-Deprecation

Previous studies have demonstrated that social value orientations and feedback affected cooperative behavior in environmental contexts, but they often set a clear bearing threshold of the environment. To better reflect reality, we simulated a natural environment in a fishbowl and created a water resource dilemma with no damage thresholds. The results showed that in resource dilemma with no damage thresholds, prosocials took the same amount of water as proselfs, both in situations involving life value (Study 1) and no life value (Study 2), and did not experience greater guilt for environmental damage (Studies 1 and 2). This contrasts with findings from studies with damage thresholds, where prosocial individuals typically took less. However, after environmental damage occurred, prosocials donated more water than proselfs to repair the environment. Life values decreased resource-taking and increased donations (Study 2). Feedback indicating that others had donated more (Study 1) or that the participant was the main cause of environmental damage (Study 2) increased donations. Our research provides practical implications for designing effective interventions and policies to foster sustainable behaviors, emphasizing the importance of social value orientation, feedback, and moral emotions in motivating cooperative actions.

A Bibliometric Review of Natural Language Processing Applications in Psychology from 1991 to 2023

Research suggests that communal violence constitutes an integral component of human social cognition under conditions in which in-group membership is highly desirable and uncertain for most in-group members. However, little remains known about the effects of social conformity dynamics on moral decision-making under these conditions. In this study, we adapt the Asch paradigm to study these effects in a cohort of cadets at the Czech University of Defence. The data suggests that social conformity dynamics strongly affect moral decision-making (rpb = .564, n = 87) and may be stronger in males than females. These findings highlight the need for specialized training programs to provide military personnel with the mental tools to recognize, deter and resist communal acts of unjustifiable violence.

On Communal Transgressive Behaviour; A Moral Dilemma Variation on the Classic Asch Paradigm

Across a pilot study and 2 experiments (N = 503), we examined the conditions under which loyal members would conform to their leader's sunk cost bias—a tendency to persist in a failing course of action despite its apparent negative outcomes. Drawing on the social identity approach to leadership and trait-situation principles, we hypothesized that the effect of members' trait group loyalty on their conformity would be stronger when their leader was perceived as a prototypical member. As hypothesized, members high, not low, in trait group loyalty evaluated more favorably the undesirable performance of their leader and conformed more to the leader's sunk cost bias. But these results emerged only when the leader was perceived as a prototypical member.

Blind Conformity: The Interplay of Trait Group Loyalty and Leader Group Prototypicality in a Simulated Sunk Cost Situation

Awe, a positive moral emotion linked to self-transcendence, has an inconsistent relationship with prosocial behavior (PsB). This study employs three-level meta-analytic techniques to investigate this relationship, reviewing thirty papers with 91 effect sizes and 27,407 individuals. Results show a strong positive correlation between awe and PsB (r = 0.40, SE = 0.04), with both dispositional and state awe positively associated with prosocial actions. Positive and negative awe experiences also correlated positively with PsB. Sharing and volunteering had the strongest correlation with awe, while helping behaviors had the weakest. The correlation between awe and PsB increased with a higher percentage of female participants but did not rise with higher individualism scores. This three-level meta-analysis provides a comprehensive understanding of the awe-PsB relationship, yielding reliable conclusions.
